Was he supposed to be in that place at that time? Later than he was? Much later? Was he there on totally the wrong day? Did that mean something bad happened?
The place where he was supposed to be, is it a physical place? Town? Building? Room?
Or is it more metaphorical, as in he was at the level of achievement he should have been at?

Seems like it's time for a little recap on this one.

Jim, is exactly where his boss, Mike, wants him to be. But for some reason Mike is still not impressed with Jim, ie Mike is angry.

Jim works for a company in the IT sector. He works for a computer repair company, but this scenario could also work for some other professions. But not all. There is a common denominator between the professions this would work for, that plays a part in what leads up to making Mike angry.

We have determined that Mike was unimpressed/angry also some time before this. Explore.

It is also determined that time is relevant. In fact this is the biggest part of this puzzle. There are two aspects of time that would need to be uncovered to puzzle it together.

Hint: How did Jim find out that Mike was angry?

is there a relevant time of day that jim was supposed to be anyplace ?
is there a relevant work schedule for Jim?
Is Jims arrival time at the place relevant?
Is Mike mad about Jim's arrival time at the place?

Did Jim arrive at a customer site? his own workplace? Was he going to repair a PC? Answer a service call?
Was Mike mad about a decision that Jim made? a misunderstanding of Jim's? misinterpretation?

or is a misunderstanding? misinterpretation ? of Mike's relevant?
Did Jim make Mike mad about the same thing before? similar?

Are the two relevant aspects of time both times that an event happened?

is there a relevant time of day that jim was supposed to be anyplace ? Yes

Was Mike mad about a decision that Jim made? a misunderstanding of Jim's? misinterpretation? Difficult one, but I think the least misleading answer would be No

Did Jim make Mike mad about the same thing before? It's the same thing (but beware of FA) similar?

Are the two relevant aspects of time both times that an event happened? No

Seems like this one is drying up, so I will try to kickstart it again. The company Jim and Mike was working for had just won a huge contract. And what do companies usually do to celebrate when this happens? and to say thank you to their hardworking employees that made it possible?

By being at the party - did Jim accidentally neglect one of his other duties? And this miffed Mike? Because they had just recognized him for not neglecting said duty? No to all. Mike was probably also at the party, but nothing spesific happened there, except what usually happens when people are offered free booze - they tend to get very drunk, lol.

So the company invites to a celebration; a good meal and then some drinks - free drinks. People have a good time. Mike and Jim are both at the party, and Mike sees that Jim is getting drunk. But nothing else important happens at the party. It's not a Friday though, so the following day is a working day.

But the next day, even though Jim is in the offices, Mike is angry with him. Why? Sixtyeight asked earlier if Mike was misunderstanding something, which he isn't really. But he IS jumping to conclusions about something.

So Jim finds out that Mike is angry by being yesishly told by Mike himself. But not face to face. How does he find out?

The two things about time that is relevant are time of day and also era. Explore.

Did Mike and Jim speak on the phone Yes

And I think this is close enough for a spoiler.

A friend of mine went to an party that his company arranged to say thank you to it's employees when a major contract was secured. He, Jim, ate and drank all evening, after all there was free alcohol to everyone. He cannot remember the last part of the evening.

The following morning he woke up when his mobile rang. It was an angry boss that called because he hadn't seen Jim in the offices and thought he was absent due to a hangover. His angry words were "Why are you not at work today?" My friend's brain slowly woke up, only to realize that he was in one of the toilet cubicles at work and had obviously slept there all night. Why he chose to go to work instead of going home, he cannot say to this day.
