is "it" something physical? (ie like riding a bike) is "it" something mental? (ie like knowing a poem by heart) does "it" relate to travel? does it relate to something educational (science/ math/ literature/ oratory)? artistic (music/ arts/ drama/ speech)? sports? are you too old to do it? do you not have enough money to do it? do you not have enough time to do it? or can you just physically not do it? are you upset that you can't do it? did you know you could do it before because you tried it, and just didn't want to spend the time doing it? or did you just know you could do it? now, did you try to do it and find out you couldn't anymore? |

is "it" something physical? Yes, but not very .. (ie like riding a bike)No is "it" something mental? No (ie like knowing a poem by heart) No does "it" relate to travel? No does it relate to something educational (science/ math/ literature/ oratory)? artistic (music/ arts/ drama/ speech)? sports? None of these are you too old to do it?No. As you may have guessed, I am too old for many things, but this is not the reason here... do you not have enough money to do it?No. As you may have guessed, I am also too poor for many things, but this is not the reason... do you not have enough time to do it? No. I am too busy for many things, but this also in not the reason... or can you just physically not do it? If you mean that there is something about my own physical body which prevents me from doing it, then "no" are you upset that you can't do it? No. Just a little surprised. did you know you could do it before because you tried it,I knew I could do it before I tried and just didn't want to spend the time doing it? That's exactly the reason or did you just know you could do it? This one now, did you try to do it ... no and find out you couldn't anymore? yes |

Would it help to establish how long it would take? minutes? hours? days? weeks? years? consider numbers posted with each of these (roughly speaking) Is the hobby a common one? a popular one? is it an essential part of this hobby? Is it the mental part of doing it that you cannot do? Is it now banned by law? by some other authority? or is it impossible because the object or place no longer exists? is accessible? |

Would it help to establish how long it would take? minutes? hours? days? weeks? years? consider numbers posted with each of these (roughly speaking) a small number of minutes ... Is the hobby a common one? Yes-ish a popular one? Among a certain type of person (insert winking smiley), then definitely! it an essential part of this hobby? No ... an optional extra Is it the mental part of doing it that you cannot do? no Is it now banned by law? no by some other authority? no or is it impossible because the object or place no longer exists? Well, there is something that doesn't exist ... is accessible? ... and is therefore inaccesible |

did you use "it" because of a fad? I wouldn't describe it as a "fad" if so, from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s? Good question ... I could have done it from October 2004 up till some time last year, but not now |

does "it" relate to computers? a computer game? type of computer? something related to communications? but...you did say that it was an object that you use with your body as a hobby...hmmm...is it something you wear? as clothing? on your body itself? do you do something "to" the object? kick it? (ie like a hackysack) throw it? shake it? twirl it? spin it? (like a hula hoop--though I am sure this is not it!) |

does "it" relate to computers? Indeed it does! a computer game? No type of computer? no something related to communications? yes but...you did say that it was an object that you use with your body as a hobby...hmmm...is it something you wear? as clothing? on your body itself? no do you do something "to" the object? yes kick it? (ie like a hackysack) throw it? shake it? twirl it? spin it? (like a hula hoop--though I am sure this is not it!) none of these ...You have established the link with computers, so I can reveal that the "object" is a computer, and the "use of the body" is typing on the keys! |

not sure if these still exist or not-- external modem? I think they exist, but they are not relevant to this sitiation gopher (I think this is what it was called, but I think it was around before 2004)? I'm not sure what this is .... so it is not relevant to this sitiation a certain listserv? It's not this either ... but this one is more relevant to the situation than the others in this list a certain search engine? no a certain site on computer where you bought/sold items?no did you type to communicate with other people? yes ... but I am still able to do that did you type to retrieve information from the computer? yes ... this is more in the area where the difficulty lies did you type to communicate with other computers? yes |

is it an early version of messenger? Remember in the early nineties at Uni using a mainframe program that enable me to "talk" to other students and staff on the uni network . Maybe the advance into PC based rooms has consigned these networks to /dev/null??? |

anything to do with windows version (ie windows xp?) no can you no longer find something on the computer the way you used to?YES-ish. This answer could be misleading, so I'll explain that the "-ish" relates to how you define "on the computer". There is something I can no longer find ... is it something that used to be free but is no longer free? no |

Have you physically lost/don't have part of your computer? Have you got a new computer? No ... that's why I thought the previous reply might be misleading. It's not something which is/was physically "on" my computer, but something which was/is "on" my computer in the sense that The Simpsons are "on" television. |

you said "no" in response to whether it had to do with a certain site, but does it have to do with the internet at all? forums? newsgroups? if it does involve the internet, does it involve movies? graphics? print information? smileys? [I noticed we can't do smileys here--and I never wanted to use them until I realized we couldn't :0) ] |

One forum in particular... newsgroups? no if it does involve the internet, does it involve movies? no graphics? yes-ish print information? no smileys? no, but ... [I noticed we can't do smileys here--and I never wanted to use them until I realized we couldn't :0) ]...this is EXTREMELY close |

I'm pretty sure no-one can Is it a particular programme that no longer exists? no A website? no Is it this forum? One of the things that doesn't work any more? That's it ... Inserting pictures? no The last day/last week/search things? Not that one either ... though I do find the lack of those particularly frustrating. **********Spoiler********** I've recently revisited this forum after an absence of about a year. When I was a more regular visitor, I sometimes felt a small tinge of guilt at never following the advice offered on the introductory page which says: "Please occasionally hit on one of the adverts as this helps defray the costs of running the forum." The advice is still there ... but the adverts are not. I used to be able to do it, but I didn't. Now it seems like I can't do it at all ... Thanks to everyone who took part and who asked such incisive questions ...I hope to return more frequently!(insert non-existant smiley face) |
