Did the statement relate to how long he had had his position? His number of publications? The classes he taught? The number of students working for him?

Did the statement relate to how long he had had his position?no His number of publications? In the actual case (from a short story), yesish or yope. But in principle, this could work. The classes he taught? no The number of students working for him?In the actual (fictional) case, no. But in principle, this could work.

Statement example:

All my students get straight A!

Accurate, but misleading since he gives away good grades without the students getting the chance to earn it, as he usually don't attend his classes.

Is the professor's department/field relevant?
If so, [insert list of departments/fields] (perhaps pulled from the list of majors at a random university such as mine or yours)?

Could this be call exaggeration? Lying? Stretching the truth? Faulty statistics? Did he intend to make a misleading statement? Does he believe the misleading statement?

Does the statement take a rough form of things per unit time (such as papers/grants/students/etc per year/month/day/etc)? Does it take form of something else per unit time?

Following on the publications route that is a yesish or yope...is he counting publications that shouldn't be counted (such as writing a letter to journal and calling it a publication)? Are we talking about publications as in journal articles? Does he quote his number of emails sent (and thus mixing emails about golfing with Prof Smith with emails about quantum philosophy of the spleen with Prof Smith)?

Could a few minutes of research on the part of the listener fix the misleading nature? Could a few hours? Is the misleading statement near impossible to sort out so that no one could really know for sure?

Is this misleading to himself? Close colleagues? Staff/faculty of the university? Dean/president/administration? Public? Media? Random people?

Would an academic see through the misleading nature? An academic of his field/department? A close colleague?

Is the motive for misleading relevant? If so, is he trying to keep his job? Angling for a promotion? Looking for more funding? Looking for students? Resources/labspace?

Is he saying he has a lot of publications? More publications than someone else? More than average? More than the minimum?

Is he counting publications submitted? Reaching review process? Actually put in the journal? Publications referenced in other publications? Drafts on his computer not submitted yet?

Is the relevant statement based on opinion? Qualitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? Quantitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? Statistics?

By what percentage, roughly speaking, is he stretching the truth? +10 percent? +50? +100 percent? -10? -50? -100?

Do we have to know the fundamentals of the academic process? Would it help to know them? Or am I barking up the wrong tree trying to think like an academic?

Is the motive for misleading relevant? yes If so, is he trying to keep his job? Angling for a promotion? Looking for more funding? Looking for students? Resources/labspace? the first is closest, but all could woirk equally well

Is he saying he has a lot of publications? no More publications than someone else? no More than average? no More than the minimum? noish

Is he counting publications submitted? no Reaching review process? noActually put in the journal? no Publications referenced in other publications? noDrafts on his computer not submitted yet?The story was first published in 1991, so he probably didn't use a computer. But he's EXPLICITLY talking about drafts

Is the relevant statement based on opinion?no Qualitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? no Quantitative facts (or at least stating such facts)? yes Statistics? see previous answer

By what percentage, roughly speaking, is he stretching the truth? +10 percent? +50? +100 percent? -10? -50? -100? nothing that specific

Do we have to know the fundamentals of the academic process? noWould it help to know them? no Or am I barking up the wrong tree trying to think like an academic? Yes--this sort of midsleading statement can be made in non-academic contexts as well

Did he say that he had a certain number of publications?

Did the number appear to refer to something other than what it actually did?

Did the academic superiors have a scrund? Did the professor know something his superiors didn't (for example, that something new had occurred or that something had ended?) and did not mention this?

Was the professor lazy in the sense that he said as little as possible? Or that he did as little work as possible?

He was lazy in that he didn't want to calculate the exact number?

"Scores" relevant? Or some other specific term used to mean a certain number?

Should the number, in context, properly have been exact? Perhaps he introduced an error in something? Was the number he provided actually used for some purpose? In a calculation that led to a serious and misleading error?

"I am 99.9% done" ?

"I am about 80% done" ? ( The famous 80/20 rule )

"I am half way through them [the drafts]" ? ( Referring, for example, to the number of titles he read/wrote/edited. When one considers number of pages, however, the picture is very different because he started with the smallest ones. )

"One down, a million to go?" no
"Step one completed, on to step two?" no

Was it assumed that he spoke of completing something when he was referring to part of something?

"I am 99.9% done" ?

"I am about 80% done" ? no ( The famous 80/20 rule )

"I am half way through them [the drafts]" ? ( Referring, for example, to the number of titles he read/wrote/edited. When one considers number of pages, however, the picture is very different because he started with the smallest ones. ) no

He yopeishly mentioned a number: did he mention a word that usually represents a number? But can mean something else as well? Did he mention a fraction? Is he "halfway done" (with a disingenuous definition of "half")? "Almost done"?

since you say it is possible that the deception might never be found - is it to do with where the "completed" articles are now according to the professor? like "in the mail"? anything to do with the supposed loss or destruction of the papers? like "the dog ate them", there was a fire in my office/at my home?

HINT: Keep in mind that what the lazy professor says would virtually always be taken as saying that he's making progress but, if taken literally, would be compatible with his having done nothing at all. Of course, he's trading on the fact that no one will take it that way.

Weasel words relevant? (see wikipedia if you need to).No, but thanks for introducing me to this delightful concept!
Does he say "I am <something>"? "I have <something>"? "I did <something>"? "I'm done with <something>"In the actual (fictional) case (a short story), he said "I have" something, any of your formulations could work for the puzzle.

HINT: Think of something you learned about numbers in first grade (or maybe even kindergarten).

Did he say something about "a number of" accomplishments? Is it relevant that zero is a number, too? One?

******** SPOILER ***************
When the dean asked the lazy professor about his publication record, the professor answered that "he had a number of Tennyson articles about to be sent off for publication, and. . .assure[d] himself he wasn't actually lying; zero was a number." This is from my short story "Break, Break, Break," to which I'm including a link, as you're no doubt all panting to read it.

Thanks for sticking with the puzzle, everyone, and for solving it, Galfisk, and please check out my new puzzle you-know-where.

Thanks for the puzzle, though the honor of solving it belongs to Markobr, not me.
Your short story was enjoyable in a depressing sort of way. Poor guy.

I pity him, too, but can you imagine how many readers don't because they figure his problems are his own fault? They're all heart, right?
