Hi there!

This is my very first post. I've gotten to know the concept of lateral puzzles a few weeks ago and browsed through the greater part of the solved puzzles on this forum but I've never created or taken part in one myself so far, so I hope I'm getting this right. Sorry for my English in advance since I'm not a native speaker.

Anyway, here it is, I guess this is a quick one:

My newest acquisation will hopefully help me to deal better with an annoying habit of mine.

Did you buy gloves to stop you biting your nails?
Did you buy a hat to stop yourself pulling your hair out?
:-)

Was your acquisition a purchase? A find? A gift?

Was it natural or artificial?

Is the habit a common one? Does it annoy you? Others? Does it involve a part of your body? An action?

Welcome to the board, BTW.

Do you typically do this habit in public? Would the habit be considered dangerous?

Wild guess: do you clean your teeth with a knife? And you bought toothpicks?

If that's not it, is the habit intended to accomplish something? And the item is needed to do whatever it is? And the item purchased replaces the bad-habit item?

Do you typically do this habit in public? Not at all Would the habit be considered dangerous? Potentially

Wild guess: do you clean your teeth with a knife? And you bought toothpicks? No to these

If that's not it, is the habit intended to accomplish something? I do intend to accomplish something and this makes me practice the habit, but it's not like I practice the habit in order to accomplish it And the item is needed to do whatever it is? Yes (but not the one I bought) And the item purchased replaces the bad-habit item? No

Hint: There are several items: the one I bought, the one I need to accomplish something and a bad-habit... something.

I think this is good enough for a

************* SPOILER *************

Attempting to eat more healthy (and due to a lack of a freezer to store pizza) I've been trying to cook more often for a couple of months. Still, the college student who mainly lives on junk food is still VERY strong in me and thus my cooking is usually rather simple. In fact, waiting for the pasta or rice or whatever to be cooked often takes longer than everything else combined which I find pretty annoying.

During the last few of months, I've developed the habit of simply leaving the stove while my food is boiling (leaving the stove on on a lower level to avoid overboil or something) to "quickly check my mails" (it can also involve watching TV or reading something or whatever, but most of the time I do stuff on my computer). The reason why this behavior of mine doesn't annoy anyone is simply that I live alone, so no-one sees it when I'm doing that. If they would, they'd probably be pretty reproachful since, granted, it is something that can be dangerous - in fact the other person I know who has the same habit has once managed to cause a (fortunately just small) fire that way. But since my living room is right next to my kitchen and I have quite a sensitive smoke alarm, I daresay that the probability of this to happen to me is quite low.

What has already happened to me, however, is that I totally lost track of time and managed to burn my food, so that part of my food ended up inedible and I also had to scrub away the food that has nastily burnt to the bottom of my pot. When that happened to me the last time last week, I got so fed up with it that I bought an egg timer so set to a reasonable time so that I'm reminded of my food in time before something like that can happen again. Now I just have to remember to actually use the timer...

Thanks, Balin, for being so persistent with that. I suppose the different items could've been a little confusing (bought item: the egg timer; item to accomplish something: my stove needed for cooking; the bad-habit something: generally doing stuff outside the kitchen, or, as an item, usually my laptop).

Thanks :-) If you're just half as bad as I am, I'd suggest give it a try. It might be a little silly but it still beats having to deal with the nasty burnt-on could-have-been-food in the pots.

I have the same habit--It bores me to death to watch food cooking. I usually hear the pasta boiling over/rice drying out before it gets too bad. But sometimes it does get a little dry or overcooked. And I do live alone as well, so nobody is annoyed.
