Is he a farmer? A criminal? Is his profession in the field of [insert LTPF list of fields]? Is there dial soap involved? Does his job have anything to do with pigs? What he did: It caused him to lose an object. Did the pig eat/swallow it? (Pigs love to eat) Was it a valuable object? A piece of jewelry? A gem or any sort? I have the mental image of a guy using too much dial soap to wash his hands, but it ends up loosening his wedding band and it gets swallowed by a pig when he's feeding it... long shot, but who knows. |

Does "it" have to do with what he did with the pig after he slaughtered it? The place in which he stored it? Does he store it with a bunch of meat that is good, but then realizes he can't distinguish it from the bad meat? Is the thing he loses the germs? The good meat? All of his pigs? Does he let a sick pig into the pasture only to realize it's mixed with the others and now he must kill them all? It's always funny to me when two people are on TLPF trying to crack each others puzzles simultaneously in real time, now back to my smelly clothes! |

So he had some "good" meat? And then some meat infected with a germ? And he was grinding the meat to make sausage? And he mixed the good meat with the bad? Making all of it inedible? And the reason he should have known better was more than just he was a farmer, and should have known this kind of thing was a bad idea? Ok, hoping the above is correct: Was the reason the meat became contaminated because he left it out for too long? Is the reason relevant? Should he have known because: The fact that meat goes bad was just recently discovered? Does the neighbor have something to do with why he should have known better? Because of something the neighbor has told him? Is he mixing all of his own meat, or is some his and some of it his neighbors? Is it relevant when HE discovers he shouldn't have done "it"? And "it" is simply mixing infected meat with good meat correct? |

It wasn't spoiled. It was just something that made the sausage inedible (or at least undesirable to eat). (they're not important, but germs would have entered the meat now, not earlier Making all of it inedible? yes. Is there something wrong with the grinder? no Was there something in it that got mixed with the meat? no Was parts coming in contact with the meat lubricated with mineral oil? no Or something else unsuitable? no Or cleaned with something unsuitable? no This post made huge steps forward! (or rather, it made huge steps laterally =)). RECAP: A farmer was making sausage. He put his finger too close to the grinder ("don't touch that dial"), and lost a finger (which most likely put blood and/or the actual finger into the grinder with the sausage, which is where everyone was sidetracked for a while). The reason that he of all people should have known better was that he had done the exact same thing previously and had lost a finger that time, too (loosely referenced by "we'll be right back"). You're nearly there. The only thing left to figure out is what the neighbor's role was. |

Did the neighbor cause the accident in any way? Was the farmer making the sausage for the neighbor? Was he explaining to the neighbor how he lost his finger, carelessly demonstrating what he'd done and having the exact same thing happen again?this one! **********SPOILER**************** This is a true story that happened to my husband's great uncle. He was making sausage one day, put his hand too close to the machine, and lost part of a finger. Later, after he had healed and gone back to work, he made sausage again. While he was working, he told his story to someone who wanted to know what had happened to him. Apparently he didn't learn his lesson from the first time, because as he gestured towards the sausage grinder, which was still running, he got too close for the second time and lost part of a second finger! You would have thought he, of all people, would have known better than to put his finger anywhere near the grinder while it was running! Especially while he was in the process of telling someone what he had done wrong the first time. Thanks to all who participated, and especially to Galfisk for sticking with it to the end. |
