My siblings don't think I'm an astronaut, nor do I suspect they would think that. They are simply doing something which I, jokingly, explain this way.

I had guessed that..nice to have it confirmed! BTW at least where I come from the phrase to be on another planet means to be distracted and not paying attention to what is happening around you.

doing something? not saying? one action or a set of actions? is this a common action? do they understand the reference? if they don't know about it, would they?

Does this something require other things to do it with? Special equipment? Do they do it at particular times of the day? mealtimes? bedtime? Getting up? coming home or leaving home? do they do it every day? most days? occasionally? rarely? intentionally? automatically? if you pointed out to them what they were doing would they stop? would they want to stop but find it very difficult to do so?

Does the something have to do with communication? eating? sport? school/work? housework? games? music? television?

...something common enough that you would probably find it in a regular grocery store?
...something associated with a particular locale?

If they did this thing while you were away, would this still demonstrate that they "think you're an astronaut"?

Do they say something of relevance while they're doing this?

Do you have to clean up after them? Is that relevant?

Is the particular aspect of space/being an astronaut that is relevant...

would it be important to find out what these individually wrapped food items are? if so, cheese? some sort of dessert--cakes, pastries, cookies (biscuits)? something that leaves crumbs?

does some of the food get on the floor? do the wrappers get left on the floor? do crumbs get left on the floor?

With regards to the crumbs--
Is the mess left simply because of them eating it?
Do they create crumbs in a different way--rubbing food together? mashing between fingers? throwing food?

Should we focus on how they create the crumbs? the means by which you have to clean it up? how often you have to clean it up? the fact that you have to clean up the mess?

You said that from someone else's point of view it would be a small mess--did you think it to be a big mess? (especially if you had to clean it up?) I know when my son was a year old he would throw some of his food at every meal--it wasn't a huge mess, but it still drove me crazy because I had to clean it up.

This comes from something I've read in a magazine a few years ago, claiming that astronaut sleep with crumbs in their beds before flying into space, as a part of their training to withstand the incomfortable life in space.
Since my siblings leave crumbs on my bed...
