Donna’s life was in ruins. She was scared to look into the mirror, she did not even go shopping because she was afraid of people's reactions if they saw her. Finally, she decided to invite Doc the plastic surgeon to her flat, cried her heart out and begged him for help. Then she lifted the veil covering her face. Doc‘s jaw literally dropped. For a long while, he stared at her, wordless. Then he stuttered: “I am very sorry, Madam. You are suffering from a rare disease and I am afraid I am not able to do anything for you.“ |

Is she suffering from a psychological condition rather than a physical one? |

Is she suffering from a psychological condition rather than a physical one? Yes indeed. |

Did the doctor think she was beautiful and thus her problems were in her head so he could do nothing to improve her face? is there anything else? |

Did the doctor think she was beautiful and thus her problems were in her head so he could do nothing to improve her face? is there anything else? Not really, and here goes the *******************SPOILER************* Donna suffers from a disease called "Body dysmorphic disorder". It has been established that about 1-2% of population have this disease. This disease is officially described as "preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance which causes clinically-significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning". There was a film from the Beyond Belief series showing a young woman who was very beautiful but proud, and was very rude to people around her. One day, one of the offended people tells her something like "may your face be as ugly as your soul". The young woman takes this "curse" seriously, and ends up like our Donna. My favourite scene from this film was when looks in the mirror and the audience sees her face as she sees herself - a greenish, hairy, distorted, horrible thing - and then when the Doc sees her as a perfectly normal beautiful young face. Thank you, Martin, for participating in - and solving - this puzzle. Gee, you were quick. Next time, I must come up with something trickier :-)) |

Ah, arrived at this puzzle too late. Beyond Belief used to freak me out...did you see the one where a woman had been buried alive by her husband, and when this guy was in their house, the tv kept playing footage of the husband digging, despite the guy turning the tv off and unplugging it? That terrified me--and it turned out to be a true story too! And yeah I also saw the one your puzzle is based on; to this day I get a tiny flutter of nervousness sometimes just before I look in the mirror. I'm just a coward, lol =P |

It gave and still gives me the creeps too... the story about the drowned man who comes to a car repair shop asking for his car only to be discovered later in its trunk... at least the story turned out to be false. And at the end, when they told the audience which story was true and which was false... this gave me literally gooseflesh. And Jonathan Frakes as a host was just great ;-)) I saw the story the puzzle is based on once again, and when the moment came when she looks in the mirror, I covered my eyes. Sorry you were late. When I posted the puzzle, I regretted that I had not worded in differently, but you folks are so clever that probably it would not have helped at all :-) |

I remember that episode! And the nightmares I had afterward. I also remember one where a girl gave birth to an octopus. What a fun show. |

Gave birth to an octopus?! I didn't see that one; was it about "Octoman" in the Philippines, or was this an actual octopus? |

I remember this one! A girl has bellyache, her parents bring her to a doctor who says she is pregnant. She claims to be virgin, and in the end, she actually gives birth to an octopus. Later, it is revealed that she was swimming in a pool containing octopus' eggs. Fortunately, this one was a fiction :-)). And the one with the girl who bet to go to a murderer's grave at night, and was found dead in the morning with her skirt pinned to the ground with a knife... |
