It took me a decade or so to learn that the news wasn't for the ruler. But then who was it for?

I immediately thought of a 12 inch ruler that had to be changed to a metric one (just don't ask me how many centimetres there are in 12 inches).

Is "the news" some part of the text in a Christmas carol?
Did the ruler rule around the time Jesus lived? or recently?

Is ther ein fact no ruler at all, but you thought it was? right. There was a reason why I said "the ruler" rather than "a ruler" though Did you mishear some lyrics? yes (and mis-sing them wrong for years) Or misunderstand what they meant? no

A specific christmas carol relevant? yes

Good thinking, Galfisk! I agree =)

"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heavens all gracious King!" not this one

Did you think that this was a message from the heavens to the all gracious King? no. In the carol I'm thinking of, the news was definitely going to the "king," not from him

Was it two or more words that sounded like two or more different words, one of which you thought was "king"?
Or was it one word that sounded like two words, one of them "king"? similar to looking?

"good tidings we bring to you and your KING" -- ? yep, that's the one

OMG if Yojimbo is right and I'm aure that he is then I have just been cured of the same scrund. I never knew the line was "you and your kin" and have been singing this wrongly for nigh on 35 years. =)

************SPOILER*****************
For the better part of my childhood (and perhaps even into my teens), I thought that the line in "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" was "good tidings we bring to you and your king" rather than "kin."

Which really isn't that embarrassing, because, after all, it's used in the song to rhyme with the word "bring," so why wouldn't it be "king"?

However, what pushes it well into the embarrassing scrund category for me is how much time I can remember spending as a child trying to puzzle out what it meant (I think Nimue would call it an active scrund.) I can even recall stages of my "understanding" of who the king was.

At first, I thought it was nice that someone was wishing my king and I a merry Christmas and all that. But at one point, it occurred to me that, living in the US as I do, I didn't actually have a king. This bothered me for a while, until I realized that most Christmas carol's were old, so they must come from England. So then, I thought for several years that it was customary in England to wander around and give each other news and such to pass on to the king. At some point in the mix, I even thought that the king must be Jesus, but then I was puzzled as to why anyone would be bringing good tidings about Christmas to Jesus, since he should already know about it, having been there at all.

So, as you can see, I spent an awful lot of time dwelling on this one line from this one particular carol, when all I would have had to do to set myself straight was ask someone about it or even just read the lyrics. Oh well.

Glad I could set you straight about it, Peter =)
