Let's name the two people Bill and Mary. I'm assuming that one is male, one is female. Is this okay? Is either person holding the gun? Let's make him Bill, if that's okay. Does Bill shoot the gun? Does Bill shoot the gun on purpose? Does Bill shoot the gun at Mary? Does anyone shoot the gun at Mary? Are either being shot at? |

Is there a war going on? Do the booms represent drums? Footfalls? Something falling? Hitting something? Does this occur outdoors or indoors? Relevant? Is the time period relevant? Is the location relevant? Intriguing puzzle statement, by the way! Is Mary dead? Would it be correct to assume that towards the middle, Bill fires three shots (the bangbangbang) and Mary falls to the floor (thud)? |

Do all of these sounds happen within a relatively short time frame, say within a few minutes? within about an hour? longer? Did Bill fire three times because there were three booms? That is, if there were only two initial booms, would he have shot only twice? Did he want to use the booms (or their source?) as auditory cover for the shooting? Is the source of the booms fireworks? Are tires the source of the screech? Is it a car peeling out? |

Were the booms related to why she was killed? By three shots necessary, could the puzzle work just as well if it were "Boom! Boom! Boom! Bang! Thud! Screech! Boom. Boom. Boom."? Is the reduction in the sound level of the booms due to the boom-maker creating quiter booms? Was it due to the distance to the booms changing? Were the booms muffled by something? Did Bill intend for the booms to mask or hide detection of the gunshots? Did Bill need to burn rubber and drive quickly to escape any particular pursuer or for any particular reason? Or was he driving fast for no reason other than he was generally anxious to get out of there? |

Yes Is the reduction in the sound level of the booms due to the boom-maker creating quiter booms? No; the booms are produced at the same volume at the source throughout the scenario. No Did Bill need to burn rubber and drive quickly to escape any particular pursuer or for any particular reason? Drive by shooting by a gang-banger with the car stereo pounding? Yes! We have a winner! ---+++xxx***SpOiLeRz***xxx+++--- William "Badass Bill" Murdock is driving through the 'hood with is car stereo pounding out rap music when he sees "Bloody" Mary Stevens, a member of a rival gang. He busts out a nine and pops a cap on Mary, who falls to the ground dead, then peels out and drives away. The sound of his stereo recedes into the distance. Congratulations to Davesnothere for solving the puzzle! And good job to everyone else who participated! Seeing as this is my first puzzle, any feedback that you have is much appreciated! Good puzzle, bad puzzle? Easy? Hard? Were there things I could have done better? Would you like to see more "unusual" puzzles/puzzle statements, or should I stick to more "normal" ones? |

Congrats should go to Markobr, who made the lateral leap, asking the questions that broke it open. There should probably be some etiquette that prohibits someone like me from swooping in and stealing the solution. Kind of like when the cheetah makes the kill and the hyenas show up and steal it. Good puzzle, and I agree with Jenburdoo that it's an intriguing form of a puzzle statement. |

As we're not counting points here (or are we?), no such etiquette is necessary. Everyone can read all the questions and find out who had which ideas. Davesnothere found out the source of the booms was moving, and Caesarachilles established the presence of a car. So maybe I swooped in to ask a quite obvious question... An etiquette against asking questions would probably be a bad idea: Laterals with nobody asking anything for days or even weeks are far more common in this forum than people rushing to their keyboards in an attempt to be the first to steal a solution. About the puzzle: A very good idea for the statement, the story behind being quite easy (but not too easy). Oh well, I wouldn't have ruled out Bill being a sociopath... |
