Hey guys...shaking the dust off the keyboard to get back to puzzling...

It can be said that, in parts of the world today, businesses enjoy higher profits because of a man whose writings appear in many books. Ironically, he didn't know that anyone appreciated his writings at the time, and even if most of us were given the chance to meet him face-to-face he wouldn't think we appreciated them either. Who is he?

Intrigued by the statement of the puzzle...

He didn't feel appreciated... because no-one knew of his writings? because they acted in a way that was contrary to his advice/philosophy? because they just simply ignored him?

Do we do the same thing? or would he think we didn't appreciate him for a different reason?

Particular kind of businesses? Shops? Law firms? cafes/restaurants? service industry?

Particular parts of the world...? Europe? North America? Central America? South America? africa? Asia? Middle East? Australia? New Zealand? on the oceans?

Do his writings appear in a particular place in writings? Not sure, can you rephrase?
Related to footnotes? No
Cliche's? No
Formatting? No
Index? No
Bibliography? No
His writing only in non-fiction? Technically yes but likely wouldn't really be called this
Have to do with copyright? No
Did he hold some official office? No
Related to publications? No

European yes writer yes but explore... British? Spanish? German? French? Dutch? Italian? Swiss? Austrian? This Greek? Belgian? Danish? Scandinavian? Portuguese? Polish? Czec? Other?

Intrigued by the statement of the puzzle... I'm glad someone is, because I usually don't host this type of puzzle but wanted to 'branch out' a little...

He didn't feel appreciated... because no-one knew of his writings? Several people knew of them, this was not the reason he felt un-appreciated
because they acted in a way that was contrary to his advice/philosophy? No
because they just simply ignored him? Yes, at least he thought so...explore!

Do we do the same thing? or would he think we didn't appreciate him for a different reason?
There are two main reasons that we would have trouble convincing him that he is appreciated, and two things that we would need to convince him we appreciate about him - depending on how much you know about him and whether or not you've had the chance to learn about his impact on business you may not appreciate him at all, while others may appreciate him very much

This is a good question, tough to answer as written, but with more exploration may lead quickly to the solution

Particular kind of businesses? Yes, most likely... Shops? Yes Law firms? Probably not cafes/restaurants? Probably not service industry? Probably not

Particular parts of the world...? Europe? I've never been to Europe, but I'm sure it is the case there
North America? Yes, since that is where I live and have experienced the 'impact' myself as well as heard about it on the news
Central America? South America? africa? Asia? Middle East? It is probably not the case in any of these places
Australia? Could likely be the case there
New Zealand? As well as there
on the oceans? No, I'd say not likely

good q's from all!

Music? Yes, and another type of writing that leads to the solution of the puzzle (but none of the above descriptions are accurate)

Was he a poet as well?

People "ignored" him... because they simply didn't pay attention? because he said "do this" and they did "that"?

Is his effect on us a negative one in his opinion? (example would be that we used him as an example of how NOT to sell things)

Relevant what kind of shops?
Would his effect be the same the whole year round, or increased at particular times of the year? (consider list of months and seasons posted)

Is he somehow responsible for mood music?

Was he a poet as well? Irrelevant

People "ignored" him... because they simply didn't pay attention? No - people did pay attention
because he said "do this" and they did "that"?
No
Is his effect on us a negative one in his opinion? (example would be that we used him as an example of how NOT to sell things) No, I'd say in his opinion it would be a positive one once he understood 20th-21st century business

Relevant what kind of shops? Somewhat, yes
Would his effect be the same the whole year round, or increased at particular times of the year? (consider list of months and seasons posted) It would be effective all year, possibly more effective around November-December

Is he somehow responsible for mood music? Yes! Now figure out the context and its effect on business, and why the creator would have a hard time understanding

Was he born in Austria? No
Did he have any relevant disability? Yes

Alright, since I know the accronym... how does a deaf composer equate to better business...

Does it have to do with freelance work? Does it have to do with dedications? Does it have to do with his music? Does it have to do with his political beliefs? Other beleifs? Something related to his deafness?

And is the reason he wouldn't think we appreciate him either because he wouldn't be able to hear our accolades?

