It is cold and their is snow on the ground. A man is out following someone else's tracks in the snow. He comes to a river. It is frozen over, the tracks go across the ice. However when the man tries to follow across the ice he breaks through the ice and drowns. Why? |

Did he weigh more than who he was pursuing? Is it relevant how much time had passed between one going over the ice and the other? Was his footware relevant? Were the tracks made by a human? |

Oh, just thought... Was the man walking? If not, was he is a car or something that was too heavy? |

Just to get these things out of the way: - Did the ice thaw during the time between the first man and the second man passed it? - Was the thickness of the ice layer more or less identical in both cases? - Was the ice cracked or damaged before the second man crossed it? |

So the man knew he was being followed? Did he create the illusion of having crossed at that point by somehow creating his footprint tracks without actually walking over the ice? Did the first man employ any tool or animal to cross the river? Just to clarify further : for all mentions of tracks in the puzzle statement can we substitute footprints? |

You got close enough Peter so here is the... *********SPOILER*********** Well that was a fast puzzle. Here is what happened. Man #1 was an escaped prisoner. He was aware that the police were after him and would easily be able to follow his tracks in the snow. So when he came to the river which was frozen over and had snow coating it. He knew that ice coated in snow melts. Thus he could not cross. So using a poll he made what appeared to be tracks across the ice. When the police man came he attempted to cross the ice which in its weakened state broke. |
