So the truth is, those may be backwards, but these must be forward.

Possible Quickie...

Do they refer to something that moves?
Something that is stationary but must appear in different directions?
Signs?
Is it something on the written page? Anything to do with copying something in reverse?

Is the FA that it appears that I was treating 'those' and 'these' as one and the same? Yes, and something else They're kinda similar types of things though aren't they? They are similar types of things
Are they tangible objects? No, this was the other part of the FA, good job ruling it out
Is it something seen on a computer? Yup

Alphabets YES! Good job... 'these' are the letters of the alphabet and how things are read? This part I need you to rephrase

So now all that's left to find out is what 'those' yopishly similar to alphabets things are (should be a piece of cake) and why they can be backwards but alphabets can only be forward in this particular puzzle!

Does it depend on which language they are used for? So a lot of Arab alphabets are read from right to left. Chinese is read from bottom to top and our alphabet is read from left to right (presumably 'forwards' to our way of thinking) I'm thinking that the Russian alphabet is read in the same way as ours.

Bit of a BLOOPER, when I said they are things seen on a computer, I mean that you CAN see them on computer. (Like alphabets, you're looking at them right now) But computers are irrelevant to the puzzle.

Do "those" actually look any different if they're backwards? Not really, other than the fact that they are backwards
Are they symbols of some sort? numbers? This one, digits tally charts?

'These' are alphabets, and 'those' are numbers. Now where can numbers be backwards, but alphabets can't?

or simply in the correct direction?

Would this work for any alphabet?

Nothing to do with sign language?

or simply in the correct direction? Correct is debatable. I prefer Usual

Would this work for any alphabet? FA, I'll even let it out, it only works for all the alphabets.

Love to know the definition of all the alphabets! So we are talking about a collection of alphabets? that have ever existed? even those that have been lost? including those that have yet to be invented? What about the phonetic alphabet? or the BSL manual alphabet? braille? morse code alphabet? semaphore alphabet? or are we just talking about written ones?

Are the numbers in the traditional number symbols? or written as words? are we talking simply the digits from 1 to 9? 0? is 0 before (after)1 or after(before)9?

Would it work for other alphabets?
forward is a then b then c etc? until we reach z? or can it break before that? I'll lay it down, coz its tougher to answer the questions. In this situation that the puzzle refers to, numbers may be counted up or down, but alphabets are only allowed to be like this: a, b, c, d, e, ...,y,z. Not the other way around. What is the situation?

Are the numbers in the traditional number symbols? or written as words? are we talking simply the digits from 1 to 9? 0? is 0 before (after)1 or after(before)9?
Are we talking real numbers? rational? integers? cardinal? ordinal? Just numbers 1 to w/e in sequence or back

No, this isn't something a person habitually does. I'm speaking of a particular situation where this is how it is done. What situation would a person only say a,b,c,...,z but not z,y,x,...,a and 1,2,3,... and also 100,99,98 (any of these 3 may be required)?

Another hint, this is something the person is MADE to do

************ SPOILER ***************

Field sobriety tests: Note the subtle initialization of the puzzle title ;-)

A common myth is that the alphabet must be recited backwards, however, this is never done during an FST, as many sober people are unable to do this. Try it, it isn't as easy as it may seem, takes quite a bit of concentration!
