Marie started smoking for the first time, even though no-one she knew smoked, and she was fully aware of the dangers of smoking. Why? |

Does she actually want the baby? Does she genuinely care for the baby's welfare? Does she wish the baby harm in some way? Or: is she trying to prove a political point (eg an employee of a tobacco lobbying firm might conceivably smoke during pregnancy to 'prove' that Govt advice on smoking during pregnancy is unfounded)? Yes she heard something somewhere? Or could be this a doctor gave her an advice? A doctor would be very unlikely to give this advice, I would assume someone else gave her an advice? No she misunderstood something? Not really, though most people who read the thing wouldn't have started smoking she misinterpreted something? See answer above she made up something? No Will there actually be a benefit for the child? Quite possibly, although the risks of smoking while pregnant would probably outweight this Will there be an assumed benefit for the child during his or her whole life? at a particular age? Was the idea to start and quit smoking before the pregnancy brought up by what she read? or did she conclude this after reading? Is it relevant where she read this: a journal? a magazine? a professional journal? Did she think her child would be happier by doing this? to have a relevant character trait? Is this her first child? relevant? suppose she had another child later will she do the same? Is the father of the child relevant? Was the idea to start and quit smoking before the pregnancy brought up by what she read? or did she conclude this after reading? The thing she read didn't actually advise starting and quitting, she decided that herself from what it said Is it relevant where she read this: a journal? a magazine? a professional journal? Well I read the thing in a magazine, so we'll say that, but not relevant Did she think her child would be happier by doing this? Yes to have a relevant character trait? Yes Is this her first child? Irrel relevant? suppose she had another child later will she do the same? Possibly, though she might realise that it's not as good an idea as she thought it would be Is the father of the child relevant? No Would this work if she was a surrogate mother but not the biological one of the child? I think yes, if she was to be the one looking after the child after birth Would the "positive" effect be there if she had used a different type of nicotine? like snuff? or nicotine gum? or patches? As far as I know it would probably work with any form of the drug |

So the relevant thing about smoking is the nicotine? Yes Which characteristics of nicotine are relevant: it can create addiction? This it is a poison? it is a stimulant? it can also create relaxation? impact on the blood circuit? on the brain? psychological impact? I must admit that I don't know enough about the drug to know. The thing I read stated that the toxins in the smoke had an effect on the foetus, I'm afraid I don't know more specifically than that. Apart from starting and quitting smoking does she do anything relevant? does she do anything with the child? Hard to answer...she will behave differently, but there is not a specifc thing that she will do Will a particular part of the childs body be impacted? a particular system (blood system, nervous system, ...)? No to both Is a particular character trait of the child to be found out? Yes apart from happiness? The relevant character trait will lead to a more general sense of happiness Is the title of the puzzle relevant (apart from the reference to smoke)? No Is the song relevant? No |

The effect we're looking for, is it connected to the known, harmful effects of nicotine? or is it something totally different, that not many people will know about? The effect works in two ways. One is connected to the harmful effects and one is not. I think I will post a recap, as much as for me as for you, since I'm kind of getting bogged down and unsure how to answer questions. ***RECAP/HINT*** Marie read an article in a magazine about a new discovery. The article stated that babies whose mothers gave up smoking when they fell pregnant were more ____________ (character trait leading to increased happiness) than both babies whose mothers smoked heavily and those whose mothers were non-smokers. This was because the toxins in the smoke affected the baby, and also because ____________ (reason relating to a harmful effect of nicotine). Because of this, Marie thought it would be a good idea to start smoking while she tried for a baby and then give up when she fell pregnant. All you need to do now is fill in the blanks :-) |

OK, I'm just going to spoil this one now...the basic facts have all been guessed and there doesn't seem to be any interest. Plus I've lost the original magazine article and I'll forget the details soon. ***** SPOILER ***** I read in a magazine that scientists have made a new discovery regarding smoking during pregnancy. Apparently, women who give up smoking during pregnancy are more likely than both non-smokers and women who continue smoking to have babies who are relaxed, happy and willing to try new things. It is believed that this is because the toxins in the cigarettes have an effect on the foetus, and also that the act of giving up triggers maternal instincts in the mother. Theoretically, a woman reading this could decide to start and then stop smoking in the hopes of producing a more relaxed baby. Thanks for playing, I'm sorry it got a bit bogged down in the details! |
