Tom, Dick, & Harry are three midshipmen (students & future officers) at the US Naval Academy. One day, they are talking about why they picked the Naval Academy over the other US Military Academies--the Air Force Academy & West Point (the academy for the army).Tom says, "My father was a marine & I want to follow in his footsteps," Dick says, "I've always loved the sea." Harry says, "My reason is unique in our class & probably in the whole history of the service academies." What is it?? |

Hey Nimue, given this one is new and improved, do you want me to delete the other one? Did Harry actually want to be a naval officer? Would he have preferred to be an officer in the Air Force or Army? Was he indifferent between the three? If all the training was done at the same place, would he have been indifferent? Has Harry ever been to West Point or the Air Force Academy? Is Harry's age relevant? religion? politics? upbringing? any physical charecteristics? Are Tom and Dick's stories relevant to this puzzle in any way other than as background? |

All three of these are H/A/M? Is this puzzle historical at all? I.e. Does it have to do with trying to be the first X in the naval academy? X being some characteristic we have to come up with? |

Is anyone else who has ever been in the navy relevant? anyone else who has ever been in the army? the air force? Are any of his teachers relevant? his fellow students? his potential teachers or fellow students if he'd gone to a different academy? Is it relevant that the Navy has boats? might he decide to say, fly a plane in the navy and still want to go to their academy for the same reason? |

Would you say Harry's reason was more a reason for: going to the Naval academy rather than one of the other academies? Not wanting to go to one of the other academies? Wanting to be a naval officer? not wanting to be an officer in one of the other forces? His reason was unique because: it is unlikely that someone in his circumstance would choose to go to the Naval academy? it is unlikely that anyone would ever be in the same circumstances? he has some relevant charecteristic which no-one else has ever had? |

If anybody who wanted to join the military went to the same academy and only decided afterwards which branch they wanted to join, would Harry have chosen to join the navy for the same reason? If there was no academy but simply training on the job would he have chosen the Navy for the same reason? Is the differences between the activities performed by the three branches relevant? Or just differences in the academies? Would Harry have been allowed to attend one of the other academies if he wanted to? If not, forbidden by law? The academy staff? Family? If he had joined a different academy, would he have been unhappy? Embarrassed? Unable to do as well as in the naval academy? Are his unusual circumstances concerning him? Physically? Mentally? His background? Family? People he knows? |

Is Harry's full name relevant? Does he have the same name as anyone famous? A famous military person? Would there be something that others would find amusing about him training at the army or air force academy? Supposing he wanted to train as say a medic with one of the three branches, so would be performing effectively the same job whichever he chose-would he still have chosen the navy? |

Is it his name in conjunction with the academies that people would find amusing? Is Harry's christian name actually Harry? Henry? Harrison? Is his christian name relevant at all? Should we find his last name? Do his first name and last name together sound like a word? A phrase? A name? A person? Something which has a connection with the army and airforce, but not the navy? Or has a connection with the navy but noit the other two? Is Harry's name the only relevant characteristic he has? If someone who didn't know he had any connection to the military at all heard his name, would they find it amusing? If not, would they find it amusing if they were then told that he was in the air force/army? If they were told that he was in the navy? Are the actual words army, navy, air force or West Point relevant? |

Are the uniforms of the different branches relevant at all? The various ranks one can achieve? Is there some position that exists in the air force and army that when coupled with Harry's last name sounds funny? Or embarrassing? Is Harry's last name a common one? Would it help to guess the obviou like Smith, Jones etc? Or would it be more helpful to solve the rest of the puzzle then find his name? |
