So I'm getting the feeling that Alex decided to shoot himself because he believed he was going to starve to death and he preferred a quicker, less-painful death, is that correct? Was a police officer trying to indicate to him that he would be saved? And he misinterpreted it? Didn't understand it? Like the copper was pointing up, trying to get him to reach up and grab the bottom rung of the ladder hanging from the rescue hecillopter but he thought it meant something more like "make peace with G*d now, dude."? |

RECAP.. I read about this true story in a book. Alex was in a US state in the year 19something. He was a resident of that state and a yopish tourist. The puzzle scene is in the wilderness. He died by intentionally shooting himself to avoid death by starvation. There is one other person who is a police officer and a stranger to Alex. He did not think Alex was commiting a crime. He did not speak to nor signal Alex. A sorta misunderstanding is involved. Alex yopishly did something stupid that resulted in his death. The words are non-verbal signals or gestures. Alex could see the cop and vice versa. Alex's native tounge is irrel. Deafness and American Sign Language are irrel. Nice job everyone in revealing all these details.. but what about those words? Hint: although Alex's hands were free to do whatever he wanted, he did not put them up. Hint: hecillopters are not relevant...(: |

Is Alex lost? Is there more than one relevant plane? Was the police officer in the plane? Did the relevant plane(s) fly overhead? Or was it on the ground? If on the ground, did it take off shortly after? Leaving Alex to starve and die? Are the 'words' semaphore? Air traffic controlling signals? Or just general gestures? Would the life-saving 'words' have been directed at the police officer? Are the 'words' a cry for help? |

Leaving Alex to starve and die? so no Are the 'words' semaphore? I guess it depends on the exact definition.. there are no flags involved, nor any signaling objects.. but you are surely "pointed in the right direction" Air traffic controlling signals? no Or just general gestures?the properties of the gestures are relevant.. but I don't think "general" is a good description Would the life-saving 'words' have been directed at the police officer? yes Are the 'words' a cry for help?yope |

I'm getting confused... Does Alex feel like he's OK? Or, is he looking to be saved? Did the man in the plane attempt to help him? If Alex signaled for help, was it misunderstood as him being OK? You gave a yope to murder... Did Alex's signal cause the man in the plane to do something, which subsequently put Alex in starvation? Is Alex's source of food, and how it disappeared/got destroyed/got stolen relevant? |

Does Alex feel like he's OK? noOr, is he looking to be saved?yes Did the man in the plane attempt to help him? no If Alex signaled for help, was it misunderstood as him being OK?htis is very very close to what happened.. do you have any idea how to signal for help? You gave a yope to murder... Did Alex's signal cause the man in the plane to do something, which subsequently put Alex in starvation? Is Alex's source of food, and how it disappeared/got destroyed/got stolen relevant? none of these.. the yope to murder was because he killed himself..all that is important about food is that he ran out of food and he knew he was going to starve to death if he wans't rescued |

Praying hands for help? as opposed to waving for 'hi, isn't it a nice day'? |

Praying hands for help? as opposed to waving for 'hi, isn't it a nice day'? that's not what he did but it probably would have been better than what he did do. In fact, he indicated that he did not need a rescue. |

Did he gesture with his arms? legs? another part of the body? Did he use something else than his body (e.g. a stick, a flag, a gun)? |

Did he spell something on the ground? no Did he gesture with his arms?this legs? another part of the body? Did he use something else than his body (e.g. a stick, a flag, a gun)?no Did he give a thumbs up in a moment of mental abberation?this is close enough! Spoiler It is the story of Carl McCunn which I read about in the book "Into The Wild" by John Krakauer. I really thought that "Judgedeadd" was on to that fact especially when he named the person "Alex" Carl McCunn (1946 - 1981) was a Texan who, in March 1981, paid a bush pilot to drop him at a remote lake near the Coleen River in Alaska, on the southern margin of the Brooks Range, to photograph wildlife. McCunn flew in with 500 rolls of film, 1,400 pounds of provisions, two rifles and a shotgun, but had not arranged for the pilot to pick him up again in August. He prematurely disposed of boxes of shotgun shells in the river; used the wrong emergency hand signals to a plane that had spotted him and waved the plane off; and waited too long in the season to attempt to walk out. In February 1982 Alaska State Troopers found his body, emaciated and frozen as hard as stone, along with a 100-page diary that documented his demise. He wrote "I think I should have used more foresight about arranging my departure." Rather than starve, McCunn had shot himself in the head. (Source: Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild) From Carl's diary: In his diary, Mr. McCunn tells of being elated on sighting the plane, then realizing that he had given the wrong signal to the pilot. ''I recall raising my right hand, shoulder high and shaking my fist on the plane's second pass. It was a little cheer - like when your team scored a touchdown or something. ''Turns out that's the signal for 'ALL O.K. DO NOT WAIT!' one of the universal rescue signals: To communicate with a helicopter in sight, raise both arms (forming the letter Y) to indicate "Yes" or "I need help" and stretch one arm up and one down (imitating the letter N) for "No" or "I do not need help". Thanks everyone for playing!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_McCunn http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B0DEED61638F93AA25751C1A964948260&sec=health&spon=&pagewanted=1 |
