It was a fairly routine job, he had done things like this many times before. But this time he died.

Would the job possibly require university education? No. Vocational training? Yes.

Is it a very qualified job? I'd say medium.

A long shot in the dark: is he a driver? No.

So a building demolition man does his routine demolition to a particular building whose attributes later caused his death? Yesish - this particular demolition job is demolition of a bridge.
Was there some kind of poisonous material involved in the making of the building? Yes!
Asbestos? But no.
Tip: To keep the puzzle from devolving into random guessing of hazardous substances, you may want to find out what exactly he did, and how he died.

Is it a suspension bridge?
A railway bridge? Either this
Is it designed to carry vehicles? Or this.
Pedestrians?
But the exact purpose of the bridge is irrelevant, other aspects are more relevant.

Ok, not knowing much about heavy structural construction (or deconstruction)...
Did he have some sort of socket drill to turn the bolts out?
Is there a particular nature to the machine that still needs to be figured out?
Were the bolts themselves of a poisonous nature?
What the bolts were coming out of a poisonous material?
Did removing the bolts create a dust of sorts that he inhaled?

Did he have some sort of socket drill to turn the bolts out? No.
Is there a particular nature to the machine that still needs to be figured out? Yes indeed.
Were the bolts themselves of a poisonous nature? Yes! The bolts were plated with toxic cadmium metal.
What the bolts were coming out of a poisonous material? No.
Did removing the bolts create a dust of sorts that he inhaled? Yesish! Almost there!
Hint: grinding dust would probably be to coarse to become inhaled in lethal doses - so what did he do to the bolts?

Did he pulverize them?
Melt them? I'll call this close enough - he used a cutting torch.
And he inhaled the steam (or whatever you call that)? Vapor.

**SPOILER**

Cadmium Related Fatality

April 21, 1992, a worker used an oxyacetylene torch to perform demolition work on a bridge which spanned a creek. He was to salvage guardrails on the bridge and to also salvage a gauge shelter which was mounted on a platform next to the bridge. With no respiratory protection, he spent the morning cutting anchor posts and bolts to remove the bridge rails; these were later found to be cadmium-coated. After lunch, he worked to remove the gauge shelter which was anchored to the platform on both an exterior and interior flange. Wearing no respirator, the worker entered the shelter and cut the bolts with the torch; these were galvanized. The employee felt ill after coming out of the shelter. His condition continued to worsen; he was hospitalized and died May 13, 1992.
