As usual: you are in a dark room from which you need to escape. A voice from above says "Ethel". How will you respond? Note to old stagers: this is woubit's Christmas puzzle for 2007. Note to new stagers: if you look in the archive of solved puzzles in January 2006 for "Never did run smooth", you may obtain some notion of what to expect in woubit's Christmas puzzles. Note to everyone, including me: the very best of luck. |

ok, so it was from Chesterton's version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, written as a response to the banning of carolling... it was indeed Is the banning of carolling relevant? yes The song God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen? yope The Chief Constable has issued a statement declaring that carol singing in the streets by children is illegal, and morally and physically injurious. He appeals to the public to discourage the practice. Daily Paper God rest you merry gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay. The Herald Angels cannot sing - The cops arrest them on the wing, And warn them of the docketing Of anything they say. God rest you merry gentlemen, May nothing you dismay. On your reposeful cities lie Deep silence, broken only by The motor-horn's melodious cry, The hooter's happy bray. So, when the song of children ceased, And Herod was obeyed, In his high hall Corinthian With purple and with peacock fan, Rested that merry gentleman - And nothing him dismayed. |

It might help to attempt to identify this particular Ethel by asking the usual kinds of question. Alternatively (or additionally) you could make some attempt to explore your surroundings, even though as yet you can't actually see any of them. |

Right... voice that asked the question... H?A?M? Ethel... H?A?F? Well... if I were in the room, I would whip out my key ring that has an LED flashlight on it and peer around the room. Anything there? A light switch perhaps? The source of the ominous voice? Markings on the wall? A computer panel? Random stuff in the room? Random puzzle questions: Does this have anything to do with Sweden? The Swedish? Eight Spades and Stilton? The 12th day of Christmas? Did you ever figure out what the 12th answer would be? |

Artist? none of the above Is she known by a stage name ? pen name? neither She is a she isn't she? yes Right... voice that asked the question... H?A?M? it seemed to be all three, but... Ethel... H?A?F? all three Well... if I were in the room, I would whip out my key ring that has an LED flashlight on it and peer around the room. sadly, this helpful device has been removed from your person Anything there? A light switch perhaps? The source of the ominous voice? Markings on the wall? A computer panel? Random stuff in the room? I have not bumped into anything on my travels around the walls. The room appears to be circular with a radius of four of five metres, if that. Random puzzle questions: Does this have anything to do with Sweden? The Swedish? Eight Spades and Stilton? The 12th day of Christmas? with none of those Did you ever figure out what the 12th answer would be? I did, but as yet I will refrain from disclosing it, if you don't mind. You see, it may have a bearing on this puzzle. |

Weird Al - Ricky? neither of those, but never mind As to the puzzle as a whole... are "The 12 days of Christmas" relevant? no Are we going to wind up with weird replies like X Streakers streaking? if I told you where you would end up, there would be no puzzle involved in getting there. I will say, though, that for the moment I have been answering questions as the puzzle-setter, not as the person currently pent in durance vile. I will continue to do the former, but progressively less as you progress. |

"Look Ethel"? Feel around with your hands? I have done so. I seem to be in a bare circular cell with a single door. There is no furniture that I can discern "Don't look Ethel"? Close your eyes? it makes no appreciable difference to the amount I can see whether I close them or keep them open. "Are we expecting a streaker to run through?" we - and I include myself here - can never be quite sure what to expect in a woubit Christmas puzzle. However, there appears to be no sign of a streaker as yet. |

What do you think you're doing? I think I am standing in a dark cell wondering how to respond to the rather cryptic utterance "Ethel" Where you going? nowhere, at present I should say at this point that an examination of the lyrics of Ray Stevens's song The Streak will indeed aid you in your quest. But not, perhaps, in the way that you have so far been imagining. |

Cool lyrics. Am i the only person who has never heard that song before? I do not know, but the odds are against it It mentions fruit & veg so i'm going to shout "Brus(s)ells Sprouts" & "Carrot & Parsnip" at the top of my voice. interesting - there are indeed two "s"s in Brussels, but only one "l". Fortunately, the owner of the voice is not interested in orthography, nor vegetables, and nothing happens. Will that have any effect? no And i'll throw in Cauliflour & stewed apples as an encore? nothing continues to happen. However, you are in the right stanza... |

OK then... Frankincense... and myrrh? to offer have I? well, not quite, but close enough As you begin to sing the carol We Three Kings Of Orient Are, the room grows brighter. The reason for this is that a window opens high on a wall - far higher than you can reach - and the light of a single star illuminates your cell. As you have discovered, the cell is completely bare of furniture. Apart from the window, the only possible exit is a wooden door, which unfortunately is firmly locked. A single word is written on the door. At first, you believe it to be "Ethel", but on closer inspection it proves to be "Ezel". |

