The Catastrophe created Panic. The Success repeated the Catastrophe. The Catastrophe created Catastrophes.

Is this an order of events?
Are Catastrophe, Panic and Success names? Of people? Companies? Any reason why they are capitalized?
Success = success in a product? Job? A relationship? A country? A journey? An exam? Interview?

Are people involved? 1? 2? 3? 4? 5+? 10+?

Disease/contamination relevant? Only very slightly, might mislead. Backstrokes relevant? Only in an extremely roundabout, lateral way... Swimming/bathing? No Polio epidemic? No Historical events? Yesish/Noish Century relevant? Yes Location? Yes

Fleemco198:
so... Catastrophe to Panic to Success to Catastrophe to Catastrophes? is that right? Mostly correct. That's the chronological order, but the cause and effect isn't that clear-cut.

was panic the success? Maybe it was a small part of the success.

21st Century? 19nd? 18rd? 17th? 16th? Less? None of them
Physical Location? No (Rivers, Deserts, Mountains)
Political Location? This is relevant (Countries, Cities, States)
Wars related? Yes
Natural disasters relevant? No
Man-made disasters relevant? Yope (I think)
The people involved = 15+? 20+? 50+? 100+? 500+? 1,000+? More directly involved, probably this. Peripherally, many more. 10,000+? 1,000,000+?

Is a political revolution part of the events?
If so, was a left-wing revolution involved?

Does the word "Backstrokes" have a relationship to what's going on here?

Amosoya:
Does the word "Backstrokes" have a relationship to what's going on here? So minor that it may mislead more than it helps. It may be a task to do after everything else is found out, "What did Backstrokes have to do with it all?"...

Were the Catastrophes multiple events of the same type of the original Catastrophe?
Are the events famously portrayed in film? Literature? Artwork? A dramatic performance?
Does your "noish" answer to whether these were historic events mean that they are really fictional events?
Did the Catastrophe result in lost human lives?
If so, did the people die primarily through violent acts? Suicide? Armed conflict? Murder?
Did the people die from disease? Malnutrition? Drowning? Fire?

Were the Catastrophes multiple events of the same type of the original Catastrophe? Yes/Yope
Are the events famously portrayed in film? Yes Literature? Yes Artwork? A dramatic performance? Yes
Does your "noish" answer to whether these were historic events mean that they are really fictional events? Both real and fictional events are involved.
Did the Catastrophe result in lost human lives? Which of the Catastrophes? Oh, you mean the fourth mention of the word - yes it did.
If so, did the people die primarily through violent acts? This Suicide? Armed conflict? Murder?
Did the people die from disease? Malnutrition? Drowning? Fire? This

Good questions - we're getting somewhere!

Was the original Catastrophe a hoax?
Was it the "War of the Worlds" radio performance?
Was the Panic the public reaction to the radio performance?

Were the life-ending Catastrophes caused by a public misconception about one or more of the other events?

Was the Panic the public reaction to the radio performance? Yes

When it started, it rolled on quickly... :-)

**************************SPOILER****************************

On October 30, 1938, H. G. Wells’ novel "War of the Worlds" was broad-casted on radio in the form of a newscast. People who didn't hear the broadcast from the beginning thought there was a real Martian Invasion going on.

Despite many people mistaking the novel for real, the broadcast was a success, but the 1949 broadcast in Quito, Ecuador left many thousands in panic. When they learned about it not being true, they set fire to the radio offices and the leading newspaper. 20 people were killed in the fire.

So, the radio play about the Martian Invasion catastrophe created panic. The play ws still a success, so it was repeated several times, each time with a new "local" location for the invasion. But one of the replays created a real catastrophe with people dead.

Notes on hints:

Title: "Well, Backstrokes!". The first part hinted at H.G.Wells and Orson Welles. Backstrokes was by no meaning easy to get something out of, but the "original panic" was in New Jersey, "Where birds fly on their back so they won't see the ugliness".

Capital letters indicated the Newspaper headlines about the events.

Very well played!

The "combination of real and fictional events" helped a lot. I wasn't aware of those later performances and their deadly results. Thanks!

I have a couple of puzzles on the Active page. One's almost solved and the other I just posted. Get me back!
