If they could have spoken, they might have said "I'm doing science and I'm still alive. And when you're dying I'll be still alive. And when you're dead I will be still alive. Still alive. Still alive."

Are they really alive? Yes.

Jonathan Coulton relevant? No.

Can they not be seen by the naked eye b/c they are too small? Or very far away? Transparent? Not part of the visible spectrum, like radio waves? Too dark? Black holes?
Are they from the planet earth? Aliens from outer space?

Do they consist of single cells? Multiple cells?
If not, are they typically found inside of a cell?

By the fact that they are "alive", do you mean that they truly are able to reproduce by themselves?

Oh, and after typing that I thought of several possible answers. Before I just throw them out there, let me try to narrow it down with some questions (if all "no", that excludes all my guesses):

Are they a type of human cells? cancer cells? Did a well-known law passed during the Bush pertain to them?

That last line should read "Bush administration". Something happened there.

By the fact that they are "alive", do you mean that they truly are able to reproduce by themselves? As much as any other living thing is.

HeLa cells? some other immortalized cell line?

(now we're getting into stuff probably few non-biologists know about, so if this is the right line of inquiry I'll just try to get to the $po1ler as quickly as possible)

HeLa cells? You got it! some other immortalized cell line?

(now we're getting into stuff probably few non-biologists know about, so if this is the right line of inquiry I'll just try to get to the $po1ler as quickly as possible)

*****SPOILER*****
HeLa cells began in a biopsy of the cervical cancer of Henrietta Lacks, who died in 1951. Unlike most normal cells, cancer cells produce the enzyme telomerase, which allows DNA replication and hence cell division to continue indefinitely, so that if they have access to food, the cells can effectively be immortal. (Hence "And when you're [Henrietta Lacks] dying I'll be still alive, and when you're dead I will be still alive.")

HeLa cells are used to this day in cancer research (hence "I'm doing science and I'm still alive.") Even for cancer cells, they are exceptionally prolific, and have often taken over other cell cultures in the same laboratory, to the point that, according to Wikipedia, "It has been demonstrated that a substantial fraction of in vitro cell lines—approximately 10%, maybe 20%, are actually HeLa cells, because the original cells in the cell culture have been overwhelmed by a rapidly growing population derived from HeLa contaminant cells."

Thanks for playing! I'll have another puzzle up soonish. Also, let me make an advertisement for DoctaPeppa's puzzle "Propaganda Never Fails" -- if I can solve it, I'm sure one of you can.
