Correction: "bat" should be "bad". I hope I won't go to jail for being bad at spelling. |

Did she travel to another country than she intended? Yes. Aircraft hijacking involved? No. Did she go to jail in a foreign country? Yes, at least initially. Was it because something she: said? Did? This. Had? And this. Didn't? In some way. Hadn't? Was? Wasn't? The others don't really fit. She: HAF? Yes. Jail: real actual jail? Yes. Did she make a mistake because she was bad at geography? Yes. Is she a citizen in [LTPF list of continents]? Europe. |

Did she go by: car? Bus? Train? Boat? Plane? Did she go to a country in [LTPF list of continents]? Did she bring something that was illegal in that country? If so, was it illegal where she came from? Where she intended to go? Was what she did illegal in any of those places? Did she mix up two countries? Or mistake something else for a country? Like a state name? Or the other way around? |

Would she have avoided jail, had she gone to the correct destination? Did she buy a ticket to the wrong place? Or just board the wrong train? Were she going to the final destination of the train? Or somewhere along the way? Relevant? Did the train cross more than one country border? Relevant? Is the illegal thing a: substance? Animal? Weapon? Something valuable? Was it confiscated? By customs? Relevant that many borders are not routinely checked by customs? |

Would she have avoided jail, had she gone to the correct destination? Probably. Did she buy a ticket to the wrong place? This. Or just board the wrong train? This also. Were she going to the final destination of the train? No. Or somewhere along the way? So, yes. Relevant? Not really. Did the train cross more than one country border? She did, but not all of them in the same train. Relevant? Somewhat. Is the illegal thing a: substance? This. Animal? Weapon? Something valuable? Yes. Was it confiscated? Yes. By customs? Yes. Relevant that many borders are not routinely checked by customs? No. |

Did she apply for a political asylum? No. This is in my other puzzle. Were the country of her departure and the country of her intended destination on the opposite sides of the iron curtain? FA. Same question for the country of her departure and the actual destination. FA. Was the illegal thing a drug? Yes. Not really relevant which one, assume cocaine. |

Was she a drug runner? Was she supposed to hand the drugs over to someone else? Thereby avoiding customs? But when she arrived, there was no accomplice to help her? Did the accomplice work in customs? Or did she have some other way planned to fool/bypass customs at her intended destination? Which didn't work because she ended up somewhere else? FA: this happened after the fall of the iron curtain, right? Relevant exactly when? Is it based on a true story? On fiction? FYOI? Did she go much farther than her intended destination? Or much shorter? Or about the same distance, but in the wrong direction? Did she travel from one European country to another? EU relevant? |

Did the accomplice work in customs? No. Or did she have some other way planned to fool/bypass customs at her intended destination? Probably. At least hiding the drugs well. Which didn't work because she ended up somewhere else? Wrong. FA: this happened after the fall of the iron curtain, right? Yes. Relevant exactly when? No. Is it based on a true story? Probably. At least the newspapers brought it as a true story. On fiction? FYOI? Did she go much farther than her intended destination? Or much shorter? This. Yesish to city: smaller than a city? One of the relevant places is smaller than a city. Did she want to go to: East Europe? West? North? This. South? Which one did she end up in? Germany involved? Yes. This is where she in fact went. "End up" is not entirely correct, though. France? She travels through France, too. Did she want to go to [LTPF list of Northern European countries]? Was her intended destination smaller than a city? Or was that her actual destination? Did she do something stupi to get caught? Did she want to go to [LTPF list of Northern European countries]? Norway. Was her intended destination smaller than a city? No. Or was that her actual destination? Yes. Did she do something stupi to get caught? Not really. What got her caught was quite understandable given her situation. Like trying to sell the drugs herself? No. Or was she caught in a routine customs control? Yesish. If so, would the control have been different/less rigorous at hr intended destination? FA. |

What's left to find out is why she got caught, right? Relevant how she concealed the drugs? Did someone see them? Did some aspect of her behavior arise suspicion? What's left to find out is why she got caught, right? Yes. Relevant how she concealed the drugs? No. Did someone see them? Finally, yes, of course. Not initially, however. Did some aspect of her behavior arise suspicion? Noish. Was the disguised as a pregnant woman with the drugs around her waist, and did something very un-pregnant-woman-like? No. Or had she swallowed them? No or irrelevant. Did she become under the influence of the drugs? No. If so: intentionally? Accidentally? Relevant what country she came from? Not really. It was in Europe, right? Yes. Was this in the EU? Yes. Was it especially small? No. Was it formerly Communist? No. Was it on the Iberian peninsula? Yes. Andorra? No. Was it on the mainland of Europe? Yes. Was it in the former USSR? No. I will tell you: Spain. Hint: Even after her geotrottel-like mistake it was still bad luck that she was caught. Just think about what could have raised suspicion of a general kind in the customs officer. |

