"That wasn't the end of it, it only broke off!" she exclaimed, horrified. But it wasn't what she had thought it was, which was a great relief, but now she had a real cause to worry. |

Let me write it as follows: "That wasn't the end of it-1, it-2 only broke off!" she exclaimed, horrified. But it-3 wasn't what she had thought it was, which was a great relief, but now she had a real cause to worry. Does it-2 = it-1? a part of it-1? Does it-3 = it-1? it-2? or does it-3 refer to the process of breaking it-2 off? |

Is "it" an object? maybe not an 'object' as such. You might want to define Solid? yes Liquid? no Metal? Wood? Glass? Plastic? Plaster? Other? I'm actually a little unsure about this, but I will try to find out the exact material. It didn't seem like any of the materials above, however |

Soccer ball? this size is closest, but rather misleading Microwave? Washing machine? Car? House? Is the part it broke off from smaller than [above list]? somewhere between a soccer ball and a microwave, I think, but also a little misleading Is it a homogenous material? this Or a mix of materials? This exclamation was origianlly in swedish, and is tricky to translate. Another translation might have been "It did not end there". That might cure the FA that is beginning to form. For those who understand swedish, the original shout of horror was this: "Den tog inte slut, den gick bara av!" |

Is something damaged before she tries to fix it? Or is all damage caused by her trying to fix it? The thing she thought was something it wasn't, was it: the part that broke off? The part it broke off from? Was it the muffler? Did she think the problem was in a different part than it was? Is fixing the problem required to be able to drive the car? to drive it safely? To drive it without making lots of noise? I admit my car knowledge is quite limited as well. Oh, and fastener=fäste, fästanordning |

Is this summary correct? Something is damaged on a car's exhaus system, making it very noisy and potentially unsafe to drive. She tries to fix it by reaching under the rear of the car, but instead she manages to break off something, making the problem worse. If she had known what the real problem was, she would not have tried to fix it in the first place. |

Would you be able to reach the broken object inside the car? I didn't have to reach inside the car, but the part that was broken, and the thing that broke off wouldn't normally be seen from outside of the car Did the part break inside the car? something was broken inside the exhaust system Outside? But I could also (unexpectedly) see it from outside the car, and I had no clue what I was looking at, and jumped to a false conclution. The thing that I broke off, broke off outside of the car. |

So you thought a bird was stuck in your exhaust pipe? But it was actually part of the exhaust system? And you tore it off the car? |

So you thought a bird was stuck in your exhaust pipe? But it was actually part of the exhaust system? And you tore it off the car? You got it. And here is the confession: * * * SPOILER * * * I was borrowing my mother's car and something broke inside the car's muffler. Some kind of padding or isolating material was sticking out of the exhaust pipe. When I spotted this on the parking lot, I was certain that a bird somehow had got stuck inside the pipe. The material looked exactly like the tailfeathers of a bird! I was really creeped out, but had no other choice but to they to pull it out, since I figured I couldn't drive a car with something blocking the exhaust pipe. As I pulled on the thing, I found that it was "stuck" really hard and it only came out very slowly, until it broke off! I thought I had just ripped a bird in half, and hence my scream of horror. That was also when I realized it wasn't a bird at all, but some part of the car that really shouldn't be coming out of the exhaust pipe. That's when I phoned my dad for help. =) |

Great story! A similar thing happened to my dad, only it really was a bird, he didn't rip it in half, and its feet were sticking out of the radiator grille. Needless to say, it was NOT a pleasant sight. Can't wait to see your next puzzle! |
