Sitting at my computer, I suddenly shout out two words.

Probably a quickie.

Do you swear? Do you react to something? Something on your computer? On the screen? Or from the speakers? Is the puzzle title relevant? Do you shout the words at someone? At your computer? Do you mean for anyone to hear you? If so, is that person within earshot? Or are you speaking to someone through the computer? Or on the phone?

Do you hear: words? Music? Noise? Are you startled? Amused? Annoyed? Did you want to hear it? Expect to hear it? Is it unusually quiet? Or loud? Is it the sound of vuvuzelas? Of someone screaming?

On a tangent, I thought the vuvuzelas were a giant swarm of hornets for the first two FULL World Cup matches I watched. And a shout-out to the U.S. team for their awesome win today - !!!

So is this a callback for whatever song you're listening to? Not sure what you mean by "callback"...

Now figure out the song and/or words and you're all set. Told you this would go quickly.

A callback is basically what It_So_Happened said. The singer sings something, and the audience shouts something back. Song genre: Pop? Really recent pop that's still playing on the radio every hour? Rock? Alternative? Punk? Country? Easy Listening? 00s? 90s? 80s? 70s? 60s? earlier?

Oh joy an REM puzzle .

Is the song title two words? Is it Orange Crush?
Is there more to be found out about the song other than it's title that makes you sing along or shout along for that matter? Do you have a mondegreen about an REM song? Is the song actually an 80's song? or did you just mean that REM were formed in the 80s?

Oh joy an REM puzzle . Figured you'd like this one.

Is the song title two words? No Is it Orange Crush? No
Is there more to be found out about the song other than it's title that makes you sing along or shout along for that matter? Well, if you get the song, you'll definitely know the two words. Do you have a mondegreen about an REM song? I probably do, and probably for this song, but not these two words. Is the song actually an 80's song? Yes or did you just mean that REM were formed in the 80s?

Check that: I DEFINITELY have a mondegreen about this song's lyrics. Several, in fact. However, this puzzle does not involve a mondegreen.

I'm loathe to start firing out random Rem songs.

But I think I may have this:

Drum roll........

Do you shout Leonard Bernstein?

I'm loathe to start firing out random Rem songs.

But I think I may have this:

Drum roll........ BADABADABADABADABADABADABADABA...

Do you shout Leonard Bernstein? Yes, I do!

**********SPOILER**********

And for those of you who don't know, the song is "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". I will shout "LEONARD BERNSTEIN" whenever I hear this song, even in a public place (which I have done).

Referring to the mondegreens, let me put it this way: I went to look up the lyrics so I could actually get the right ones. I wen to three different sites. I got three different versions.

Nice job to It_so_happened for the first big push, and Peter365 for the solve.

Great Puzzle Balin. I'm a huge REM fan and have seen them live 11 times. I've been into them since Murmur. It's almost impossible to listen to "It's the end of the world..." without shouting Leonard Bernstein so you're not alone there.
My second ever puzzle on this forum was an REM themed one. It's in the March 2007 solved puzzles folder and is entitled Really Easy Money. The recently returned Beccaann solved it and well she should have as she comes froms Athens Georgia.

Oh well back to my rhyming puzzle.

I went and found that puzzle in the archives after you said that, and realized I hadn't listened to The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite before. It is now on my iPod - I have the Automatic for the People CD. (Unfortunately, I have no other REM ones. That hopefully will change soon.)

I have everything they ever recorded. Their first 3 albums Murmur, Reckoning & Fables of the Reconstruction are absolute gems although Michael's inaudible lyrics may frustrate you. I challenge you to listen to a song called "Wendell Gee" on the fables album and not fall in love with it.

A radio station in the Cleveland (Ohio) area once played that song repeatedly for an entire 24 hours when they changed formats. And people actually listened to it for hours on end. Must have been in the late 90s, I think. I can't remember the name of the station, though.

Fun puzzle. Yay REM!

According to Wikipedia, the station was WENZ 107.9, and they played the 24-hour loop twice: once in 1992 when switching to an alternative rock format, then again in 1999 when switching from that format.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've only heard the song on the radio about twice, and I listen to rock stations. Yet it's the most-played REM song on my iPod.

Sorry but seven hours is way too long to be a record. In the early years, around the turn of the century, one puzzle was solved by two of us in two postings. Something to do with a king and pain. Knowing that we haven't had a king for many years I thought that the king was probably French, and pain was bread. So the woman crying 'pain' and then dying was asking for bread.

Oh, and for the oldies among us, how many of us sang along 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' and then didn't really know the rest of the words, but our hands were in the air with fingers pointing.
