Are tollbooths relevant? Roads? Railroad crossings? Albatrosses?

Was the gate keeping the man out? Keeping the man in? Keeping something else out? Keeping something else in?

I don't think there's an LTPF cause of death list, but with the frequency of death in these puzzles, there really should be. So did the man die by...

Poison?
Blood loss?
Physical (not chemical, as with poison) organ damage?
Suffocation?
Infection?
Heart attack/failure?
Decapitation?
Electrocution?
Suicide?
Murder?

We've already established that the gate was not keeping an animal in.

Was the gate keeping a machine in?
Was the gate keeping water in? Was a dam involved?
Did the man intend to open the gate?
Did whatever the gate was keeping in directly cause the man's death?

Did he commit seppuku, opening the gate that was his midsection (using a sharp, clean tool, for safety's sake) and allowing the warm and slimy innards to spew forth? Is that how he died?

Did he open a wrought-iron rusted gate, cut his finger, get tetanus and die?

Did opening the gate cause him to lose his balance and fall from something?
A ladder, perhaps?

Was he doing some sort of leisure activity when this happened?

I think "something" referred to the thing the gate was keeping in.

Is the man a pilot? Did he die by plane crash?

Is skydiving or a similar sport relevant? Sky diving is not relevant, nor is another other sport in which one parachutes.

About what distance did the man (who stunningly is still unnamed...let's say Joe) fall? Less than 10 feet? 30 feet? 50 feet? 100 feet? 1000 feet? 10000 feet? More than that?

Was Joe in an airplane at any time during the events of the puzzle?

Are high-rise buildings relevant? Mountains? Volcanoes?

Was Joe in an airplane at any time during the events of the puzzle? No

Are high-rise buildings relevant? No Mountains? Yes Volcanoes? Whether or not volcanoes are relevant is irrelevant, if that makes any sense.

29,029 ft? That's the height of Mt. Everest, isn't it? Was he trying to climb Mt. Everest? And somehow he fell? Did something go wrong with his climbing gear/equipment?

Actually, Peppa, people have fallen at terminal velocity and lived -- though usually this involves them falling into trees.

I think Rcs has it, except that whether it's Everest or not is probably irrelevant -- it's just that Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, so he couldn't have fallen from higher than that. So -- did Joe open the thing (I don't know the word for it) that kept a rope supporting him attached to the face he was climbing? Then fail to reattach it where he wanted to put it and fall to his death?

Actually, Peppa, people have fallen at terminal velocity and lived -- though usually this involves them falling into trees. Well, not this guy.

I think Rcs has it, except that whether it's Everest or not is probably irrelevant -- it's just that Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, so he couldn't have fallen from higher than that. That works. So -- did Joe open the thing (I don't know the word for it) that kept a rope supporting him attached to the face he was climbing? I don't know. Then fail to reattach it where he wanted to put it and fall to his death? I don't know.

******************SPOILER*****************

The man was rock climbing. The gate (the moving barrier on a hinge) on the carabiner that was holding whatever it was holding opened, and he fell.