Who knows a carol about a donkey? I imagine many people know carols containing at least one donkey. However, although it is true that "ezel" is the Dutch word for "donkey", this will prove useless in the context of this puzzle. Try singing... "There's a song in the air". nothing happens |

...of Gibralter? Saint Peter? Mom? a literal rock? a figurative rock? Will all the answers have something to do with a song? A christmas carol? Is a song by Ezel Swang relevant? The center of stars (like the one we can see through the window) is theoretically a rock or diamond center... a song about a star? Try "We Three Kings"... particularly the "Star of wonder" portion... |

...of Gibralter? not that one, nor even the Rock of Gibraltar Saint Peter? no, but very good lateral thinking Mom? no, but very good filial thinking, especially at this time of year literal rock? well, think of synonyms for "rock"... a figurative rock? no, this one is hard Will all the answers have something to do with a song? that, as they say, is for me to know and you to find out A christmas carol? but just to be sociable, you won't need a carol to get you past this door Is a song by Ezel Swang relevant? no, but if any of his songs are any good, I'd be happy to incorporate them in the 2008 woubit Christmas puzzle The center of stars (like the one we can see through the window) is theoretically a rock or diamond center... a song about a star? Try "We Three Kings"... particularly the "Star of wonder" portion... as I sing "We Three Kings", the light from the window increases in intensity until it seems to burn with an almost royal beauty. The door, however, remains locked. |

I was always intrigued as to how the blarney stone managed to be part of the stone of Scone whilst being made out of completely different material... The blarney stone is made out of bluestone, which is a sort of grey-ish colour - is any of this relevant? It is also built into a really inaccessible place in the walls of a castle (presumably so the locals get to laugh at tourists who go through the various contortions needed to kiss it) is that relevant? |

I was always intrigued as to how the blarney stone managed to be part of the stone of Scone whilst being made out of completely different material... the chances are that it was not the Stone of Ezel either, but Christmas is no time to be casting doubt on legends The blarney stone is made out of bluestone, which is a sort of grey-ish colour - is any of this relevant? no It is also built into a really inaccessible place in the walls of a castle (presumably so the locals get to laugh at tourists who go through the various contortions needed to kiss it) is that relevant? not really - the idea is simply that the term "blarney" has passed into the language, and therefore occurs in song... |

sing Christmas In Killarney? an excellent suggestion. No sooner have I uttered the first lines of Christmas in Killarney than the door opens as if... well, as if it had always been open. I am at one end of a corridor. There is nothing much to do but walk to the other end, so I do that. Or at least I try, but as I reach the halfway point, I rebound from what appears to be an invisible force field. No matter how I struggle, I cannot breach the field, and I am about to give up in despair when a voice says: Ye cannae change the laws of physics. |

Can I try trolling a few lines from Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer? an excellent notion. If as you do so you also try walking to the end of the corridor, you will find your path no longer obstructed by the force field. (This, as Tsoram has divined, is because Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer was the creation of Robert L May, an employee of the American retailer Montgomery Ward. I apologise for the obscurity of some of these clues, but the power of Google allied to the power of the brains on the LTPF means that I need to create a formidable challenge for you all to overcome.) Any of these by James Montgomery? "Angels from the Realms of Glory?" "Hail To the Lord's Anointed?" "Come to Calvary's Holy Mountain?" "Go to Dark Gethsemane?" "Prayer is the Souls' Sincere Desire?" "In the Hour of Trial?" "Lift Up Your Heads?" "Ye Gates of Brass?" "For Ever with the Lord?" none of them, I fear, but do not worry, for help has arrived. At the end of the corridor is a junction - a meeting of four paths (including the one leading back to your cell). In the centre of the junction is the obligatory dwarf whose appearance in all lateral adventures is required by a statute of Pepin the Short. "Where do these paths lead?" you ask him, wondering if he's going to be one of those people you meet in puzzles who can only say "Yes" or "No" and who may or may not tell the truth. But he seems chatty enough. "One of them is on the way out of here", he says. "Another leads back to your cell, but you already knew that. The third leads to a pit filled with venomous snakes, and the fourth to something even worse - a discotheque." "Which one is which?" you enquire, with no great optimism. Sure enough, the dwarf points to the path to your left and says "Not John's advice." He points to the path ahead of you and says "Not Percy's bird." Finally, he indicates the path to your right with the cryptic utterance "Not James's tremor." He will say no more. Which path will you choose? |

Could Percy's bird be a Cockerel? Percy having been Hotspur, and the emblem of Tottenham Hotspur being a Cockerel? it could indeed - a very fine piece of thinking. But judging by the broad grin on the face of the dwarf when I put Woodworm's suggestion to him, I am more inclined to believe that the Percy in question was Percival Bysshe Shelley, and the bird in question is a skylark. |

