I opened the door and I understood right away that, most probably, I would not run into anyone. A possible quickie... |

You said that you didn't see the display of the elevator. Is it because that elevator doesn't have such a thing? because it was missing at that time? because you couldn't see at all? Because something was blocking your view? Because you couldn't see it from where you were standing? Relevant that you didn't call the elevator even if you had the intention to use it? was it already at your floor? |

Hmm... something was blocking your view, but it was not an object or a living thing... can it be something related to the weather? Can you look outside through an open space or a window when you open the door from your flat? A lightning? Pouring rain? Reflection from the sun? |

Hmm... something was blocking your view, but it was not an object or a living thing... can it be something related to the weather? No, it is actually much simpler. The fact that I could not see the elevator, however, is not relevant to the puzzle. Can you look outside through an open space or a window when you open the door from your flat? No, and THIS is relevant. A lightning? Pouring rain? Reflection from the sun? These are irrelevant. |

OK. What are the implications of this? Did you reckon nobody would go out of their flats because they were afraid of being mugged? Afraid of not finding their way out? Afraid of stumbling? Was it dark all over, or only in the area around your flat? Anything else we should explore? |

OK. What are the implications of this? Did you reckon nobody would go out of their flats because they were afraid of being mugged? Afraid of not finding their way out? Afraid of stumbling? No to all these. Was it dark all over, or only in the area around your flat? All the corridor was dark. Anything else we should explore? Yes. |

The relevant light source: was it the only one? a lamp? a light bulb? behind the door of someone? a light switch? an electric device? something you had with you? Is the elevator relevant at all? if you had planned to use the stairs would this have changed anything? |

The relevant light source: was it the only one? Yes. a lamp? a light bulb? This one, a few of them. behind the door of someone? No. a light switch? That's not a light source. Or do you mean something else? an electric device? something you had with you? No to rest. Is the elevator relevant at all? Yes. if you had planned to use the stairs would this have changed anything? No. |

Well, a light switch can be a light source helping you to find it in the dark. But this doesn't seem to be relevant. Has more to be found out about the light source? Where it was? Was it burning when you stepped out your apartment? did you switch it on? or off? Is it relevant how far you had to walk to the elevator? Did you realise that you wouldn't run into anyone: immediately when you stepped out your apartment? after closing your door? when you saw the light? when you were at the elevator? |

Well, a light switch can be a light source helping you to find it in the dark. I thought this was what you meant, but I did not want to give away anything. Yes, a luminous light switch IS relevant. But this doesn't seem to be relevant. Yes it is :-) Has more to be found out about the light source? Yes. Where it was? No, not this. Was it burning when you stepped out your apartment? Fortunately not. did you switch it on? This one, but it's irrelevant. or off? Is it relevant how far you had to walk to the elevator? No. Did you realise that you wouldn't run into anyone: immediately when you stepped out your apartment? Yes. after closing your door? No. when you saw the light? There was no light. when you were at the elevator? No. |

Just to clarify: When you stepped out of your appartment: the luminous light switch did not produce any light? because the lighting of the corridor was on? because something was broken? Was it a light switch for the lighting of the corridor? Was the light working with an interval timer? relevant? It was the luminous light switch that made you realise that you wouldn't run into anyone? and not the lighting of the corridor? Is anything more about the light switch relevant? |

Just to clarify: When you stepped out of your appartment: the luminous light switch did not produce any light? You're right, I have been a bit sloppy with my reply. It was not totally dark in the corridor, for two reasons: 1. because of the light coming from the switch, but most importantly 2. because of the light coming from my apartment. I must say I did not think of the tiny light switch as a light source. because the lighting of the corridor was on? No, the lighting in the corridor was off. because something was broken? No. Was it a light switch for the lighting of the corridor? Yes. Was the light working with an interval timer? Yes! relevant? Very! It was the luminous light switch that made you realise that you wouldn't run into anyone? No. and not the lighting of the corridor? It was the lighting, or rather the lack thereof. Is anything more about the light switch relevant? No, you have got pretty much everything now. If no-one $poils within a day or two, I will. |

All right. So because there is a timer for the switch, and the lights in the corridor were off, you knew that no one was on their way, at least to your floor, since they would already have pushed the light switch when they either entered the building, or left their apartment. Is this it? |

So because there is a timer for the switch, and the lights in the corridor were off, you knew that no one was on their way, at least to your floor, since they would already have pushed the light switch when they either entered the building, or left their apartment. Is this it? Almost. There is no need to push the light switch at the ground floor because the hall is well illuminated. However, the light go on automatically when you use the elevator; if you push floor 6, the lights on floor 6 will be on when you exit the elevator. Since the lights were off, I knew no-one was on their way to my floor. Thanks everyone for following this through! *************** SPOILER *************** |
