Are the 2 'he' the same person? Is he a HAM? Was the problem about him? Was this a schoolclass? Was the problem a math problem? Anything school-related? Was this FYOI or FAOS (From An Open Source)?

did he solve the problem in the class?

does it matter that he was late and solved the unsolvable problem? could he solve the problem if he was early to class? could he solve the problem if he was on time to class?

did the teacher make him try to solve the problem because he came into the class late?

did he have an excuse for being late? is it relevant why he was late?

was the problem in a book? on the board? did the teacher tell the class the problem?

Those answers make me think that I know this one, johan. Would you like me to finish it off so that you can put up another one?

OK, unless I'm completely offbase, it's an anecdote told about Gauss during his primary school years (although what age he was varies, from quite young (second-grade-ish) to young teens.

The reason that the "unsolvable" problem is assigned also varies, sometimes stating that the class had been unruly and it was assigned in an effort to keep them quiet, sometimes that the teacher had something else that he had to do, and sometimes that it was assigned as punishment for tardyness.

What all versions do agree on, though, is that the entire class was set the problem of finding the sum of all the numbers between 1 and 1000, (some say 1 and 100,) inclusive, and that Gauss put down his pencil after only a short time announcing that he was done. When the teacher questioned him, he proved to have the right answer, and the teacher couldn't understand how he had gotten it so fast. He then explained that instead of trying to add the huge column of individual numbers, he realized that they formed 500 pairs of numbers each totaling 1001, and that all he had to do was multiply 1001 by 500 to get the total, 500500.

This is, I think, a different story - not about Gauss, but about a mathematician named Dantzig. You can read the details here.
