....
Are the two possessions identical? similar in any way?
Is the cleaning related to the possessions? caused by them?
Are either of the possessions alive?
Is it relevant where he is? Inside? inside his house? his place of work? someone else's house?

Is he expecting company? Does he feel he's in danger? Did he wake up and begin to clean? Come home and begin to clean? Does he feel the carpet has to be clean because the possessions are there?

Is it a special kind of hotel? A high-rise? A cheap motel? Apartments?

Are the two objects...
found in hotel rooms? Taken with people when they vacation? Found in cars? Is one a car? Are these objects specifically useful/owned by hotel owners? Is Item 1 (either one) bigger than a coin? A shoe? A chair? A bed? Is Item 2 bigger than a coin? A shoe? A chair? A bed?

Are they made of leather? Ice? Something edible?

BTW folks. The fact that the gentleman happens to be Norman Bates is no longer relevant. I did this to assist you with guessing the nature of the two objects. So you should just concern yourselves with the puzzle statement and what you've learned thus far. So questions about dressing up as your dead mother , showers, and mummified remains will be on the wrong track. Your task is to sum up what is going on in as few words as possible. The target is 5 words although the really clever amongst you will provide an even shorter answer.

Govenrnment health warning : This puzzle contains a groan factor which may be damaging to your (mental)health and may result in the puzzle setter being shunned directly following a severe pelting with rotten fruit and/or vegatables.

Is it relevant what type of birds they are?
So are we looking for an insanely awful pun?
Something which in some way summarises the phrase " a man is vacuuming his hotel under the gaze of two stuffed birds"?
Will the phrase impart the information that the man is vacuuming? That he owns a hotel? That he is in a hotel? That there are stuffed animals in the room? That the animals are birds? the species of bird?

So are we looking for an insanely awful pun? i'm afraid so
Something which in some way summarises the phrase " a man is vacuuming his hotel under the gaze of two stuffed birds"? on the right track
Will the phrase impart the information that the man is vacuuming? yes That he owns a hotel? no. for this to work it could be any man cleaning any carpet or floor That he is in a hotel? no the motel connection was only to give you the stuffed birdsThat there are stuffed animals in the room? the fact that they are stuffed is not mentioned. It was the only plausible way i could explain their presence That the animals are birds? yes the species of bird? yes

Let's see... birds of prey...
eagle? kite? falcon? owl? harrier? buzzard? vulture?

Will the phrase also tell us the name of the man? Anything else about him? Will it tell us what he's hoovering up?

Will the final phrase sound like: a song title? a line from a song? a film title? book title? some well-known phrase that doesn't fit into any of the above categories?

Assuming it will sound like some other phrase, will the meaning of this phrase havea anything to do with the puzzle?

Let's see... birds of prey...
eagle? kite? falcon? owl? harrier? buzzard? vulture? none of these

Will the phrase also tell us the name of the man? no Anything else about him? only what he's doing Will it tell us what he's hoovering up? no

Will the final phrase sound like: a song title? a line from a song? a film title? book title? none of these some well-known phrase that doesn't fit into any of the above categories? yes not sure you'd describe it a phrase but it will form a familiar group of words

Assuming it will sound like some other phrase, will the meaning of this phrase havea anything to do with the puzzle? no. The phrase doesn't actually happen to have a particular meaning but you will have heard it before (I hope)

SPOILER

Well done to all who played a good team effort. For those to young to remember the 80's music scene Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark were a band whose name was shortened to OMD . One of their biggest hits was "Senses working overtime" which i'm sure this puzzle forced you all to do. Now get those rotten tomatoes ready

I honestly don't recall OMD's biggest hit on this side of the Atlantic, but wasn't "Senses Working Overtime" a hit by XTC?
