One of the best effects of the Peace Corps program (a US program where people spend 2 years as volunteers in developing countres) was unanticipated. What is it??

Is it anything to do with education? with people getting married? having children?
Did the Peace Corps (PC) voluteers take anything physical with them which is relevant?
Does this benefit manifest itself everywhere that PC volunteers go? Only in certain countries? Would it happen within hours of the volunteers getting there? within days? weeks? months? years? would it persist after they'd left? Would it persist after the country ceased to be a developing country (if this were to happen)?

Does the effect have to do with..
technology?
communication?
food?
agriculture?
recreation?
games?
hygiene?
religion?
travel?
literacy?
art?
thinking?
language?
something one does at night?
something one does in the daytime?

would a 5 year old benefit directly? 20 Y.O.? 70 Y.O.?

If some PC volunteers equipped with a time machine were to visit Malory's England, and take with them only the relevant thing referred to in the previous post, would they still confer this benefit on their visitees?

Is the physical thing that they take with them a communication device? A cell phone? Computer with Internet access? Tin cans with string between them?

Does the physical thing carry information of any kind? A book? Notes? A blueprint? Instructions?

Do the Peace Corps members do something with the item? Do they show the natives how to use it? Would it work if the item were dropped in via airplane?

Would the benefit occur if all the natives were illiterate?

Does it even matter what was in the "book"? Would any "book" work just as well? Was the "book" fiction? Non-fiction? Would this "book" be something you would normally find in a bookstore?

Does the benefit come from...

...the natives reading the "book", and gaining knowledge which is directly useful?

...the natives reading the "book", and just becoming better educated in general? Reading replacing other recreational activities?

...the "book" becoming a prized possession? Natives having to learn to share the "book"? Competing over who gets to have the "book"? Would the benefit still occur if all the natives each had their own copy of the "book"?

Is the text in the "book" fixed, like a regular book? Do the natives write in the "book", like a notebook?

Learning about the concept of printing?
Learning a new language?
If you just told the natives about the existence of books in general would that help?

Is the positive effect actually a Library? yes Some sort of collection of books? yes

******* SPOILER **********
Many Peace Corps volunteers, fearing that books would be scarce in the villages wqhere they were serving, brought along many books for their own personal reading. When their terms of duty was up, they left the books behind them. This give libraries to many people & villages that had never had them before--an unantipacated but outstandinglky beneficial effect of the Peace Corps. Please check out my new puzzle you know where!!