All that remains now is to determine the relevance of his writings and his effect on business

Well unlikely that shops had access to music in the same way back then... so would it be the case that he was writing mood music in a different context? about mood music in a different context?

religious?

our lack of appreciation... Is it because we are using different music? different instruments? because he couldn't see the instruments?

Did he lay down some "principles" for creating moods... which have now been updated and changed?

Is it too simplistic to say that shopkeepers have music playing that puts customers in a better mood to make purchases... (eg christmas music to get them thinking about christmas and hence buying presents etc...)?

Well unlikely that shops had access to music in the same way back then... so would it be the case that he was writing mood music in a different context? about mood music in a different context? You're very much on the right track here - 'mood music' is very relevant here, and you are right in saying that it would not have been in existence back then. Now just make the connection between this kind of music and profitability for businesses...
religious? Not relevant

our lack of appreciation... Is it because we are using different music? No
different instruments? No
because he couldn't see the instruments? No, he could see them

Did he lay down some "principles" for creating moods... which have now been updated and changed? No

Is it too simplistic to say that shopkeepers have music playing that puts customers in a better mood to make purchases...Yes! It also affects the mood of certain other people, and discovering this will basically solve the puzzle!

(eg christmas music to get them thinking about christmas and hence buying presents etc...)? This is not the effect in context here, but is another positive effect

So... he wrote diary entries? about how music could affect moods... was he concerned with developing different moods? ie he would not appreciate our use of it because it was not the main way he saw it being used... or are you just making a statement about the quality of the music?

Is it something to do with lack of percussion tracks? so making it harder for him to sense them?

So...he wrote diary entries? No
about how music could affect moods...He possibly wrote about this, but it would not have been a primary subject
but was he concerned with developing different moods? No
ie he would not appreciate our use of it because
it was not the main way he saw it being used...
or are you just making a statement about the quality of the music? His appreciation of our use is not relevant

Is it something to do with lack of percussion tracks? No
so making it harder for him to sense them? It wasn't anything about his performance of his music that was hard for him to sense, it was something else. If you can supply that detail we'll call this one done...

about the observed effects of music on people?

but not to do with his deafness (as per question already asked)? His deafness is directly related to what he could not sense (sorry if this was confusing)

does it relate to sound? Yes, to a specific sound
Did he write about quality of tunes? Possibly
about the instruments? Likely
about the observed effects of music on people?
Likely, and this is the key element that he was mistaken about due to his deafness
Is it to do with the tracks of his that we use? No - we're almost done since we have established that Beethoven's music serves to help business today by creating a mood that deters would-be shoplifters, but this would be hard for him to understand for several reasons, namely because IF he were here today, he couldn't hear us if we spoke and may not understand sign language...this is where the 'writings' of his come into play. It's likely he wrote about quality of music, tones, instruments, and many other music-related subjects, but why did he write about this?

So was he writing about how you could represent things/people using different instruments/musical phrases etc...?

And we use these descriptions to create the feelings rather than represent them.... hmm that's kinda unclear isn't it? eg Bells are used to create a christmas feel, whereas he would have been concerned with representing the sounds of Christmas...sleigh bells church bells etc... so we are actually paying quite close homage to his work, but the context would suggest to him otherwise?

And we use these descriptions to create the feelings rather than represent them.... hmm that's kinda unclear isn't it? eg Bells are used to create a christmas feel, whereas he would have been concerned with representing the sounds of Christmas...sleigh bells church bells etc... so we are actually paying quite close homage to his work, but the context would suggest to him otherwise? Well, this is probably true but a different direction than needed...I'll go ahead and fill in the final elements:

*** SPOILER ***

It has been tested and supposedly proven in recent years that stores can deter loiterers and shoplifters by playing music by classical composers such as Beethoven. If he were alive today, he would have a hard time knowing why his music was appreciated for several reasons:

- He wouldn't understand modern business
- He wouldn't speak English
- He would possibly be deaf, as he was in his later years, which brings us to the subject of the books. When he went deaf, he communicated to many close friends by trading journal-type books where they exchanged notes. The notes had nothing to do with business practices, but with his music. He hoped that people appreciated his music then, but it is said that when he went completely deaf he would perform before audiences, and hear no response when he was done. Lest he think no one appreciated the music, someone had to physically turn Beethoven around to face the audience so that he could see that they truly appreciated the music.

Thanks to all players, especially Tsoram for some good work at the end.
