Is it good for you: Mentally? Physically? Financially? Is it something tangible? Are you being told over and over because you need reminded? Because it's being sold to you? Because it's unpleasant? Because you keep putting off using or doing it? Are "you" H/A/M? Are any of those factors relevant? |

Is it related to puzzle-solving, or any mental processes involved in puzzle-solving? I ask because of "I would hope [you don't need reminded], but it seems so", which you said in response to me asking essentially the same question as one Pika asked. Is it good for you because: it prevents insanity/maintains sanity? Cures insanity? Prevents senile dementia? Improves mental faculties? Increases knowledge? Makes you feel good? Is sanity relevant? |

Haha, I figured you were being generic, but I felt it was worth mentioning in case this was related to something one might say or do when attempting to solve a lateral thinking puzzle. Is it related to learning? Are the mental faculties being improved: Intelligence? Memory? Perception? Imagination? Language? Problem solving? Is it relevant who is "telling you over and over"? If so: is it yourself? A teacher? Friends and family? Society? A book or other media? |

When you say it could be any of those mental faculties, do you mean it can always be any of them, or that the specific ones being improved vary depending on circumstances? Is the book about learning? Is the book teaching you something? "It's good for you" = what the book is telling you over and over? |

Multiple times per day -- what is typical 3? 10? 30? 100? 300+? Are people normally conscious of when they do this? Does involve eating, breathing, blinking, listening, looking, smelling, swallowing, thinking, assuming body postures, digestion, elimination, circulation, touching, feeling, getting dressed, sitting, sleeping, waking up, working, playing. Does it primarily involve the mental? Physical? If mental, does it involve deductive reasoning, regulating emotions, adopting certain attitudes, memory, remembering not to forget, forgetting to remember, knowing things? You had mentioned learning -- does it relate to teaching, reading? By learning, do you mean in the classic sense such as the accumulation of more information? The refinement of ability? The accumulation of wisdom? If physical, does it involve certain body parts? Are there certain trite phrases that relate to this, e.g. look before you leap? |

Look up thick in the dictionary and they have a picture of my skull. Ok, so let me see if I have the first part right. The thing that is good for you is reading in general? Or is it to read the directions, and the first step is often "Read the Directions"? Is it certain text that is preceded by "Notice", to instruct you to notice and therefore read the text? As to the trite phrases, might they be "Leaders are readers", or "RTFM"? Is the telling over and over related to getting your attention so that you will read something that its author (or sponsor) wishes you to read? Is the instruction to read direct ("be sure to read something today"), or indirect ("open your eyes and see where they take you")? When told over and over, is the instruction delivered visually? verbally? though some other sense (nudge nudge)? Is the instruction delivered using english words? One word (read!), Two words (read more!), Three words (you illiterate dolt!)? Is the instruction usually delivered by one form of media? (what are you doing watching this TV - you should be reading) While we read 200 times per day, how often is this instruction delivered per day? 1, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300? Is the solution that people often begin sentences with the word, "Look, ...", or "You see, ..."? Anything like this? Of all of the questions I've just asked, which one represents the most fruitful line of inquiry? |

My opinion on the yes/no thing is that it is legitimate to construct a "meta" or compound question that contains a number of yes/no questions within it. Rather than going through the tedium of asking and answering each of these yes or no questions, one can serve up the suite and ask which one can be aswered yes. Of course, I could be wrong. This is probably a better topic for the chatroom. The message is delivered visually by one form of media, correct? Is the message delivered in the form of text? Graphics? Is the form of media paper with text and graphics printed on it? Some kind of video screen? Printing on objects? Signs? Is the message delivered as part of an advertisement? Is there a single sponsor or family of sponsors of these messages? |

Relevant section of book: cover, table of contents, front section before Chapter 1, chapters, index, back cover, inside cover, spine, page intentionally blank, other? Is the instruction in most books? Only certain kinds of books? Is the text in question intended to be interpreted as giving the instruction? Or is it intended to communicate something else? Does the instruction include a verb? While the instruction is not to read, is it to engage in a visual activity? Mental activity? Physical activity, like opening a book, turning a page, etc.? Sounds like the instruction is in various words and phrases, correct? Is there a typical or frequent phrasing? Is it usually a single word? 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 words? Is it something that is at the top of every page? Every other page? Only certain pages? Anything to do with the page numbers? The practice of putting the title and/or author's name and/or chapter title at the top of pages? |

Often a book has the title of the chapter at the top of the right hand pages, and the title of the book at the top of the left hand page. Is it one of these? Is it the book title? Is this what is being told over and over? |

********* SPOILER ********** This puzzle is based on a bit by the comic genius of Brian Regan. It comes from his comic DVD called Epitome of Hyperbole. The bit goes like this: If reading makes you smart, then how come when you read a book, they have to put the title of the book on the top of every single page in that book? Does anyone ever get halfway through reading a book....What the &^$# am I reading? Oh it's right there at the top....ok....I forget again!.....oh it's right there...woah that is handy... I don't....I don't know what I-...yes I do, yes I do now...that's good, I don't want to have to go all the way back to the cover. Didn't know what I was readin'. Did't know what I was readin'. Knew I was readin' something, didn't know what. Thanks so much for the great questions! |
