Why did the young lady move so slowly and carefully sideways from the right to the left washbasin and back again? |

did she think there was no soap at the first one? was there something about the way the water came out that she didn't like? was there something about the mirror at the first washbasin that bothered her? was someone crowding her at the first washbasin? and maybe she moved, but then the person who was crowding her moved, so she went back? was something else in her way when she was at the first washbasin? did she not like the first washbasin (or something about it), moved to the one to the left, and realized someone was at that one (or already close to it), so she moved back to the one on the right? |

Is it relevant that a young lady is involved? Would an older woman do the same thing? Is the lady thin? Fat? Is there something about her external appearance that is relevant? Did she move back to the right basin because she changed her mind about something? Is it relevant that she was at the right basin first? Would the puzzle work if she started from the left basin? Was she with a friend? Relative? Did she know anyone in the toilet? Was she moving sideways because she had very little space to move? Was she trying to avoid brushing against someone/something standing near the basins? |

did she think there was no soap at the first one? Not this was there something about the way the water came out that she didn't like? No was there something about the mirror at the first washbasin that bothered her? No was someone crowding her at the first washbasin? Yesish and maybe she moved, but then the person who was crowding her moved, so she went back? Not exactly was something else in her way when she was at the first washbasin? No did she not like the first washbasin (or something about it), moved to the one to the left, and realized someone was at that one (or already close to it), so she moved back to the one on the right? No Are any movement sensors involved? No Is it relevant that a young lady is involved? Yesish Would an older woman do the same thing? Yes Is the lady thin? Reasonably Fat? No Is there something about her external appearance that is relevant? Only peripherally Did she move back to the right basin because she changed her mind about something? No Is it relevant that she was at the right basin first? No, so... Would the puzzle work if she started from the left basin? ...yes Was she with a friend? No Relative? Yesish verging on yes (I consider friends and relatives to be disjoint concepts here) Did she know anyone in the toilet? No Was she moving sideways because she had very little space to move? No Was she trying to avoid brushing against someone/something standing near the basins? No |

"the right to the left washbasin" - so were there exactly two washbasins? relevant? Might she have moved quickly to achieve the same result? Would this have been considered rude? embarrassing? Are there any mirrors involved in this puzzle? did both basins work normally? Is the way the taps work relevant? push-activated? turning? Is there a soap-dispenser? a bar of soap? a hand dryer? Might a man do the same thing? Did she wash her hands? at the right basin? the first time? second time? at the left basin? Has she just been to the toilet? Is any makeup involved in this puzzle? |

you missed my question Sorry. No, she did not look for a lost earring. Was she trying to apply makeup? Yesish Or check her makeup? More of the former But she didn't have a mirror? Correct. but before this goes off on a wildly wrong tangent, I should add that the makeup-application is only of secondary importance. Did the movement allow her to apply makeup neatly somehow? No was she using something else in the washbasin as a reflection to see if she could see how well she had applied her makeup? maybe the tap? Both no |

Was there another relevant person in the bathroom with her? Someone she knew? Was she on the phone? Was she applying lipstick? eyeliner? mascara? blusher? powdering her nose? Did she run the tap at either basin? She wouldn't have moved quickly because: it would have been more difficult to achieve the desired result if she'd moved quickly? it wouldn't have been possible for her to move quickly? Did she move so that she could apply the eyeliner? I mean, did she place the liner at one tip of her eye, and then move slowly so that it traces the outline of her eye, and then move back to give it a second coat? Did the application of her makeup become easier because of moving? Did the other relevant person have anything to do with her putting on makeup? Did the other person serve as an obstruction? Or an aid in some way? Is it relevant what the other person was doing? Had there been no basins in the toilet, would she still have moved? If there were mirrors in the toilet, would she have moved? |

Was there more than one other relevant person in the bathroom with her? Was the other relevant person female? were they all? were you in the bathroom with her? Did anyone speak to her at any point in this puzzle? If she hadn't been applying makeup, might she still have made the same movement? If she had been applying lipgloss? blusher? powdering her nose? Did she use the bathroom? Just to check - there are no mirrors involved in this puzzle, but were there any mirrors on the wall of the bathroom? Did the movement in some way facilitate the application of her makeup? I'm no expert, but isn't it quite difficult to apply eyeliner without a mirror? Is anything to do with how the stall doors open relevant? how many stalls there are? is anything relevant in the room other than than the basins? If she was just in a room with two basins in it and nothing else, might she have made the same movement? as long as the same people were in there with her? |

No openings of any type anywhere in this room besides the doorway? vents? any openings in the ceiling? Does this take place in a somewhat old bathroom in a building in a city? or does it take place in a park restroom with little or no trace of civilization? Is ventilation relevant? I'm trying to think of why you would put 'NO' in caps for windows ... no windows, no mirrors, what exactly is there in this bathroom? sinks? stalls? toilets? more than one? a doorway? two doorways? more than two? a door? one that locks? a trashcan of some sort? any dispensers? Apologies if the above has been answered elsewhere. |

