Is it relevant that "Yorkshire Bastards" contains 18 characters, including spaces (a wild guess, with Tattersall's rules of naming racehorses in mind)? Any of the following relevant: Yorkshire Water? Yorkshire Bank? Yorkshire County Cricket Club? (Btw Peter: Yorkshire TV most certainly exists. I live there and watch it most evenings. You're not missing much. ) |

Was his plan that the Bank would have to write to him and apologise for an error and be forced to address the letter to Mr Yorkshire Bastards. Was he overcharged for a service? Did he lose money on an investment product? did he buy shares in the bank and they reduced in value? Did he intend to remain a customer of the bank? |

Did he invest in a fund? pension? did he take out a mortgage there? if so, did he pay it off too early? or did he have to sell the house? Just to clarify regarding losing money. Did he actually lose real money, as in xxxx dollars/euro/pounds that he had at one stage now is gone? Or in the sense that he could have gained money if bank had given him other advice, for instance not telling him that another type of account would give him higher interest? |

Aha. So was he overcharged for a service changed his name to Yorkshire Bastards and requested that they close his account thus making the Bank send him a cheque made out to his new name? Correct! There's slightly more to the puzzle, in the vein of his name being more offensive to the bank specifically than just 'Yorkshire bastards', which could refer to a number of people. |

There's slightly more to the puzzle, in the vein of his name being more offensive to the bank specifically than just 'Yorkshire bastards', which could refer to a number of people. There is indeed, but you may unwittingly have put people off the scent by this reply: Could he make the name shorter? longer? he could, but that would change and almost certainly weaken the effect which to me sounds as if he did not make the name longer than "Yorkshire Bastards". This is not the case. |

Point well made, Woubit. A classic case of not thinking from the puzzlers' perspective. I apologise and withdraw Sunshine Were his middle names Bank Employees Are? essentially, yes Was his loss connected to an overdraft? yes * SPOILER * After being charged 20 pounds for a 10 pounds overdraft, 30 year old Michael Howard of Leeds changed his name by deed poll to 'Yorkshire Bank Plc are Fascist Bastards.' The Bank has now asked him to close his account, and Mr Bastards has asked them to repay the 69p balance by cheque, made out in his new name. |
