Today at work, I completed a task. Any master of the skill I used to complete this task would recognize the fault in what I did. My boss is a master of this skill. However, my boss was very satisfied, and in fact, she would have done it the same way herself.

Does the fact that your boss is a women have any significance? Are you Male? or Female? Does your sex (M of F) have any relevance? Was this a task normally done by a Male? By Female? Was the task completed with a "fault" because of some problem? Was the "fault" a way to correct a problem that prevented you from performing the task in a normal manner?

Also, it is not exactly liquid, or pourable. There is no cartridge; the ink is taken from the container and applied directly to the press

(Hope that makes sense; I don't know much about printing presses.)i think most people will have this problem...you dont really need to know EXACTLY how the press works, just what TYPE of printing press it is. Example of type of printing press: Offset press...which it is NOT. Googling is acceptable

Did you spread the ink unevenly? Did it result in uneven printing? Were (parts of) the print: too heavily inked? Too lightly inked? Not inked at all? Is the print supposed to look like that? Did prints from before the technology was perfected look like that? Is the point to imitate the artifacts from an older and/or inferior printing technique? Or is it just supposed to look artistic?

So I think this is a list of the things that are "part of it":

-The invites look nicer/fancier.
-They sell better.
-One can feel the print.

This all good?

Is transmission of the invitations relevant? (i.e. faxing)

Am I overcomplicating things again?

Yeah...I'm gonna just go to bed now, and knowing my luck, someone'll step in and solve this one while I'm asleep. But my brain's frying anyway, so just one more set of questions....

Did you emboss all the invitations this way? Or just one? Does it make the invitations more ornate? Unique? Intricate?

Is every piece of stationery embossed in the exact same way? Do consumers prefer the embossed stationery?

I feel like the penguin travelling southwest to the South Pole: always circling closer and closer, but never actually reaching it.

Is every piece of stationery embossed in the exact same way?not all, but a large portion Do consumers prefer the embossed stationery? typically yes

I feel like the penguin travelling southwest to the South Pole: always circling closer and closer, but never actually reaching it. I feel like after all this work the answer is going to be a let down. There's 2 words you could say that haven't been said that would wrap this sucker up.

Let's see.........

Does the embossing make the invitations look prettier? (I think we've established that it's close to "fancy" and "unique," but those weren't exactly it, so....)

BIG HINT: This puzzle would be completely impossible 100 years ago, and very unlikely before the 1990s.

Does the embossing make the invites/other stationery look more hand-made than machine-made? Are embossed invites rarer/less likely to be found than non-embossed?

Does the embossing make the invites/other stationery look more hand-made than machine-made?PRECISELY! Are embossed invites rarer/less likely to be found than non-embossed?

I work at a letterpress shop.
Letterpress has been around since Gutenburg, and until the 20th century was the main type of commercial printing. Offset printing and eventually (and even more importantly) digital printing, changed this. Letterpress is an old craft now, the few presses still manufactured are fully automated, plates are made from polymer instead of old movable type...

But there is a recent resurgence of craft letterpress. People like to get letterpress printed invitations, business cards, stationery, etc, because they are not mass produced, flat, generic stuff that they could make using a home computer and printer. It's the handmade quality that you get from letterpress that people want.

Unfortunately now-a-days, people associate letterpress with deeply impressed/embossed type and image. If you ask any old master, he will tell you that for centuries it was considered a sign of bad printing to have more than a very minimal impression in the paper. Letterpresses and letterpress inks are made to just kiss the paper enough to transfer an ink layer... and using too much pressure can damage the old movable lead type. If you try to give most customers a letterpress job without a deep impression though, the general reaction is that this defeats the purpose of paying the extra money for the hand-made, fine-art quality, and that they might as well go to an offset printer. A shame, but the general trend now is that letterpress=embossing. (I'll admit, it does look nice, and new fancy photo-polymer plates mean you don't have to damage that valuable lead type to do it)

Not to advertise or anything, but if you want to check out the kind of stuff I'm printing, check out Kathryn (my friend and boss, the one-woman show at the small shop) 's website: www.blackbirdletterpress.com
