Or does it refer to doing something dangerous? Is this a common phrase? Does it contain a word which could have two diffferent meanings? |

I'm just talking about a generic group of Americans Was the lyric interpreted as particularly miserable? Like wanting to be dead? Neither, this is actually a very upbeat, happy song ! I'm a real 80's music buff so this puzzle interests me greatly Can i just confirm we are looking for a All Male band with 7 memebers formed in the 70's who were one hit wonders in the 80's and who are still together today. The band is british has a one word title and the song has two words in it. Is that all correct? Was the hit in 1980? 81? 82? 83? 84? 85? 86? 87? 88? 89? Does the band's name consist of a group of letters that don't spell a word such as OMD , ELO etc? |

How about Madness? (They tick all the boxes: 7 piece, one word, all male, big in 82, still touring, and they fit the title. Not sure about the one-hit wonder thing, though.) |

Another unlikely guess: what about 'Our house, in the middle of our street'? Not sure about US idiom here, but to build a house literally in the middle of a street would be a pretty daft thing to do. |

That it would, in the US the idiom for the location of a building is 'on the street' whereas 'in the street' means atop the road itself |

SPOILER : When I was quite young, I lived in the USA, where many of my friends who heard the song line 'our house ... in the middle of our street' by Madness thought (semi-jokingly), "Oh my ... building a house in the middle of the street (American idiom) ... that's suicidal !!!" not realising the idiom difference between American English and the British English of the song. |

Heheh ... come to think of it, here in the UK we wouldn't normally say "in the middle of the street" either, unless it was actually, well ... in the middle of the street. Yet in 20+ years that lyric has never struck me as particularly odd. I love transatlantic differences. A rich seam for puzzles. (I nearly guessed "Baggy Trousers" at first. "Loose fitting pants" just wouldn't be the same.) |

Incidentally, I grew up very near this: a house standing literally in the middle of a motorway. The owner refused to move out, so they just built around him. It has become something of a tourist attraction. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tpreece01/27102529/ |