Should we be considering Henry James? James as in the group? James I? or II of Great Britain? any of the other five James of Scotland? King James Bible? St James? none of these, but to assist you in your search, you are looking for a human adult male and entirely fictitious James |

John was a writer, and also an actor and director Banking/financial/real estate? Clerical/Administrative? Computer related / Hardware ? Construction / Craftsman ? Education / Academic Research ? Entertainment / Media ? Executive / Management ? Hospitality / Travel ? James may be said to have been a traveller, certainly Legal Services ? Manufacturing / Distributions ? James was also involved in transportation, in more senses than one Food Service ? Sports? Entertainment? see above for John. Not John's advice - look forward in anger? look forward in happiness? or do I need to know something about the play? nothing except its title Not James's tremor - so could this be written as not captain kirks tremor? well, you need a synonym for "tremor" is the relevant thing about Kirk his name? yes being a captain? the enterprise? another crew member? and nothing else Don't Look Back In Anger: this must be another Noel: Mr Gallagher? this elicits a round of applause from the dwarf, so you can be sure that you have now identified the Noel Gallagher path A name that links the Tremor Brothers with James T Kirk is someone called Chris Pine, who apparently played both (the joys of Google!). Are we on the trail of the lonesome pine? A Christmas tree? Or have I shimmied up yet another eucalyptus? you need a different Kirk.. well as we have a Noel Gallagher and Coward paths, would the last be Noel Edmonds? it would indeed - a much more lateral approach than looking for... tremor = shake? shaking? ... Shaking Kirk Houston, an alias briefly adopted by the DJ and TV presenter Noel Edmonds earthquake? quiver? shiver? seizure? convulsion? You now have three paths from which to choose (unless of course you'd rather just go back to your cell). The path to the left is named after Noel Gallagher (of the band Oasis and author of Don't Look Back In Anger, not the advice given by John Osborne). The path ahead of you is named after Noel Coward (author of Blithe Spirit, not the bird so described by Percy Shelley). The path to your right is named after Noel Edmonds (otherwise known as Shaking Kirk Houston, who was not James T. Kirk with a tremor). Choose wisely. |

Is it an actual Oasis song/lyric which mentions christmas or perhaps provides a link to a christmas song by a different artist? Oasis had a song called "D'yer wanna be a spaceman" which would provide a tenuous link to Chris De Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling" If i were to choose the Noel Edmunds path and it was the wrong one could i swop it? |

Is it an actual Oasis song/lyric which mentions christmas or perhaps provides a link to a christmas song by a different artist? no - no further knowledge of the oeuvre of Oasis (or Coward or Osborne or Shelley or anyone else) is required Oasis had a song called "D'yer wanna be a spaceman" which would provide a tenuous link to Chris De Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling" it might indeed, but this will not avail. You need do nothing particularly complex here - you have three Noels from which to choose... If i were to choose the Noel Edmunds path and it was the wrong one could i swop it? it might depend on your resistance to snake venom. But if it leads to the discotheque, you will have no chance at all of escaping alive. |

On the basis of the First Noel - Noel Coward's path? brilliantly done - of the three you had to choose from, Coward was indeed The First Noel simply in terms of his date of birth. You follow the path ahead of you. It leads neither to a snake pit nor a discotheque, but after a while you hear ghastly noises (though not as ghastly as the ones you would have heard had you followed the Noel Gallagher path). Jaws snap, wings beat, high-pitched screams fill the air... Rounding a corner, you see the source of the cacophony. Two giant cockroaches are engaged in a battle to the death. They seem oblivious to your presence, but they are completely blocking the corridor, and you dare not venture closer lest you become embroiled in the conflict with dire consequences for you. Music, it is said, hath charms to soothe the savage breast. Perhaps, if you can think of something to sing... |

Having found that cockroaches is a nickname for people from New South Wales (especially their Rugby league team) should we try a few lines from Six White boomers? you try those, but the cockroaches show no sign of giving up their struggle If that doesn't work then "two little boys" might. this, on the other hand, causes the giant insects to pause briefly and turn to face you. Unfortunately, they do not show any inclination to allow you to pass - instead, though the face of a giant cockroach is generally an inscrutable thing, you have the distinct impression that tearing you limb from limb is not far from uppermost in their thoughts. And if you'd ever heard "Two Little Boys", you could understand why. |

