it=an invention? activity? job? something being sold? an object? An idea?
Is it something that one would do anyway, so they might as well get paid for it?

Has it more than... I couldn't figure out how man employees this particular company has, although there are many companies that do this service, some large, some small.

Well, like any company, it's going to have secretaries, janitors, IT people, accountants, etc. But as for the profession that most closely represents what this specific type of company does, the closest category would be "medical/health services".
