As a result of thinking it was pretty, did they eat something they shouldn't have? Touch something? Go somewhere? Say something? They = HAM? They = how many [LTPF list of numbers]? Paid dearly = paid with money? Cost them in some other material way? Died? Got sick? Had a personal/emotional tragedy? |

As a result of thinking it was pretty, did they eat something they shouldn't have? Touch something? This. Go somewhere? Say something? They = HAM? H, all but one A, mixed. They = how many [LTPF list of numbers]? 13 directly involved. Paid dearly = paid with money? Cost them in some other material way? Died? This. Got sick? And this. Had a personal/emotional tragedy? Probably, but irr. |

By touching it, did they encounter a disease? A poison? Was it living? previously alive? |

So, 12 adults and one child saw something, thought it was pretty, touched it, and died. Is this correct? Did they touch it at the same time? Did they see each other touching it? Upon touching it, did they die immediately? in the presence of one another? or did they die after a period of illness? Were the 13 people related to one another by blood? were they friends? colleagues? acquaintances? strangers? This thing they touched: was it a trap? if so, were they the intended victims? Is magic involved? |

So, 12 adults and one child saw something, thought it was pretty, touched it, and died. Is this correct? Not all touched it directly, and not all died, but otherwise pretty much correct. Did they touch it at the same time? Yope. Did they see each other touching it? Some did. Upon touching it, did they die immediately? in the presence of one another? or did they die after a period of illness? This. Were the 13 people related to one another by blood? were they friends? colleagues? acquaintances? All of the above. strangers? I think they all knew eachother. This thing they touched: was it a trap? if so, were they the intended victims? No to all. Is magic involved? No. |

Was it something that was naturally radioactive? Or something manufactured? Would it be more accurately described as an object? Or a substance? |

Was it a pretty, glowing radioactive...thing? And a group of people who were acquaintances came upon it, didn't know it was radioactive/dangerous....and did someone/a few people touch it and then spread the radioactivity to others, causing death? |

Was it something that was naturally radioactive? Or something manufactured? This. Would it be more accurately described as an object? Or a substance? Substance removed from an object. Was it a pretty, glowing radioactive...thing? Indeed. And a group of people who were acquaintances came upon it, didn't know it was radioactive/dangerous....and did someone/a few people touch it and then spread the radioactivity to others, causing death? Pretty much. Almost time to $poil - I won't ask you to figure out the specific sequence of events. But I want you to find out what the object containing the radioactive substance was for, and where in the world this happened. |

radium relevant? No. glow-in-the-dark kind of thing? No - it did glow in the dark but that was not its purpose. some low-tech culture finding a high-tech artifact relevant? No, but OTRTish. |

Did this happen in ...Americas? Africa? Asia? Europe? Middle East? Was the object a tool? toy? container? high technology? jewelry/other decoration? basketball? piece of debris? were the people who caused it to become radioactive still nearby? were they ever nearby? |

Did this happen in ...Americas? this. Africa? Asia? Europe? Middle East? Was the object a tool? In a sense. toy? container? This. high technology? This also. jewelry/other decoration? basketball? piece of debris? Sort of. were the people who caused it to become radioactive still nearby? No - the people that made the object/radioactivity are irrelevant. were they ever nearby? |

[LTPF countries in Americas] please? was the object part of a rocket? missile? airplane? experimental plane? satellite? atomic device? was it leftover from atomic testing? was it placed for some purpose, but our crew found it first? |

[LTPF countries in Americas] please? Brazil. was the object part of a rocket? missile? airplane? experimental plane? satellite? atomic device? This for svv of "atomic device". It is not a weapon, nor weapons related. was it leftover from atomic testing? No. was it placed for some purpose Yes, originally., but our crew found it first? But this is not an accurate description. |

was the device deliberately placed where it was later found by the unfortunate thirteen? did it arrive there accidentally? was it left behind? was it a component of a technological activity (such as astronaut training, what have you)? was it intentionally radioactive? were those inadvertently affected by the radiation aware that it was radioactive? were they aware of its installation? did they dismiss the danger? and -- per the statement -- was it pretty? was that the basis of their interest? did it have some other value? was it a container for another technological device? was its radioactivity collateral (that is, had it become irradiated by something else)? |

was the device deliberately placed where it was later found by the unfortunate thirteen? Yes. did it arrive there accidentally? was it left behind? This. was it a component of a technological activity (such as astronaut training, what have you)? Yes, depending on how narrowly you define "technological activity". Technology is invovled. was it intentionally radioactive? Yes. were those inadvertently affected by the radiation aware that it was radioactive? No. were they aware of its installation? No. did they dismiss the danger? They were not aware of the danger. and -- per the statement -- was it pretty? Yes, it glowed mysteriously. was that the basis of their interest? Yes. did it have some other value? To the unlucky 13? Irr. for the scope of the puzzle. was it a container for another technological device? The container was a technological device, with the radioactive material inside. was its radioactivity collateral (that is, had it become irradiated by something else)? No, it was intentional. |

was it left behind at some decommissioned -- or otherwise abandoned -- military installation? industrial installation? other? This, it was left behind in an abandoned non-military/industrial installation was it no longer useful for its original radioactive purpose? It still worked when abandoned, but had been superseded by newer technology. was it an X-ray machine? a part of one? No, but OTRT. |

was it an abandoned medical facility? This. was the artifact used for medical diagnosis? was it part of a machine used for medical diagnosis? was it used for cancer treatment? And this. ***SPOILER*** In 1987 in Goiânia, Brazil, A part of a radiation therapy machine was stolen from an abandoned hospital and sold to a junk dealer. They were fascinated by the blue glowing substance inside and it was removed and spread around by several people. Four people, including one child, died from radiation exposure, several other got sick, and many houses were contaminated and had to be demolished. I didn't catch this episode when it happened; I took a look at the link you posted, and was astonished. using isotopes as body paint? but leaving the radioactive artifact around like a glowing easter egg was a bit of an oversight, too. amazing. people will always engage in ironically-incredible activities, so the LTPF will always have lots of situations about which we can construct puzzles. I suppose that's a good thing... nice puzzle; thanks. |
