Did this occur while using a voicemail system? If so, was it the kind where you type numbers using the keypad? Or one with speech recognition where you speak commands? |

Did you say "I want Julie Smith. Smith. Smith, Julie. Julie Smith. I'm trying to be FRANK here! SMITH! - or something similar this is an ingenious guess but not the right answer i'm afraid. You're not a million miles away in that frustration on my part plays a big part in this puzzle. |

Interesting. Just to be certain, you were giving a voice command to your phone trying to get it to call your wife? Or trying to get messages from your wife? Did you say "Frank Smith" at any point? Did you say your wife's name? Did you say another name that Frank goes by, or that the system would recognize as him? THe name of a business? |

Would it help to know your wife's name? Did the robotic operator mistake it for Frank Smith? Is something other than their names relevant? For example, were you asking for a specific department? (When I call my dad at work I ask for Engineering, for example.) |

Would it help to know your wife's name? it will help you set the scene . Her name is Sheila Hallihan Did the robotic operator mistake it for Frank Smith? no but it did mistake it for another name ...explore this Is something other than their names relevant? no For example, were you asking for a specific department? (When I call my dad at work I ask for Engineering, for example.)nothing like this. Sheila works for the same Bank as I do but she is a customer manager. She works on a team of about 20 people managing about 4000 accounts. Frank Smith also works on the team |

Did you know, as soon as the robot said it was connecting you to Frank, why it had made the mistake? Or was it something you had to puzzle out? Did you say her full name in the form you've given us? Did the robot mistake 'Sheila Hallihan' for Frank's job title? Did you say anything relevant apart from 'Sheila Hallihan'? For instance, 'can you get me' or 'can I speak to'? Were you eating crisps at the time? Would this puzzle work if her name were Hanrahan? Hoolihan? Goolagong? Or if Frank's name were Jones? Or Wilkinson? |

So the system refused to put your call through to your wife and in a fit of anger you used a four-letter word? Did you say something along the lines of "Sheila Hallihan, for ****'s sake!"? |

Arek Fu So the system refused to put your call through to your wife and in a fit of anger you used a four-letter word? yes Did you say something along the lines of "Sheila Hallihan, for ****'s sake!"? almost perfect and good enough for a ***************spoiler***************** Here's the transcript of the two calls that I tried to place to my wife on our company's super deluxe new voice recognition phone system which as you'll see seems only able to recognise the initials of the person you're looking to speak to. Call 1 : Phone System : "Welcome to the customer management team please state clearly the name of the person you wish to speak to" Me : "Sheila Hallihan" Phone System : "Putting you through to Sharon Hogan is this correct" Me : No Phone System : Please restate the name of the person you wish to speak to" Me : Slightly louder "SHEILA HALLIHAN" Phone System : "Putting you through to Seamus Hanley is this correct" Me: "No" Phone system : "We are unable to connect your call at this time" Me : Hangs up in disgust. Redials number while moaning about so called technological advancements. Call No 2: Phone System : "Welcome to the customer management team please state clearly the name of the person you wish to speak to" Me : Very slowly and loudly "SHEILA HALLIHAN" Phone System : "Putting you through to Sharon Hogan is this correct" Me Starting to lose my temper : "F**K's sake" Phone System "Putting you through to Frank Smith is this correct" Me : Probably best left to your imagination. Thanks to all who played some amusing guesses there at the end. There's nothing like a bit of profanity to get the questions flowing. Well done Arek for the score and Woodworm for the assist |