Rolf Harris and Noel Edmonds on the same day? That's just cruel. I vaguely remember once watching a postmodern arty film called 'Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life' (geddit?), in which various neighbours brought Christmas gifts to cheer up a giant cockroach. Am getting slightly hysterical at this stage. How about "We'll be ill for Christmas"? I sincerely hope you weren't. Again, it might be an idea to reflect on what the bugs blocking your path are actually doing. I don't suppose if I played them a round of Engelbert Humperwhatsit dinck, and a more apt choice it would be hard to imagine singing "Release Me", they'd let us go? No, thought not. you thought correctly, but after an earlier rendition of "Two Little Boys", these bugs seem now to regard you as merely an irritant, and disinclined to mete out condign punishment for singing "Please Release Me". Perhaps they need to hear a bit about "Kung Fu Fighting" from Carl Douglas? No? Okay. No is right. Okay is wrong. But think about fighting... As they are having a battle I suppose it's not quite an "Ugly Bug Ball"? Thought not. A battle is not a ball, although the difference is sometimes hard to appreciate. A battle, or a fight, or a struggle, might however also be described as a... Any music by Buggles relevant? no more than it ever was, which is to say not at all Are these cockroaches "Super Bugs"? Bugs in the system? no, they are perfectly ordinary bugs, if a bit on the large side, but I blame the junk food advertisements to which they were subjected as buglets. |

Punching, Nipping? karate, some sort of marshal arts? not a specific form of fighting - just another word for a fight, or a quarrel, or an argument, or a dispute... incidentally, "martial arts" include karate; "marshal arts" are limited only to gunfights at the OK Corral Ding Dong Merrily on High? absolutely brilliant, and I wish it were the right answer |

battle? brawl? war? scuffle? duel? row? none of these, nor yet Sunshine's wonderful "ding-dong". "Scuffle" is closest, both in terms of the magnitude of the quarrel and in terms of sounding like the word you seek. |

cafuffle? not sure about the spelling cafuffle, gefuffle, kerfuffle and the like are all fine as far as the clever men at Oxford are concerned. But this isn't a cafuffle. For this, you need muscle... |

brawl? not close wrestle? much closer, but the vowel sound in "scuffle" was the right one. Again, apologies for obscurity, but I cannot tell in advance what will be obscure and what will not. |

Hmm.. "A tussle between a pair of bugs" eh? wild speculations .. Anagrams of "pair bugs tussle" include, "Bluegrass Situp". Maybe that could get the cockroaches doing aerobics to some banjo, and also "Upstairs Bugles" but maybe that'll sound a bit harsh. "Bug Tussle" is the name of a small town in Texas but that's probably an improbable coincidence? These two bugs, do they refer to two persons? |

"Bug Tussle" is the name of a small town in Texas but that's probably an improbable coincidence? ...on the contrary - all you need to do is identify the most famous residents of Bug Tussle, and you will (almost) be on your way These two bugs, do they refer to two persons? no, they refer to two bugs Bug tussle bug appears to be some kind of software for tracking computer bugs. I don't know where I got Texas from but there is a Bugtussle in Oklahoma and a Bug Tussle in Kentucky according to Google. The only other famous name I can find is that of a real person: Carl Albert (politician and contemporary of John F Kennedy) |

I reckon we need help from fellow puzzlers here - not sure where to go. But some ideas... Music associated with The Beverly Hill Billies: "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (and stragely enough its Bluegrass) "Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies" is a song by "Weird Al" Yankovic. It is a parody of "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits and The Beverly Hillbillies theme song. There are a whole lot of individuals in Clampett family and the Drysdales were their neighbours. Do we need to look elsewhere for the correct thread? |

The Hillbillies themselves are not relevant - all that matters is their new address once they moved from Bug Tussle. |

One Beverley Knight, doubtless a name in everyone else's vocabulary, appears to have been involved in a 2004 re-recording of Do They Know It's Christmas.... How do the cockroaches feel about that? |

How do the cockroaches feel about that? disinclined to allow you to progress further, I am afraid - but insofar as a cockroach is capable of being impressed by a piece of thinking, these ones appear impressed |

Don't suppose they're moved by the knowledge that the Beverley Sisters sang the song Sisters from White Christmas? No, I thought not! you thought correctly, but help has arrived... Try White Christmas (I've never seen such a day/ In Beverly Hills, LA)? a splendid notion. As you begin your best Bing impersonation, the cockroaches cease their strife and listen enraptured. This allows you not only to pass them, but to reach the end of the passage. A small door is set in the wall of the castle. You expect this to be locked, but to your amazement it opens easily as you turn the handle. A narrow path leads away from the castle to... well, to wherever you want it to go. Woodworm...I'm impressed with your knowledge of Christmas songs! Few enough people know that first verse! I have been impressed, as always, with the knowledge, the capacity for research and the imagination of the LTPF. Christmas and the Epiphany are behind us now, so thank you all for taking part, and ***** SPOILER ***** |

Shucks - I was hoping the door would be locked! I don't usually enjoy 'googlish' puzzles but this one had me hooked and made a holiday period much more fun than it would otherwise have been. Thanks for all your efforts - and patience! |
