Sorry -- I've seen them here before and I assumed the concept was known. Imagine you're a customs officer, and it's your job to pass or deny someone at the airport according to certain arcane rules. For example, if Frank wanted to pass me to take an egg to Delaware, I'd let him by. If he wanted to take a frankfurter to Georgia, I'd stop him. What rule am I using to decide whether he can take his item or not? |

Can Ethan take a book to Azerbaijan? Can Frank take an egg to Denmark? Can Greg take a golf club to Ireland? Can Henry take a test tube to Greenland? Can Isabel take a poster to Germany? Can Shawn take a soda to Soviet Georgia? No to rest. |

can anyone take an egg anywhere? Can John take an egg to Sierra Leone? Politics relevant? Can an egg be taken anywhere outside of Asia? Does the kind of egg matter? Does the name of the person taking the egg matter? |

can anyone take an egg anywhere? It's theoretically possible, but highly unlikely. Can John take an egg to Sierra Leone? No. Politics relevant? No. Can an egg be taken anywhere outside of Asia? Depends. Does the kind of egg matter? It could. Does the name of the person taking the egg matter? Yep. |

So the sentences break down into: [name] is taking [thing] to [place]. Can the rule be expressed in terms of just the letters in the name, thing, and place? In other words, could you answer a statement like "Zytherzeer is taking wakalixes to Delta Gravitar Prime" where none of the words have any definition or usage? |

So the sentences break down into: [name] is taking [thing] to [place]. Correct. Can the rule be expressed in terms of just the letters in the name, thing, and place? In other words, could you answer a statement like "Zytherzeer is taking wakalixes to Delta Gravitar Prime" where none of the words have any definition or usage? Technically, yes. However, this example would be entirely incorrect. Are vowels relevant in any other manner? Consonants? Number of letters in either of the names? Alphabetical order? Why don't you experiment and find out? As an example, Frank can take flapjacks to Essex, but not Wessex. He could not take bicycles, airguns, or telephones to Essex. John could not take anything anywhere. |

When you say that [insert name here] can't go/take [thing x] anywhere, do you mean that: 1. He or she cannot go/take [thing x] to a place named "Anywhere"? 2. There exists no location to which he or she cannot go/take thing [x]. 3. He or she can go/take [thing x] to at least one location, but only that/those location(s) (as opposed to being able to go/take [thing x] anywhere). If someone can't go anywhere, can he or she go somewhere? Can he or she go nowhere? |

When I intend to say specifically that there is no valid location, I will say he "can't go anywhere." This also applies to what is taken along -- if nothing can validly be taken, I will say he "can't take anything." There will always be a valid name, regardless of other circumstances. (As a hint, "007" is NOT a valid name under ANY circumstances. If someone can't go anywhere, can he or she go somewhere? Possibly. Can he or she go nowhere? Possibly. |

Oh, could Chad Ocho Cinco take his Cincinnati Bengals football jersey to the Dawg Pound at Cleveland Browns Stadium? If he were to change his name back to Chad Johnson, would he be able to do so? (Note: Chad Ocho Cinco is a Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver in the NFL. He used to be named Chad Johnson, but changed his surname to Ocho Cinco in honor of his uniform number 85.) |

It's vanishingly unlikely that you could correctly choose a specific date. For one thing, I don't know; for another thing, even if you cracked this code, you couldn't either. It would be much more likely (but still of very low probability) that you could take me to the prom sometime in your 65th year, but not specifically your birthday. Cal could take a french fry, but couldn't go anywhere. It seems to me logically that either someone can take an egg to Cambodia or someone can't take an egg to Cambodia. Can you give me some hint or some sort of clarification? Hm. Well, no one can take an egg anywhere, and no one can take anything to Cambodia. Egg and Cambodia also cannot go together in a sentence, except under particular circumstances. The item and country are as incorrect (under the rules) as the person, so as long as egg and Cambodia are present the statement is incorrect regardless of whether someone is taking the item and going there or not. All three must be correct to have a correct statement. If a statement is partially correct, I will correct it -- if it is entirely incorrect I will answer no to the statement. For example, [x] can take ink to India, Frank can take [x] to India, and Frank can take ink to [x]. These are all correct, and correspond to the statement "Frank can take ink to India." However, no part of the statement "[x] can take [x] to Germany" is correct. Neither is any part of the statement, "Bill can take a [x] to [x]." Even if the x's were blank instead, these would still be incorrect, because Bill is an invalid name and Germany is an invalid country. Does this help? |

The point of using the empty set in {}|egg|Cambodia is to show that [x]|egg|Cambodia is "no" for all values of [x]. Therefore, if there is no name that can take an egg to Cambodia, the question {}|egg|Cambodia must be answered as yes. |

Doctapeppa? Well, you would have been if you had offered a solution. There would have been several correct ones. For example: - Thomas could take an egg to India. - Bill could not take anything, but could go to Eire and Iceland. |

Is there anything in particular about the person offering a solution that is relevant? User name? Age? Sex? Physical appearance? Status? Registered date? Number of posts? Frequency of posts? Marital status? Musical preferences? |

I presume that Ivan can takes cats no-where? (Obviously the Post Number serves as a code. Using 1=A, 2=B,etc. the number is split into a series of letters which are the first letters of an acceptable solution) |

Hmmmm... interesting. Can Theodore take a gun to Denmark? Can Bob take groceries to Dominica? Can Bert take nothing and grenades to the Democratic Republic of Congo? Can Ted Nugent and Tom Morello each take guitars or girls to the Dominican Republic or to Djibouti? |

Yup. (Obviously the Post Number serves as a code. Using 1=A, 2=B,etc. the number is split into a series of letters which are the first letters of an acceptable solution) You've got it. Doctapeppa (Doctapeppa) New member Username: Doctapeppa Post Number: 2074 Registered: 12-2004 Posted on Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 5:38 am: Edit PostDelete PostView Post/Check IPPrint Post Move Post (Moderator/Admin Only)Ban Poster IP (Moderator/Admin only) Hmmmm... interesting. Mostly correct. The first significant letter is the basis (so that "the," "a," etc. are ignored. Only one name and one location may be used, and a zero means that there is no valid country or item. So "nothing and grenades" is ok, but just "groceries" isn't. Multiple answers are possible where numbers like Doctapeppa's are concerned, because, say, 203 could either be B/--/C or T/C/--. I had the idea for this when I noticed that you first see your post number in the preview, meaning that you can't know what your answer will be until you type something that isn't correct and hit the preview button. |

Hm. I suppose so, but Docd and Doctapeppa wrote the solutions into their previous answers, so I figured it was unnecessary. |
