This afternoon I checked my mail, hoping to find a new mail from a nice and smart girl I've known recently. There was no such mail. Yet I was extremely happy about this. How is that possible?

But it's not a dead end: all these answers are meaningful. Don't give up.

Let's break down a previous question: did anything else contribute to your happiness? or only the lack of an email from her?

Was your computer working properly? Were you capable of receiving email from anyone?

You stated you were "hoping to find a new mail". Would you have been happy if one came? Happier than you were when it didn't? Less happy?

Are you at work? If so, and the email came through your work computer, other people might be able to read it, so you are relieved that don't have to be tempted to read it now?

Let's break down a previous question: Good idea. did anything else contribute to your happiness? Yes. or only the lack of an email from her? No: also something else. Good way to address the issue.

Was your computer working properly? Yes, but remember this question when the puzzle will have ended. You might find it funny. Were you capable of receiving email from anyone? Yes.

You stated you were "hoping to find a new mail". Would you have been happy if one came? Yope. It depends. Happier than you were when it didn't? Probably not, but explore. Less happy? Probably yes, but explore.

Are you at a friend's house?
Are you at a public computer, like a library or coffee shop?

Is someone else with you? If you had gotten the email, would that someone have seen it? Would this have gotten you in trouble? A current girlfriend? An ex-girlfriend? A male friend who also like the same girl?

Following up on when you were happy: By answering "noish" to whether you were happy at a later time, did you mean that you were happy at first and then stopped(ish) being happy about it? Or simply that your initial happiness was when you read the email, and it doesn't really matter if you were happy later or not?

Would you rather have read the email at home? Please specify whether you mean literally "read the email" (in which case you should also specify which email you're referring to) or "check my mailbox". Is the timing relevant? yope, be more specific. Should she not have been able to send you an email at that time? Incorrect, she would've been able to send me an email since some days ago, and I knew it.

Or simply that your initial happiness was when you read the email, and it doesn't really matter if you were happy later or not? Straight answer, because otherwise it would be misleading: I became happy some seconds after I had come to know that there was no email from her in my inbox. And nothing happened during those seconds except that I used my mind. So I didn't exactly become happy the same moment I saw the fact, but it wasn't significantly after that, either.

Did the coffee shop computer somehow block her email? No. That's not the right reason why the email wouldn't necessarily have been readable, even in the case she has sent one. Did the email have an attachment? Were you pleased because you thought it might be an - ahem - inappropriate image? No to all.

Let me just sort some things out...

If you'd been home, and she had sent you an email, would you have been able to read it?

At the coffee shop, if she had sent you an email (which you have no way of knowing for sure), you... might not have been able to read it? ...definitely would not have been able to read it?

Would her email have been in English? Relevant?

Was your happiness based at all on an assumption that she had indeed sent you an email? It was based in small part on the possibility that she had sent me an email. But for the most part, it was based on something else. That's the kay to the puzzle. That she hadn't? Not at all. Of course, assuming that she hadn't sent me an email wouldn't have made me happy, would it? :-)

Spam filters relevant? Firewall?

You say you definitely would not have been able to read it at the coffee shop. Were you prevented from reading any email from her there? Or was there something special about this specific email?

You said "This afternoon I checked my mail" - you did this at the coffee shop?

Did you actually open and read these emails? Or just check to see how many you had and from whom?

Were you prevented from reading any email from anyone at the coffee shop?

Is there something in her email address that could be considered "adult" by screening software?

You said "This afternoon I checked my mail" - you did this at the coffee shop? Yes. And btw, re-reading what I've written before is a wise strategy. I tried to be misleading but literally honest.

Did you actually open and read these emails? FA. I said "I checked my email". Or just check to see how many you had and from whom? This one.

Were you prevented from reading any email from anyone at the coffee shop? Yes, at least from that account. But I'm afraid the phrasing isn't completely correct: you're still being misled.

Is there something in her email address that could be considered "adult" by screening software? No. As I told Noel, no spam filters or firewalls are relevant.

Are you, in some relevant way, interested in computer programming?

If she had sent an email, would it have contained any useful information? Or would it have been more of a "test" email? to see, perhaps, whether your email account (or the way you'd set it up) was working?

Upon checking your emails, which, if any, of the following is closest to your reaction:
"She hasn't sent me an email"?
"Her email hasn't reached my inbox"?
"I don't know whether or not her email has reached my inbox"?
"Her email has probably reached my inbox, but I can't see it"?

