Is the igloo a tent? Are they in the wilderness? Is the cause of death the same for both? Is it one of the following: ...suffocation? ...bleeding? ...poisoning? ...electrocution? ...wounds? ...drowning? Would the puzzle work with one dead man? Three? Are the men real? Human (a bit redundant, I know)? Adult? Male? |

Vagary's situation seems most likely, but just for the sake of thoroughness... Assuming that the vapors displaced the oxygen and asphyxiated them, were they in a tent? The cabin of a boat? |

Did they decide to start huffing the vapor in a moronic attempt to get high? Did the vapor attract unwanted attention from wildlife? Could the dry ice somehow affect buoyancy? |

Erinye: Did they decide to start huffing the vapor in a moronic attempt to get high? Nope Did the vapor attract unwanted attention from wildlife? No Could the dry ice somehow affect buoyancy? Nope HINT: We have already determined that the men died of asphyxiation from dry ice in an Igloo brand cooler. Now just determine where they were, why they had the cooler, and why they suffocated. |

***********************SPOILER******************************* ***********************SPOILER******************************* The men have gone spelunking and have taken an Igloo brand cooler with them so they can have a picnic down in the caves. They cleverly used dry ice to keep their beer cold, not realizing that as the dry ice sublimed (went from solid state to vapor state) it would push the lighter oxygen out of the cave and they would suffocate. Excellent work to all who participated! |

Too clever for their own good. Could this actually happen, though, with the limited amount of dry ice they'd be using? Sounds like a job for the MythBusters. |

I believe it would depend on how much dry ice they had, how much they were breathing, and how small the cave was. To quote Wikipedia,
quote:Dry ice sublimates into large quantities of carbon dioxide gas, which could displace oxygen-containing air and pose a danger of asphyxiation. Thus, it should only be exposed to open air in a well-ventilated environment.

Oh, and by the way, they were in a pit cave. The pit caves can be pretty narrow and fairly deep, and the denser carbon dioxide would generally sink down to the bottom where the men were. |
