Would it only be atrocious if it happened when you were still alive? We have already established it couldn't be done when she was alive. To avoid speculations and to make it clear, he did not physically do anything more to her corpse than we have established above. The atrocious aspect consisted in something else yet to be revealed. Did doing this affect anyone else? Yesish Parents? No If so, was this effect positive? Definitely not Negative? Yope |

Yesish, with sufficiently vague values of "caused" Did he done to her something even more atrocious than presenting her corpse as an odd animal? No Or is that it? Basically, yes Or do we need to find out how she died? It is a macabrously interesting piece of information, which makes his deeds even more repugnant. However, I think the key part has been revealed; you can either keep guessing a little bit more about the way she died, or post a short summary of the story without this detail. I will spoyle when you guess the detail or post the summary, whichever is earlier. |

Tangible object = living animal/organism? Person? This Animal? Plant? Part of her own body? Is her death common by today's standards? No More so by her era's standards? Very much so Time period: 1800's? This 1700's? (Insert list of centuries) Is the third party's occupation relevant? You mean the person who immediately caused her death? There is a FA lurking. |

Died in childbirth? Yes! And here goes the ***********SPOILER************** The woman in our puzzle was Julia Pastrana (1834-1860). She suffered from an illness called hypertrichosis – her whole body was covered with straight black hair - had jutting jaw and swollen gums. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Pastrana However, apart from that, she also possessed a shapely figure, a harmonious voice, spoke three languages, could sew and cook, and was eager to learn new things. She never complained of her situation, she even seemed to be quite happy with it. She was exhibited as "the marvelous hybrid or bear woman" or "a hybrid between human and orangutan", or even "The Nondescript". During her performances, she sang and danced. She was showed by a man named Theodore Lent, who finally married her. While she was in deep love with him, he was only using her to earn money and was not kind to her. At the age of 25, she became pregnant. The doctors feared difficulties at childbirth as Julia was frail and had too narrow hips. On 20 March 1860, she gave birth to a baby boy. He was covered with hair as well as his mother, and lived only thirty-five hours. Julia died five days later of post-birth complications. Her husband, however, wanted to make profit even after their death. He sold the corpses of his wife and his newborn son to Professor Sukolov of Moscow University. The Professor embalmed the bodies (with extremely lifelike results) and placed them in an anatomical museum. When Theodore Lent heard of the profit his wife and child were earning after their death, he sued Professor Sukolov and forced him to release the corpses. He then went on a tour showing his dead wife dressed in her dancing costume and their baby in a sailor suit. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1SO0hIyxfzs/RjoqSbicYWI/AAAAAAAAA4k/5hxdFPelztA/s400/Julia.jpg After many peripeties, he died in a lunatic asylum. Julia Pastrana’s remains and those of her sons continued touring the world until 1973, then they were placed in storage. In 1976, the baby’s mummy was destroyed by vandals, and in 1979, Julia was stolen. She was re-discovered in 1990, and now rests in peace in a sealed coffin at the Department of Anatomy at The Oslo University. Very interesting (and bizarre)! I had not heard this story before. I knew there had to be some simple explanation for her death, it just took me a while to put together the pieces. |
