One only needed to glance at the headline to know that the writer had a scrund. |

Was the scrund related to: Theft of the thing? How the thing looks like? What the thing means? This one. A rumor about the thing? Do people usually get mistaken like the writer? Many people do, although many people also know what the thing really is. Do only some? This is closest. Barely anyone? Or high chance only him? I should probably clarify something: The goal of the puzzle is to figure out what the headline was that contained the scrund. Once you've figured out the headline, the scrund should be self-explanitory. |

Did the author know the item in question was a knife? NO! Did he refer to a knife as something else? By implication, yes. Did he refer to something else as a knife? No. Did he make any false assumptions? That's virtually the definition of a scrund. Would the type of knife be useful for cutting: Rope/Cables? Wires? Wood/vegetation? People? Probably any of these, but this in particular. We've already established that the knife was a weapon. Food? Something else? Would the headline read significantly different if the writer had not had a scrund? No, only one word would be different. Would everyone be able to tell that the writer had a scrund based on the headline? Or just those who did not share the scrund? This one. Perhaps there would have been clues in the rest of the article, but the only people who could tell from the headline would be the people who didn't share the scrund. Or maybe the people who actually knew what had happened? No, anyone who knew what the word the writer misused actually meant would have been able to recognize the scrund IMMEDIATELY. |

Was the writer of the headline the same person as the writer of the article? If so, did (s)he make a similar mistake(s) in the rest of the article? Was the headline something like [Person] attacks [person] with [Weapon]? Was the headline one of those headlines that occurs when idiotic journalists try to be funny (e.g., Man Makes Rocket With Diet Coke and Mentos, Spectators Have Blast)? Did the writer confuse the type knife with a different weapon (e.g., in the version of Romeo and Juliet with Leondardo de Caprio they refer to their guns as "Swords" [with Sword being a brand name])? Did the writer think the action occurred with a non-weapon object (e.g., a fish, a box of frozen peas)? |

Did the title read something along the lines of... "Man found shot" instead of "Man found stabbed"? Or perhaps... YES! "Man shot to death" instead of "Man stabbed to death" Similar? Similar, but the headline did not specify whether the victim died or not. Did the headline at all imply that somebody had been injured/killed by the weapon? It certainly suggested/implied one of the two, although it's not clear which (and not relevant to the puzzle.) "[Noun][verb][knife]"? "[Noun][verb][scrund/euphemism for knife]"? Neither of these. HINT: The word "knife" was not in the headline at all. |

I am not altogether sure about this. It is in the nature of newspaper headlines that ambiguity can easily creep in, and that might be what has happened here. "Man Shoots Neighbor With Machete" could well mean that the neighbor had the machete, and the man shot him for fear that the machete would otherwise be used by the neighbor upon the man, with detrimental consequences. I have posted my favourite (authentic) newspaper headline on this forum before, but it bears repeating as an example of the kind of ambiguity I mean: Incest More Common Than Thought In United States |