Misread that. There are sorta windows then? Glass windows? Plastic? Something that you can see through without being able to go through? In a wall? the floor? the ceiling? If you said 'ish' then they aren't what people would normally consider windows, or there's some restriction that prevents them from behaving exactly like windows we'd expect, right? Can these window-ish things open? Does that matter? Would this puzzle be different if there were shades or otherwise that completely blocked out the window areas? Is lighting relevant? Are there lights in the bathroom? skylights? are they off? on? open? closed? |

No openings of any type anywhere in this room besides the doorway? vents? any openings in the ceiling? Just the doorway Does this take place in a somewhat old bathroom in a building in a city? This or does it take place in a park restroom with little or no trace of civilization? Is ventilation relevant? I'm trying to think of why you would put 'NO' in caps for windows ... I didn't put NO in caps for windows. I put NO in caps for "no windows but a wid opening that would qualify as a window if there were glass. We have established that there is a window no windows There is a window, but..., no mirrors Correct, what exactly is there in this bathroom? sinks? stalls? toilets? more than one? a doorway? All of these two doorways? more than two? a door? One entry door to the restroom as a whole. Most certainly ordinary stall doors on the stalls one that locks? a trashcan of some sort? any dispensers? Probably all of these Apologies if the above has been answered elsewhere. No problem :-) Misread that. There are sorta windows then? Yes. Glass windows? Plastic? Something that you can see through without being able to go through? Yes. Glass. In a wall? Yes the floor? the ceiling? No to these If you said 'ish' then they aren't what people would normally consider windows, or there's some restriction that prevents them from behaving exactly like windows we'd expect, right? Correct. But as I said, I'm really not sure about the 'ish'. One might call it a window without further qualifications. Can these window-ish things open? No Does that matter? Only as a small hint as to what is special about it Would this puzzle be different if there were shades or otherwise that completely blocked out the window areas? If that were the case, this puzzle would not exist. Is lighting relevant? Are there lights in the bathroom? skylights? are they off? on? open? closed? The lighting in the room is ordinary and irrelevant. |

anything to do with the sun or clouds, maybe? I am trying to picture the bathroom in my mind, and I am thinking that if I am putting on makeup in a bathroom, and a window is above the basin, maybe I would move if the sun hit in a certain way--maybe too bright for my eyes...I would move over a bit to see if the brightness was different at the other basin. If I realized I was moving into someone at the other basin, then maybe I would move back? but that's what I would do! Any of this on the right track? |

If you look through the window, can you see outside the bathroom? You need to specify exactly what that mesns. Tentative answer: Yes Is it relevant what you can see? Yes Is the window up against a brick wall or something? Brick wall, no. Something - well, yope. Was the woman looking out of the window at any point in this puzzle? Awkward way of putting it, but yes. Was anyone else looking in through the window? Yes anything to do with the sun or clouds, maybe? No I am trying to picture the bathroom in my mind, and I am thinking that if I am putting on makeup in a bathroom, and a window is above the basin, maybe I would move if the sun hit in a certain way--maybe too bright for my eyes...I would move over a bit to see if the brightness was different at the other basin. Can you see well through this door-window? Is light being bent or distorted through it in any way that is relevant to this? is light being reflected through the window, and into her eyes, which is irritating? How the hell is there a FA on 'is there anything relevant outside the window'... can the door open? and if I were to open it, and step through, and close it, I would be standing on the other side? and maybe there's something there, in the other side, that is relevant to this puzzle? |

if I stood in front of the window and pointed my eyes at it, would I be able to see through the glass? would I be able to see what was on the other side of the glass? Would this thing be outside? Would it be 1cm away from the other side of the window? 10cm away? 100? 1000? 100,000? 1,000,000? 10^10? (I think that's about the distance to the moon....) Can you see well through this door-window? Door-window? You can see well through the window, yes. Is light being bent or distorted through it in any way that is relevant to this? No is light being reflected through the window, and into her eyes, which is irritating? No How the hell is there a FA on 'is there anything relevant outside the window'... can the door open? That is not a yes/no question :-) and if I were to open it, and step through, and close it, I would be standing on the other side? and maybe there's something there, in the other side, that is relevant to this puzzle? Note your change of wording. "Other side" is not necessarily synonymous with "outside" if I stood in front of the window and pointed my eyes at it, would I be able to see through the glass? Yes would I be able to see what was on the other side of the glass? Yes Would this thing be outside? Depends on what you mean by 'outside'. I'd say "no", but that's my definition. Would it be 1cm away from the other side of the window? 10cm away? 100? 1000? 100,000? 1,000,000? 10^10? (I think that's about the distance to the moon....) I reckon some 3-4 m, but you choose a dangerous (misleadingwise) wording. Did the woman think that the person looking in through the window was her reflection? NO Did the woman look at the window at any point? Yes, in order to... look through it? Yes Was there someone outside the bathroom looking in through the window? YES |

