The initials C.B. - do they stand for a name? If so, a real person? Male/female? Actor/actress? A famous one? The title is largely irrelevant to the puzzle. It's the punchline to a well-known joke about director CB De Mille. Do all the "booms" have the same origin? No. Do all the "splashes"? Yes. Is a war movie being made? Yes. If so, is it a real one? Yes. A well-known one? Yes. |

Relevant? Not really, it could be two or four. Three is the standard for this kind of story, though. Does the actor always fall from the same height? Yes. Relevant? Yes. Is he shot at? No. Or do the explosions have a different cause (e.g. grenades)? Yes, but not grenades. Does Boom 3 damage anything relevant? Yes. Good questions. |

Do all the boom/splash series follow in a row (I mean are they filmed in one take without cutting)? Could they be stopped anytime (e.g.after Boom 1), or are all the booms triggered at the beginning and can't be stopped? Is it relevant who calls the word "cut"? Are the explosions caused by real/fake war material? If so, bombs? mines? (we have already excluded grenades and shots, correct)? Is it relevant to know which war was the movie about? The location? Does the actor fall into water? If so, is it sea? lake? river? pond? swimming pool? Does the actor fall, stand up, and immediately fall again? Does he stand on something relevant? Is the time between the boom and the respective splash relevant? Is the time between each boom/splash series? |

Are Boom 1 and Boom 2 identical (as to their origin and result?) Yes. Does Boom 3 differ in its origin/result from Boom 1/2? Yes (in both origin and result). |

I was asking whether all the booms and splashes were planned by the director, and you cautioned me of a possible FA. Was that because the booms and splashes planned by the director were not the same booms and splashes which actually happened? If so, was the one unplanned Boom3/Splash 3? Is any of the booms/splashes just said? |

So the Actor/the Director/someone else says "Boom" in Boom 1 and 2, while there is no real explosion, right? Does whoever say it as a signal for the actor to fall into the water? And then for the third time (Boom 3) a fake bomb goes off? |

Does the scene look something like this, then: A war movie is being made. They need a shot of the Actor falling into water after a warship is hit with a bomb. They do not need the bomb for the take, just the part when the Actor falls into water. The Director says "Boom" (in the sense of "Action") and the Actor falls into water. Twice. For the third time, a prop bomb goes off when it shouldn't have. The Actor, surprised, does not fall into the water this time, looks puzzled at the Director, who looks puzzled at him for a while, then calls "Cut" and ends the scene. Correct? |

So let's see what we have wrong. Do they need the bomb for the take? When the Director says Boom (eg in Boom 1), is it the only Boom or is there also the sound of the explosion? Was the explosion filmed separately? |

Are they filming boom1 and boom2 as well? Or are they just rehearsing the scene? In the hope that when they do it "live", everything will go smoothly? Is the fake bomb: misplaced? Overpowered? Can the structure the actor is standing on be called a platform? Is it not strong enough for the blast? Is the fake bomb meant to produce: a blast of air? Light? Noise? Smoke? Debris? Is something damaged in addition to the platform? Does the damage reveal that it's just a movie set? Such as plywood painted to look like steel? Or something bending/breaking that wouldn't if it was made of the right material? |

So they are rehearsing the scene twice. The Director says Boom 1 and Boom 2, and the Actor makes Splash 1 and Splash 2. Then they go for the "real" take. Cameras are rolling, the slate is clapped and the Director calls "Action". However, the bomb does not go off. The Actor therefore feels no need to fall into water. Correct? |

Is the actor surprised by the: light? Noise? Smoke? Debris? Damage to the platform? Is he startled? Did the bomb go off exactly when planned? Was the actor prepared for it to go off when it did? Is the nature of the damage to the platform relevant? Is it relevant how the bomb managed to damage the platform? Or why everything got set up so that it did? |

Is the actor surprised by the: light? Noise? Smoke? Debris? Damage to the platform? None of these. Is he startled? Probably not. Did the bomb go off exactly when planned? Yes. Was the actor prepared for it to go off when it did? Assume yes. Is the nature of the damage to the platform relevant? No. Is it relevant how the bomb managed to damage the platform? No. Or why everything got set up so that it did? No. Assume it was a scene where a bomb hits a ship and a sailor dives over the side to escape. I have watched the movie tonight just because of your puzzle ;-)). Hope you liked it. There were two scenes which might fit the description in the puzzle statement. Can I ask specifically about them, or would you consider it as spoyling the fun? Go ahead, but DO NOT listen to the director commentary yet, as it is where I got this puzzle. Great movie isn't it? Especially considering how old it is. One of my favorites, and miles better than Pearl Harbor. |

I must confess one terrible thing. I had some work to do, so I watched the movie with one corner of my eye just to spot someone falling into water. Now it's out, I deserve to be shot down in flames. But I promise to watch it again. Was it the scene when a guy falls through some sort of railing (is it called gunwale)? If so, is the railing relevant? Was he surprised with something related to technology? Something any of the crew did? said? |

So he was surprised because he expected to hear a person, but didn't? Yes. Did he expect the director to yell "bang" the third time around as well? Yes! ************************************************* SPOILER ************************************************* The director of Tora Tora Tora was rehearsing a scene with an extra whose job was to leap from a sinking ship as it exploded behind him. The explosive special effect was expensive, so for the "rehearsal," the director shouted "Boom!" to represent the explosion, at which point the extra dived into the water. They did it a second time -- the director shouted "Boom!" and the extra dived again into the water. Satisfied, the director ran the cameras and the explosion went off perfectly. But the extra didn't jump. The director shouted "Cut!" and demanded, "Why didn't you jump?!?" Replied the extra, "You didn't say 'Boom!'" |
