I was hesitating about posting this puzzle as it may be quite tricky if you don't know anything about it. But let's try it, I'll give away a hint when it will be necessary. He was simplifying it, but it was still complicated, so he used a map and made simplifying simpler. |

Map: a paper map? Computer map? Is it a normal map of geography? Or a building? Or cavern or mine? Is "it" a device? Drawing of some sort? Something that is written? Can it be called a plan? Is a route relevant? Roads relevant? Travel? Was it simple after he had simplified it with help of the map? it1=it2, right? |

Map: a paper map? Computer map? Irr Is it a normal map of geography? Or a building? Or cavern or mine? No to all, here comes the tricky part Is "it" a device? Which one? But assuming it1, no. Drawing of some sort? No Something that is written? Yes, for it1 Can it be called a plan? No Is a route relevant? Roads relevant? Travel? No to all Was it simple after he had simplified it with help of the map? Yes it1=it2, right? No |

Is it2 the act of simplification? Yes Is the map a map of a physical thing? No Or is it a thought map? No, I think, but I'm not sure what do you mean by that A flow chart? No Is he simplifying a computer program? Noish, maybe for svv of computer program |

Is he simplifying something related to computers? Or is he simplifying a work procedure? Or other procedure? Does the map show how "it" was before the simplification began? By thought map, I meant mind map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map |

Is he simplifying something related to computers? Yesish Or is he simplifying a work procedure? Yope, it's not "it", but at the end it may simplify a work procedure Or other procedure? No Does the map show how "it" was before the simplification began? Yes, but in specific form By thought map, I meant mind map No it's nothing like this |

Is the keyboard relevant? QWERTY? DVORAK? Does the map show which keys are frequently used, and/or used right after one another? No to all, relation with computers can be a bit misleading, that's why I answered yesish. Finding connection with computers may help you, but it can also distract you. |

Is he simplifying a chip design? Yesish, but not directly Using a map of the physical chip layout? Or the functional layout? This is closest, but it's special kind of map A block diagram? Is it a digital chip? It's not the "it", but digital chip is involved Finding out what the "it" is may be a key. |

Is it a programming language? Binary or other code? Mathematical formula or process? This, though it probably isn't something you know from math class Some other kind of step-by-step process? As you noticed, this require knowledge of specific field. I'll let you guess for a while, maybe you figure it out, otherwise I'll post a hint that should lead you to solving puzzle. |

Is the field: electronics? Boolean logic? Chip design? Programming? Chip manufacture? Is "it" used in the: design process of a chip? Fabrication process of a chip? Can a knowledgeable person, looking at "it", see what the chip does? |

Is the field: electronics? It's part of this, but... Boolean logic? THIS is the exact field Chip design? it's also part of this Programming? Chip manufacture? No to rest Is "it" used in the: design process of a chip? Yes Fabrication process of a chip? No Can a knowledgeable person, looking at "it", see what the chip does? Yes. Only in very basic form, but yes indeed. |

Is he trying to simplify it using: A layout of the logic gates involved? A formula showing what they do? A truth table? None of these, though he needs a truth table before he start simplifying and at the end he want to get the layout. :-) But that's just a little trivia. This puzzle is almost solved, you just may want to find out what the Map is. |

Is it called a map? Yes Is the map made by a human? Yes By computer? No, not in this case (it could be, but computer can also simplify it right away without map) Is the reason why it needs simplification important? No, the simpler the better ;-) Evolutionary circuit design relevant? No |

I don't think I'm familiar with this type of map - would reading up on boolean logic enlighten me? Would a mathematician be familiar with this sort of map? does the map contain: logic gates? Mathematical formula(s)? |

I don't think I'm familiar with this type of map - would reading up on boolean logic enlighten me? I didn't really expect people know about this map, that's why I hesitated to post this puzzle, but you're close and I believe it should be easy to find on google at this point. Would a mathematician be familiar with this sort of map? Maybe, if he works with boolean algebra does the map contain: logic gates? Mathematical formula(s)? No to both. |

Is it a Karnaugh map? Yes I think now I can post the **************SPOILER************* He is simplifying boolean algebra expressions. You can simplify it step by step applying certain rules, but it is very complicated process. But using Karnaugh map is pretty simple and at the end you get the simplest form of the expression. It is more mathematical process, but it's part of chip design, because you need boolean expression to design a circuit and the simpler expression is the less logic gates you need. I must admit this wasn't the best puzzle... it required good knowledge of this field, but you managed to solve it surprisingly fast. Congratulations to Galfisk, you solved this puzzle almost on your own. Also thanks to It so happend for asking some good questions. And I promise, no more geeky questions from me! ;-)
