There's a certain demographic category of people in the US who were underprivileged but who, on the average, ended up exceeding most Americans in education & also having a lower than average crime rate. This is not a racial or ethnic category. What is it??

Does it have to do with NOT owning certain pieces of technology? I.e. I used to consider somebody with without a TV underprivileged. But I definately get more work done without it!

Immigrants / Refugees? No. Immigrants generally do better than average--in the US & every other country I have information about. But this is hardly surprising--people with the energy & initiative to uproot themselves & move to another country are often above average in other ways, too. Am I prejudiced because my father was an immigrant? Well. . . my mother wasn't.

Until I was 13, I grew up without a TV. My family was middle-class; so this was my parents' choice rather than an economic necessity. I think it was one of their few mistakes. It deprived me of a source of pleasure & gave me nothing to contribute during many schoolyard conversations--all for no compensating benefit.

Category definition... Location in the sense of...
City vs. Rural?
Type of residence?
Penthouse vs. Ground floor?
Big Family vs. single child?
Having to commute to school?
Distance from school?
Distance from library?

Y'know... my grandfather once told me that he liked to live in college towns because there was a certain quality of life and quality of people he was used to... is there something to this?

City vs. Rural? no
Type of residence? yes
Penthouse vs. Ground floor? Well, certainly not a penthouse
Big Family vs. single child? yesish
Having to commute to school? no
Distance from school? no
Distance from library? . BTW, one of the thungs my parents did right was make sure our family lived just a few blocks from the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, which was one of the best public libraries in the world

Y'know... my grandfather once told me that he liked to live in college towns because there was a certain quality of life and quality of people he was used to... is there something to this? Well...
Good Things:
inexpensive concerts, lectures, art exhibits, etc.
good, cheap reataurants
liberal atmosphere
good bookstores
Bad Things:
noisy (college students are NOT quiet neighbors)
housing is often expensive
if professors aren't the most status-conscious people in the world, I'd hate to meet whoever is

By "exceeding most Americans in education?" do you mean more likely to graduate from high school? from college? or something else?

By "lower crime rate" do you mean they are less likely to commit crimes? Or become victims of crimes? Any particular type of crime relevant?

Status concious, more than professors. I would say people like Al Gore. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for bogus about global warming! Are you an expert in climatology? I'm not; so I don't know whether his warnings are bogus.Even if they are, that wouldn't entail that he's status-conscious, rather than being, maybe, inept.

Are all people in the same circumstances lower crime and better edu. people?

Do the youth of this category go to public school?
which would you think is more likely.. for the relevant demographic to..
celebrate being in the category?
be unhappy about being in the category?
be unaware of being in the category?

While you said it is possible for people to be born into this category, you also answered "no " to "are people born into this category".
does this mean that it is possible, but not normal?
If abnormal is there another way one normally comes into this category?

Can the following people be in this category?
a homeless person?
a single person?
a divorcee?
a prisoner?
someone in a coma?
a poet?
someone without parents? without children?

in order to be in this category do you have to be "at one time underprivileged"

is there one specific thing missing from the lives of whom you call underprivileged?

or are you using the word as a popular social label?

Do these people live in the "poorer" neighborhoods or houses among all the rich people? I.e. They benefit from the good schools generated by all the taxes collected from the levies, but are constantly surrounded by examples of what "could be" if only they applied themselves?

Is this demographic truly underprivileged? Or is it a matter of perspective? Is it a lack of equipment? A lack of space?

can whatever it is that the underprivileged are lacking, be at some point gained?
If I had it could I lose it?
Can the diet of this group be used to identify the group?

If you went to a home where a single nuclear family from the relevant group lived, could you tell they lived there from the..
outside?
inside?
from looking in their garbage can?
at a book with their family tree?
refrigerator?
dresser drawers?
financial ledger?

Could you be in this group if you were:
an orphan living in an orphanage? an only child living with a single parent? an only child living with both parents? a twin living with a single parent? a twin living with both parents? an only child living with adopted parents?
The younger of two siblings? the older of two siblings?
The younger of three siblings? the middle of three siblings? the older of three siblings?
An only child living with some extended family? grandparents? grandparents and parents? one of two children living in either of the above situations? one of three?
Are males and females equally represented in the group?

Al Gore is a good, walking example of why science shouldn't be influenced strongly by politics.

Does this have to do with a lack of a utility of some type? lack of something electronic? lack of some source of information? lack of access to a quality publicly operated institution?

Is the type of home that is used the main discriminant? only discriminant? One bedroom only? One bathroom only? Apartment? Mobile home? Boathouse? State-owned housing? Homeless? Suburbia? Not-so-suburbia? Is home ownership the discriminant? Would these home dwellers need to mow their lawns regularly?

Is this most common among... East Coast? West Coast? South? The Strip Of Land I Live In Which Might As Well Be Canada? Would it be more common outside the US? Does the same 'higher quality of life' apply there? Is it best to be described as not specific to any region?

Could this be described more in terms of a lifestyle or in terms of income? Does membership imply a more relaxed lifestyle?

Oh, thanks bentarm. I seem not to be seeing a single thing recently. Or maybe I'm ADD Is this a rea;l syndfrome or just what parents & teacher call kids who get bored in school? Or both??

****** SPOIILER ***********
People who grew up in orphanages certainly seem underprivileged, but according to something I read in an American newspaper a few years back, they end up exceeding most Americans in education & also having a lower than average crime rate.I don't know why. I also don't know how they are at lateral puzzles, but there's a new one awaiting you at the bottom of the page!!
