Now I'm puzzled; I assumed that a judge would be considered part of the Justice System... Is legislation/court decision about the death penalty relevant? Any other law that went into effect before he was executed? Did the incorrect date mean that he was not eligible for something that would've otherwise saved him? That evidence exonerating him couldn't be used? Wouldn't be found in time? |

Was one date on a weekend, or one just before and one just after a weekend? Was he actually guilty of the crime? Did the Judge knowingly write the wrong date? Did the Judge later know the date he wrote caused the man's death? Did the Judge later regret writing the wrong date? Was evidence found that cleared the man's name? The date was related to an "appeal" but was not actually the date of an appeal? Was it the date he could ask for an appeal? Anything to do with bail, or with good behavior? Does it matter how long after the written date the man was executed? |

Was an appeal date set for the dead guy? Was he executed before that date? Was what would've happened on the 27th too late because dead guy was already dead? I know that out here in Cafilnoria a death sentence generates an automatic appeal (as opposed to Texas where they just walk you straight from the courtroom to the execution chamber...); is that relevant here? |

I keep seeing "Yopes" about the subject of appeal so... is any actual appeal,or refernce thereof, relevant? is any pursuit of appeal relevant? if so, by the one who was executed? or representation therof? is yope because there a relevant legal motion which is like but not exactly an appeal? is there a better name for what was planned on the intended date? if we are talking appeal.. is an appeal for a person other other than the executed one relevant? is there a relevant mistake or misprint in which one person believes he is referring to an appeal and another person is actually referring to something else? |

is the date of appeal at all a part of the puzzle? would an appeal be the relevant factor that would save the man's life according to the puzzle? or is there another potentially life-saving factor here? does date of appeal have any relationship to intended date in the puzzle? mistaken date? |

is a stay of execution relevant? is the intended date a stay of execution? was an appeal date set? was the man executed on the wrong date? was the defendant going for an appeal due to mistrial a result of the wrong date? was the appeal because of the wrong date? was an appeal denied? was the judge who wrote the wrong date a judge from the higher court which was being appealed to? is there any more relevance to the days of the month other than being 3 days apart? if only the days were changed to 12 and 15 would the rest of the puzzle stikll work? |

May I attempt to $p0iL now? :o) A man was found guilty of murder, and sentenced to death. He then requested an appeal. The judge accidently wrote that the deadline for starting appeal process was on the 27th. actually it was the 24th. They filed for appeal on the 26th, 2 days too late, so the appeal was denied. Without appeal he lost his chance to be exonerated, the lower court's decision was affirmed, Thus he was executed. |

May I attempt to $p0iL now? :o) of course A man was found guilty of murder, and sentenced to death. He then requested an appeal. The judge accidently wrote that the deadline for starting appeal process was on the 27th. actually it was the 24th. They filed for appeal on the 26th, 2 days too late, so the appeal was denied. Without appeal he lost his chance to be exonerated, the lower court's decision was affirmed, Thus he was executed.Exactly! That's a SPOILER I based this puzzle on an actual case, the only difference being that the real case did not involve the death penalty. But hey, this is a lateral puzzle! Someone had to die!!! Here's the short article about the real case: Ohio inmate Keith Bowles may spend the rest of his life in prison just because a federal judge miscalculated Bowles' deadline for appealing his case. Bowles was convicted of murder in 1999, and his federal petition for a writ of habeas corpus was denied in 2004. However, the federal judge wrote "Feb. 27" as the deadline for appealing (mistakenly, because federal rules gave Bowles only until Feb. 24). Bowles' Feb. 26 appeal was dismissed as too late by the U.S. Court of Appeals and, in June 2007, by the U.S. Supreme Court. [New York Times, 6-17-07] |