Did she want the person on the other side (for the record, I thought 'outside' in that context basically meant 'other side') to see her? to see her face? to see the makeup she was applying? Or did she want to look through to the other side to see if it was dark enough on the other side to see her own reflection? and when she realized that it wouldn't work, and someone else was looking in at her half-done makeup, she went back? |

ok, trying to go in a different direction here and probably way off: was there someone outside that the woman was trying to avoid? maybe stalking her? and she moved to get out of his line of vision? and when he moved, she moved back to where she had been? is she a fugitive, possibly? Nothing like this Did she want the person on the other side (for the record, I thought 'outside' in that context basically meant 'other side') OK. Then yes, the other person was outside the window. to see her? Yes to see her face? Yes to see the makeup she was applying? Yesish Or did she want to look through to the other side to see if it was dark enough on the other side to see her own reflection? and when she realized that it wouldn't work, and someone else was looking in at her half-done makeup, she went back? Not this scenario |

Does she want the other woman on the other side of the glass to examine her makeup? Does the other woman acknowledge her presence at all? hand signals? verbally? does she signify anything besides 'I see you'? maybe 'yes, it's on correctly' or 'no, redo it'? |

Facial gestures? Body movement of some sort? Sign language? Did she bow? wink? glare for a bit? Do the two women know each other? Is some meaningful information conveyed to the woman inside the bathroom? Does that information have anything whatsoever to do with her makeup? Was her makeup on to her tastes when she looked out the window? Did the woman outside have makeup on? Was she mimicking her style? |

'I think all of the others'? So, she made facial gestures, used body movement of some sort, bowed, winked, and glared for a bit? ... Is the woman outside a bit annoyed at the woman inside for wearing basically the same makeup? Is the woman inside a bit embarrassed to have completely imitated the woman outside? Is the idea of mirrors, etc. relevant anymore? Have we figured out enough to forget about that entirely? Or is she looking back at someone that looks almost identical to her, so for a second she thinks that she is looking in a mirror? Is this an ordinary scene in an ordinary bathroom? or is this some sort of stage show? sitcom? What is their relationship: are they good friends? kinda good friends? not so good friends, but still friends? coworkers? coworkers that are generally amicable to each other? generally hostile? are they related? Did the woman outside expect to see the woman inside; was she looking into the door waiting for her to show her face? Vice versa? |

They are identical twins? Is the door connecting two identical bathrooms? They made absolutely the same gestures at each other, in the same order, at the same time? They both moved slowly and carefully to the other basin and back again at the same time, synchronized? Is this a play? Some sort of live production? Is there an audience? Is the audience watching two identical women looking at each other through a glass door? Or is the audience looking through a camera from inside one of the bathrooms, with the door window looking like a mirror? They are actors? |

They are identical twins? Yes Is the door connecting two identical bathrooms? No and irrelevant They made absolutely the same gestures at each other, in the same order, at the same time? They both moved slowly and carefully to the other basin and back again at the same time, synchronized? All yes Is this a play? Noish Some sort of live production? Um...not sure if that would be the correct term Is there an audience? Sort of Is the audience watching two identical women looking at each other through a glass door? Not a door. A window. Or is the audience looking through a camera from inside one of the bathrooms, with the door window looking like a mirror? There is NO door window. We have established that the window is over the sinks. The door is some other place in the room, and totally irrelevant. They are actors? Probably. That is their role in this setup anyway identical twins? Yes does she think its her reflection? No does her twin move, so she thinks her reflection is moving, and so moves to keep up with it? No, but not too far from the truth |

Is this some sort of practical joke? Someone else is in one of the bathrooms, besides the twins. The twin in the other bathroom mirrors her twin's actions exactly, then the twin in the bathroom with the victim moves back a bit, leaving the other twin exposed and without a match. The victim freaks out. But since it obviously isn't Trigger Happy, it is by law not funny whatsoever. |

Is this some sort of practical joke? YES, it's a "candid camera" gag Someone else is in one of the bathrooms, besides the twins. The twin in the other bathroom mirrors her twin's actions exactly, then the twin in the bathroom with the victim moves back a bit, leaving the other twin exposed and without a match. The victim freaks out. It wasn't executed exactly that way, but close enough. But since it obviously isn't Trigger Happy, it is by law not funny whatsoever. I'm not familiar with the reference, alas ): *************** SPOILER ***************** Two adjacent, symmetrical public toilets have a rectangular hole cut in their separating wall, and a window pane is installed. A young girl stands in front of the window, pretending to fix her makeup. On the other side of the window is her twin sister, mimicking the heroine's every movement. Other people wanting to use the "mirror" are flabbergasted when it "doesn't work" for them, only for the young lady. http://www.webtvhub.com/twins-having-fun-vid-toilet-mirror-prank/ |
