Well, it's been a while, so I figured the easiest way to jump back into the proceedings is with a new puzzle! A psychiatrist was noticing that one of her patients, who was generally a calm and even person, would occasionally break out into bouts of anger and even rage. She spent weeks trying to find the underlying cause of this aggression. Finally, she went to the store, spent around five dollars, and the problem was greatly alleviated. What did she buy, and why did it help? | ||

Did the rage have a logical cause, in the sense that the patient was understandably enraged at something in his or her life? or did it have a biological cause, such as a reaction to a drug or a physical sensation? | ||

Can we call the psychiatrist Dr. Philippa? If the patient is HAM can we call him Lukisho? And if he is HAF can we call her Shanaynay? Did Dr. Phillippa intend to alleviate the problem? By greatly alleviating the problem did she: stop the bursts of rage alltogether? Reduce their frequency? Reduce their intensity? Kill the patient? Render him physically incapable of exhibiting bursts of rage? During the rage bursts, did Lukisho/Shanaynay: Scream? Kick? Hit? Use other physical violence? Bite? Exhibit regressive behavior such as soiling him/herself? Curse? Swear? Self-mutilate? Did he exhibit these behaviors towards Dr. Phillippa? Towards any other relevant person? Any relevant thing? Was that person/thing present? Was it a family member of Shanaynay/Lukisho? A friend of him/her/it? A pet? An animal? | ||

Not really sure. once a two weeks? once a month? The "thing" that caused the rage was: part of the therapy? no applied by patient alone to herself? no irrelevant both of patient and psychiatrist? not sure what this means. One correction: the doctor is really more of a counseling psychologist than a psychiatrist. I wasn't aware of the difference. They were in her office. Relevant? Not particularly. I'd say that's pretty well enough for a... ********SPOILER********** In this true story, my friend (the psychologist) eventually discovered that the client suffered from a rare condition called misophonia, which is an extreme irritation to very specific and usually ordinary sounds. In this case, my friend used pens with a click-top, and had the habit of clicking them a few times in between writing notes. The client was very bothered by these sounds, but her irritation with it was somewhat subconscious. She would just become angry after hearing the clicking sound (which is exacerbated by general stress). So my friend chose to use a different kind of pen, and the bouts of anger were much reduced, although there were still other sounds that irritated her, such as when certain diesel trucks would drive by the office. As they treated her condition, she became much more capable of dealing with the other issues she was having. You know, ISH, I have seizures, and one of my seizure triggers is stress. I know a seizure trigger for some people is certain sounds...I have a friend whose parents had to disable their doorbell when their kids were still living at home, because my friend's older sister has sound-triggered seizures. Every time any kind of bell rang, doorbell or whatever, she'd begin convulsing. :-( |
