Did the student call him incompetent? Was he incompetent? Was the rut real? Or did it only seem like one?
Is he a school teacher? Relevant which grade? Subject?

Called him out -- Told him he was wrong? Challenged him? To a duel?

Did the teacher make a mistake of some sort? Was he stuck trying to solve a problem? Was he failing at something? Was the student?

Was the student in one of the teacher's classes? Does the puzzle refer to something the teacher actually taught?

Any of these relevant:

Location?
Time period?
Season?
Weather?
Terrain?
Other people?
Organizations?

Got in a rut -- the teacher continued to do something that was obviously futile? Had worked himself into a position (during a discussion, speech or argument) which he couldn't get out of? Needed to complete something (say, a math problem) but made a mistake in the middle and couldn't get to the next step?

Was he using a computer at the time? The Internet? Could he not find a website? Or complete an application or other form?

*******restatement*********
i will restate it into a different wording because i think the word rut is a little bit misleading.

Due to the stubbornness of the teacher, the student called him out.

all unanswered questions will be a no...

Was the teacher stubborn in: keeping doing something? Not doing something? Doing something in a certain way? Computers relevant? Is the teacher doing something in an old-fashioned way? Is the teacher wrong regarding something? Is he wrong because technology has changed? Because language has changed? Because some other change?

So, to recap, am I right in saying the internet's relevant, but computers aren't, and it's not to do with technology changing?

But he made some sort of mistake, although not because anything had changed, persisted in doing something, and the student caught him out?

Was the mistake the thing he persisted in doing?
Had he been told before that he was making a mistake?
By the student?
Is the teacher making a mistake that's unusual in any way?
Is it something that most people wouldn't notice as a mistake?
Have other people made the mistake? Do people commonly make the mistake?
Is the mistake something that's been specifically debunked on the interwebs?
Like (as it's English) an incorrect folk etymology?

Was the mistake made in getting this thing from the internet? Or later? Or was it not a mistake to begin with, but turned into one? Could he have gotten it from somewhere else? Would it then not have been a mistake? Relevant where on the internet he got it from? Is what he got: a text? An image? Something else? Copyright relevant? Did he pay for it? When he could've gotten it for free? Or the other way around - did he get something for free that he should've paid for?

Did the student find a paper/thesis on-line and turn it in as his own work? If so, did the teacher know it? Perhaps the teacher didn't even read the paper?

I CAN SEE WE AREN'T GETTING ANY WHERE WITH THIS PUZZLE SO I THINK I WILL JUST SPOIL IT.

spoil!

Every time the student turned in a paper the teacher barely looked at it and assumed it as junk work. so one day the student picked a poem off the web and turned it in as his own. As the student suspected the teacher again assumed it as junk work, so when he was discussing it in front of the class the student called him out that it was not his but some famous writer's. the student was satisfied.
