Is it fear of a specific few people/person, A specific few... or all people with a certain quality? ... but they all do have a certain quality. Is the object only nominally valuable? It's not necessarily intrinsically valuable, but there are several reasons people might want it. or does it contain rare materials? Possibly, but unlikely. |

Is a ladder involved? Not necessarily. Is so, only mildly. A long one? No. They=HAM? Yes. Number fo them relevant? No. They=their? Yes. Was the fear rational? Yes. Did they fear: Injury? Death? Ridicule? None of these, really, though the latter two may factor into it. Did the people they feared want them to not get the object? Not necessarily. Do they own it? No. Or defend it? No. Are they competing for it? The people who want it? Yes. |

Is this recap correct: A skilled fiddle player is held by group 2, awaiting execution for highway robbery. He has his fiddle with him and is playing it while awaiting death. Group 1 want to get their hands on his valuable fiddle, but because they're afraid of group 2 they fail to do so. Before being executed, the fiddler smashes his fiddle on a rock. Does the fiddler want group 1 to get the fiddle? Does he want to prevent group 2 from getting it? Does he want to prevent anyone from getting it? Did he make the fiddle? Relevant? Does the fiddler want the relative to have it? Irr. Throughout the entire story? Or just at the start? Is there a purpose to the fiddling, other than to pass the time? Oh, yes. I should mention that while the relatives eventually got the wrecked instrument (he was Scottish, and it's in his clan museum), how they came to have it is unknown and irrelevant, as they weren't there at the time. Hint: Ask the above questions again, but this time referring to Group 1. |

Lemme try a recap... First, the earlier one: "A skilled fiddle player is held by Group 2, awaiting execution for highway robbery. He has his fiddle with him and is playing it while awaiting death. Group 1 want to get their hands on his valuable fiddle, but because they're afraid of Group 2 they fail to do so. Before being executed, the fiddler smashes his fiddle on a rock." This has been established to be completely correct. The following information has been also confirmed: -The fiddler planned to give the fiddle to Group 1 before his death. -He also knew of Group 1's plan to get the fiddle. -Group 1 had the opportunity to reach the fiddler, but chose not to. -One reason for this was fear of the guards, and the other was the fear of being arrested by Group 2 for playing the fiddle. This correct? What's left to find out? You earlier said the specific songs fiddled were relevant...is it just one song? More than one? Is the song sung to as well as fiddled? Is it a satire? |

Hm, Reason 1 seems covered already by Reason 2. This correct? Yes. What's left to find out? -Why'd the highwayman want someone to have the fiddle? -Why'd he destroy it? You earlier said the specific songs fiddled were relevant...is it just one song? Yes. More than one? Is the song sung to as well as fiddled? Yes. Is it a satire? No. |

Did he destroy it so no one else could have it? Because it was meant specifically for this group? Was it meant as a gift? For the whole group? Part of it? One person? Is the song a folk song? Did he teach the song to the person/persons he was going to give the fiddle to? |

So, to summarize: The fiddler is being held captive by Group 2 for highway robbery, and is awaiting execution. While imprisoned, he plays the fiddle. Meanwhile, Group 1 is planning to get the fiddle from the fiddler. The fiddler is planning to give the fiddle to one of the members of Group 1, and he knows of their plan to get it. However, before reaching the fiddler, Group 1 turns back because they are afraid that if they play the fiddle, Group 2 will arrest them. They still want the fiddle, but are too afraid to try to get it. The fiddler realizes that Group 1 has left (perhaps he even sees this), and, feeling that they are no longer worthy of having the fiddle, he smashes his fiddle on a rock before he is executed. After he dies, his relatives come and retrieve the destroyed fiddle. Naturally, this story is set to a catchy folk tune. Is this good? What's left to find? |

Close enough, I guess. *************** Singing Spoiler *************** Jamie MacPherson was executed in 1701. He was a well-known fiddler and owned a very fine and valuable instrument. On the gallows he played a tune now known as MacPherson's Rant, or MacPherson's Lament. Verses were added by Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns, but the original composition is thought to be his own. The story goes that he played the fiddle on the gallows, then offered it freely to anyone who would play on it for him as he died. Afraid of official repression, no one stepped forward. So cursing them all for cowards, he destroyed the fiddle (Its reputed remains are now in the Clan MacPherson museum). Two of the verses: "'There's some come here to see me hung, And some to buy my fiddle, But before that I do part with her, I'll break her through the middle.' He took his fiddle in both of his hands, And broke it over a stone, Cried, 'There's no other hand shall play on thee, When I am dead and gone.'" It's a very good example of a "defiance from the gallows" song: "Oh, what is death, but parting breath? On many's the bloody plain, I've dared his face, and in this place, I'll scorn him yet again." |