You mentioned some relevant backstory: had you planned out the scene with her beforehand? Did you ask her to send you an email with the express purpose of you then trying to access it later on? Would she be / Is she similarly happy that you could not find her email?

Is there more than one email account of yours involved? (one web-based, one downloaded)

Or are you talking about the kind of setup where you can check your email in a web browser when you're not at home, but it only stays there until you've downloaded it onto your home computer?

If the latter, did someone else check your email at home, so that's why none is showing up in your web access?

Hello Logician, thank you for giving my puzzle a try :-)

Are you, in some relevant way, interested in computer programming? No.

If she had sent an email, would it have contained any useful information? Maybe, or maybe would have just been friendly chitchat. Not really relevant. Or would it have been more of a "test" email? No, not like this. to see, perhaps, whether your email account (or the way you'd set it up) was working? No, it would have been a "real" email.

Upon checking your emails, which, if any, of the following is closest to your reaction:
"She hasn't sent me an email"? This, at first....
"Her email hasn't reached my inbox"?
"I don't know whether or not her email has reached my inbox"?
"Her email has probably reached my inbox, but I can't see it"? ... and, after some seconds of pondering, this. See below.

You mentioned some relevant backstory: had you planned out the scene with her beforehand? No, not at all. Did you ask her to send you an email with the express purpose of you then trying to access it later on? Nothing like this. Would she be / Is she similarly happy that you could not find her email? If our roles were switched, she would probably be happy for herself as I am for myself.

Or are you talking about the kind of setup where you can check your email in a web browser when you're not at home, but it only stays there until you've downloaded it onto your home computer? ... THIS is a perfect picture of the situation. YES! Congrats!

If the latter, did someone else check your email at home, so that's why none is showing up in your web access? Yope to yesish, explore on this.

I don't know, I'm not sure what else we have to figure out... Two questions: a) How could I know that the mail software was still working properly on my pc, and it wasn't simply that she hadn't written anything to me? b) Why was this awareness making me happy, apart from the fact that there might be an email from her waiting for me back home?

Did you have no emails at all? (When ordinarily you'd expect to have accumulated quite a few?)
So that's what told you that your home email software was still running?

I'm guessing the fact that your home email software was running tells you something else - going along with Ferrets101's line of questioning, did it mean that your computer had restarted and automatically signed on to your email? Was there a blackout at home (which is why you're at the coffee shop), and this means that your power is back on??

******************* SPOILER *************************

Here comes August, holiday time in Italy. Young (*ahem*) Ozymandias goes to his family's mountain house on holiday, about two hours away from his home in the city. On leaving, he starts all sorts of virus-scans, diagnostic programs, defrag utilities etc. on his pc... all those operations that during the year he never performs because they take hours and hours and they unbearably slow down the pc's performance.
BUT... Ozy's home pc isn't very stable, and sometimes has the tendency to auto-reboot (and of course stop at the logon screen, which means that no process restarts at all), and there are also the notorious august city thunderstorms, which might, with a too-near lightning, fry some component or cut off the power, with the exact same bad results.
So, Ozy leaves with a bad feeling, and also with the knowledge that he has absolutely no way to check from remote whether or not his pc will still be functioning properly in two, three days or one week. But that's life.
Some days later, a female friend of Ozy's comes back from holidays, so he goes to an internet cafe in the small mountain town to check his mail through web, and see whether or not she has sent him a mail. He opens his inbox and... it's completely and utterly empty. For a second Ozy's deisapponted and a bit depressed. Then he's surprised: and empty inbox folder? How is that possible? He's got a lot of eBay saved searches, and the notifications arrive in his inbox daily - so she might not have written to him, but eBay must have been writing to him during those days!
Then... suddenly, recollection, and happiness: he must have forgotten his mail client running, on his home pc, and it keeps collecting the mail and emptying the mailbox of all the mails, downloading it on the home pc, every 10 mins. Oh, joy! This means not only that his computer is still running perfectly and has performed no reboot, but also that, by daily checking his webmail, he can indirectly check the operational status of his home pc from his holiday town: no mail in the inbox means that everything's going fine.
So I was happy to have found no mail from that girl (and from nobody else), because it meant that, as Dropofahat asked in the very early post without realizing he had stumbled on the solution itself, "my computer was working properly" :-)

Congratulations to everybody, especially Noel and Dropofahat, for solving it so quickly, another brilliant success for the LPF's sharp minds! :-)
