picture of a Scotsman = photo whose subject is said Scotsman? photo made by said Scotsman?

Just to check, Scotsman = HAM? from Scotland either by birth or ancestrally?

Is the picture of a specific Scotsman? (in)famous? Could it be of any Scotsman in the same situation and elicit the same response?

Photoshop relevant?

Mirth as in gaiety and laughter? Would the picture have caused amusement for most audiences, or is a particular audience relevant? Is the picture in itself the cause of the mirth, or is it the context in which it is being shown? Is it on display, or is it being shown by an individual? If the latter, is the individual's identity relevant? Is the size of the photo relevant? Colour or B&W? Did the photographer intend to cause amusement? Or did the subject of the photo so intend?

Mirth as in gaiety and laughter? yes Would the picture have caused amusement for most audiences, or is a particular audience relevant? Yes to specific audience. You have to consider the circumstances in which the picture was displayed and viewed
Is the picture in itself the cause of the mirth, or is it the context in which it is being shown? Very much the context. On it's own the picture would not be funny Is it on display, or is it being shown by an individual? neither of these things If the latter, is the individual's identity relevant? It it relevant who showed the picture but it's not an idividual Is the size of the photo relevant? Not really but it was quite big Colour or B&W? If memory serves it might have been black and white but not sure and not really relevant Did the photographer intend to cause amusement? No Or did the subject of the photo so intend? No

(*sigh*) This is going to be another cricket puzzle, isn't it? (*feels left out of the club*)

All right, sport of said sportsperson: cricket? basketball? boxing? tennis? football/soccer? American football? golf? cycling? some form of motorsport? track and field event(s)? other?

Was the picture of this person actually participating in his sport? Was the mirth derived from the fact that it was of this person taking part in his sport? or that it was not? Were comparisons made between his performance in his sport and whatever he was doing in the picture?

Okay, next list of sports - is his sport rugby? field hockey? ice hockey? polo? lacrosse? badminton? martial arts? some form of racing? swimming? fishing? curling? jai alai? Highland games :-)?

Failing all that, is it a sport in the Olympics? recognized by the IOC (thanks to one of Alhucema's puzzles I know now that there's a distinction...)? Is it a team sport? individual sport?

"mugshot type photo" - is it actually a mugshot? Was the Scotsman arrested? Is he generally considered an enforcer in his sport?

Is it a still photograph, or from a motion picture? Was it widely disseminated, or only to a select group of people, or to one?

Can it be considered a game? One in which you earn points? Or in which a referee is included? Or an official association? Can you make money at it? Be employed at it?

Was the Scotsman looking at the camera? Did he know his picture was being taken? Was he wearing anything relevant? Is the photo amusing in isolation, or is it found alongside something else amusing (such as a caption or headline)? Anything relevant about the photo itself (its fuzziness, the amount of light, etc)?

Was the picture taken inside or outside? Is terrain, exact location or date relevant?

Is it a still photograph, or from a motion picture? It's a still photo Was it widely disseminated, or only to a select group of people, or to one? Hard to say. Put it this way it was like a file photo that press and other agencies might use

Can it be considered a game? there are some who would consider it a game One in which you earn points? Yope but be careful Or in which a referee is included? Not a ref as such Or an official association? yes there is Can you make money at it? yes Be employed at it? yes

Was the Scotsman looking at the camera? yes Did he know his picture was being taken? yes Was he wearing anything relevant? It's just a standard photo as i've mentioned before. Think of it like a passport photo that the press would use when running a story about you Is the photo amusing in isolation, or is it found alongside something else amusing (such as a caption or headline)? It's not amusing in isolation but was amusing when shown in a certain context Anything relevant about the photo itself (its fuzziness, the amount of light, etc)? No

Was the picture taken inside or outside? Irr Is terrain, exact location or date relevant? No

Was the context that was funny the juxtaposition of the photo with some text near it? Did it look like the photo was associated with story A when it was really associated with story B?

Is the sport more of a physical challenge (e.g. football, hockey)? or a mental one (e.g. Scrabble, chess, poker)? or a combination (e.g. golf, billiards)?

Is a ball involved in the sport? More than one ball? At least one net? Does the participant use his hands directly to affect the game? Or does he use a tool? Does the sport primarily require hitting something? Moving something? Throwing something? Lifting something?

Sports vaguely similar to billiards...
darts? bowling? shuffleboard? air hockey?

Second group -- producers? Cameramen or other production blue-collar types? Newscasters? Any authorities involved (did someone order the picture to be shown/broadcast)?

Any authorities involved (did someone order the picture to be shown/broadcast)? Order would be too strong but it was certainly suggested

For how long was the picture seen? Oh about 3mins & 5 seconds :0) Was it part of a larger presentation, for example a news show? yes but not this example Or a comedy show? Nor this

If you're unsure whether it was deliberately shown to provoke laughter, is it possible that it was shown by mistake?
On that track, could it be a picture that was mistakenly shown instead of one of someone else with the same name?
Someone with a similar name?
Someone who could have been described in a similar way?
Someone with no apparent similarity at all?
Is his profession relevant to the humour?
Is his name relevant?

If you're unsure whether it was deliberately shown to provoke laughter, is it possible that it was shown by mistake? Hit the nail on the head. There is still much conjecture as to whether the photo was shown by mistake or whether the humour was intentional
On that track, could it be a picture that was mistakenly shown instead of one of someone else with the same name? Not quite
Someone with a similar name? Yes
Someone who could have been described in a similar way? No
Someone with no apparent similarity at all? Other than their name no similarity whatsoever. In fact it would be hard to come up with two more dissimilar people
Is his profession relevant to the humour? Do you mean the picture that was actually shown then no. If you mean the someone else that should have been then yes
Is his name relevant? Both names are relevant given that they are very similar

Thanks. =)

Now, I can't think of many Scottish Darts players, so was the picture of Jocky Wilson? Les Wallace? Mike Veitch? Ross Montgomery? John Henderson?

Was the mistake mixing up Jocky Wilson/Jackie Wilson? Indeed , and as this incident is well documented I'll go ahead and post the .....

**************SPOILER*************

In 1982 Dexy's Midnight Runners appeared on Top of the Pops to perform their cover of the Van Morrison classic "Jackie Wilson Says". During the performance a large screen on stage displayed a photo not of the soul legend Jackie Wilson but of rotund, hard drinking, heavy smoking, scots tungsten thrower Jockey Wilson . Jockey was World Darts Champion at the time.

How this error came to be is still the subject of conjecture. Many people feel it was a joke by the band themselves or by the BBC production team but I prefer to believe that someone at the BBC was asked to show a file picture of "Jackie Wilson" and didn't quite hear the instruction correctly. It's funnier that way.

The puzzle title, while blatently designed to prompt questions about all sorts of nasty things being visible on a kilt wearing scotsman is actually a quote from the song itself.

As for Jockey , sadly he is a complete recluse now,is virtually penniless and has not played Darts in over a decade.

Well done Noel and Torquemada