Refusal to answer questions? Answering questions in a suspicious manner? Suspicious appearance? Suspicious actions? Suspicious-looking friends? Suspicious clothing? Would any customs officer have noticed the evidence? Or would he have had to be new to the job? Highly experienced? Extra paranoid compared to his fellows? Refusal to answer questions? No. Answering questions in a suspicious manner? Very probably. Suspicious appearance? No. Suspicious actions? No. Suspicious-looking friends? No. Suspicious clothing? No. Would any customs officer have noticed the evidence? Not necessarily, but anyone could notice it - which doesn't mean being suspicious because of it. Or would he have had to be new to the job? Highly experienced? Extra paranoid compared to his fellows? Thisishly. In some other way different from other officers? Is the officer's gender, ethnicity or language relevant? No. |

Is the FA that she crossed the border twice? That someone was in a position to notice? Did she change trains in Bergen an Rufen? Is this relevant to how she was caught? I don't know the answer to this - when trains cross customs-controlled borders, do they stop at the border for customs? Or are there customs officers on the train? Is this relevant? Was there anything suspicious about her ticket to get to Bergen? Did she even have a ticket? As she'd only intended to travel to Germany, was she wearing relatively little clothing for someone who's heading to Norway? |

Is the FA that she crossed the border twice? This. That someone was in a position to notice? Did she change trains in Bergen an Rufen? You mean Bergen auf Rügen? Well, I would say Yope. She arrived there, somehow figured out she was at the wrong place and where she really should get and then, of course used another train. Is this relevant to how she was caught? Something she did in Bergen auf Rügen is highly relevant. I don't know the answer to this - when trains cross customs-controlled borders, do they stop at the border for customs? Or are there customs officers on the train? Is this relevant? Assume customs officers on the train. It's not really crucial but I think the story is more plausible this way. Was there anything suspicious about her ticket to get to Bergen? YES. Did she even have a ticket? Yes. As she'd only intended to travel to Germany, was she wearing relatively little clothing for someone who's heading to Norway? No. |

Duh! How did I manage to get the name of the place wrong? Was the ticket to Bergen bought when she realised her mistake? So was it bought in Bergen auf Rugen? Was it a single? Return? A ticket to Bergen and then on home to Spain? Is this what looked suspicious? Is it relevant that to travel from Germany to Norway by land is a very long way round? Was the ticket to Bergen bought when she realised her mistake? Yes. So was it bought in Bergen auf Rugen? Yes. Was it a single? Probably. Return? No. A ticket to Bergen and then on home to Spain? Possible but not likely. Is this what looked suspicious? Not the possible "back to Spain" part but... you're almost there. Is it relevant that to travel from Germany to Norway by land is a very long way round? No. Did someone wonder why she didn't just hop on a ferry? No. Assume she indeed used a ferry for going to Sweden and the ferry trip was included in the train ticket. |

So something about the ticket she bought in Bergen auf Rugen, once she'd realised her mistake, aroused suspicion? Was it the nature of the ticket? The time she bought it? Method of payment? Did someone wonder why a traveller who was obviously Spanish was buying a ticket from Germany to Norway? Did someone notice that she was travelling on a ticket from Bergen auf Rugen to Bergen, and wonder whether that could possible be coincidence? |

So something about the ticket she bought in Bergen auf Rugen, once she'd realised her mistake, aroused suspicion? Yes. Was it the nature of the ticket? What constitutes the "nature" of a ticket? The time she bought it? No. Method of payment? No. Did someone wonder why a traveller who was obviously Spanish was buying a ticket from Germany to Norway? No, this wouldn't be too unusual. Did someone notice that she was travelling on a ticket from Bergen auf Rugen to Bergen, and wonder whether that could possible be coincidence? YES. This is the solution. I'm sorry, Torquemada, that I didn't post here for such a long time when you solved one of my puzzles. For indeed now is the time for a ===== SPOILER ===== A spanish woman tried to smuggle drugs from Spain to the city of Bergen, Norway. She decided to go by train. Unfortunately for her, there is a German town by the name of Bergen auf Rügen, and by mistake she bought a train ticket and got a train connection to Bergen auf Rügen. When she arrived there she soon found out what was going wrong and bought a ticket to her intended destination. At one of the borders she had to cross, a customs officer noticed that she had a ticket from Bergen to Bergen. This really was something unusual, so he looked at her luggage a bit closer than usual, asked her a few more questions than usual... and found out she was smuggling drugs. |
