Well, it's been a while, so I figured the easiest way to jump back into the proceedings is with a new puzzle! A psychiatrist was noticing that one of her patients, who was generally a calm and even person, would occasionally break out into bouts of anger and even rage. She spent weeks trying to find the underlying cause of this aggression. Finally, she went to the store, spent around five dollars, and the problem was greatly alleviated. What did she buy, and why did it help? |

Was the patient HAM? Was the rage directed at anything? or anyone in particular? or just randomly at the world? Did the rage have a logical cause, in the sense that the patient was understandably enraged at something in his or her life? or did it have a biological cause, such as a reaction to a drug or a physical sensation? |

Welcome back, ISH!! Glad to see you around again! Did the psychiatrist buy something common? Something found in most stores? A food item? Drink? Clothing? Is it relevant what type of store it was? Was it a grocery store? Bookstore? Hardware store? Convenience store? General store? Sporting goods store? Did she kill the patient? |

Glasses? Poison? Food? Medication? A book? On how to control your rage? Or was it one of those stress squeezey thingies that you squeeze when you're mad so you don't go into a fit of rage. Can we call the psychiatrist Dr. Philippa? If the patient is HAM can we call him Lukisho? And if he is HAF can we call her Shanaynay? Did Dr. Phillippa intend to alleviate the problem? By greatly alleviating the problem did she: stop the bursts of rage alltogether? Reduce their frequency? Reduce their intensity? Kill the patient? Render him physically incapable of exhibiting bursts of rage? During the rage bursts, did Lukisho/Shanaynay: Scream? Kick? Hit? Use other physical violence? Bite? Exhibit regressive behavior such as soiling him/herself? Curse? Swear? Self-mutilate? Did he exhibit these behaviors towards Dr. Phillippa? Towards any other relevant person? Any relevant thing? Was that person/thing present? Was it a family member of Shanaynay/Lukisho? A friend of him/her/it? A pet? An animal? |

Was the patient HAM? HAF, actually, but gender is irrelevant Was the rage directed at anything? or anyone in particular? or just randomly at the world? a mixture of these at different times Did the rage have a logical cause, in the sense that the patient was understandably enraged at something in his or her life? no or did it have a biological cause, such as a reaction to a drug or a physical sensation? yes Welcome back, ISH!! Glad to see you around again! Thanks! Did the psychiatrist buy something common? Yes Something found in most stores? Well, I don't know about most, but definitely a lot A food item? Drink? Clothing? No to all Is it relevant what type of store it was? NoWas it a grocery store? Could be Bookstore? Probably not, but maybe Hardware store? Probably not Convenience store? Could be General store? Could be Sporting goods store? Probably not Did she kill the patient? Ha, no. Glasses? Poison? Food? Medication? A book? On how to control your rage? Or was it one of those stress squeezey thingies that you squeeze when you're mad so you don't go into a fit of rage. None of these Can we call the psychiatrist Dr. Philippa? No. Just kidding, sure If the patient is HAM can we call him Lukisho? And if he is HAF can we call her Shanaynay? Ha, if you wish. Did Dr. Phillippa intend to alleviate the problem? Yes By greatly alleviating the problem did she: stop the bursts of rage alltogether? Reduce their frequency? This Reduce their intensity? Kill the patient? Render him physically incapable of exhibiting bursts of rage? No to rest During the rage bursts, did Lukisho/Shanaynay: Scream? This, mostly Kick? Hit? Use other physical violence? Bite? Could be some of these, but wasn't excessively violent Exhibit regressive behavior such as soiling him/herself? Probably not Curse? Swear? Could be these Self-mutilate? Probably not Did he exhibit these behaviors towards Dr. Phillippa? While in conversation with her, anyway Towards any other relevant person? Any relevant thing? Was that person/thing present? Was it a family member of Shanaynay/Lukisho? A friend of him/her/it? A pet? An animal? Not directed at anything in particular |

Was the cause of the patient's rage relevant to a habit of hers? Something she did often? Did she have regular contact with this drug? Nicotine? Alcohol? |

Did the patient's rage happen in more or less regular intervals? If so: once a week? once a two weeks? once a month? The "thing" that caused the rage was: part of the therapy? applied by patient alone to herself? irrelevant both of patient and psychiatrist? The item bought was: a toy? a stationery? a cosmetic? The item bought was commonly used: in household? at school? in the office? in outdoor works/activities? |

Not really sure. once a two weeks? once a month? The "thing" that caused the rage was: part of the therapy? no applied by patient alone to herself? no irrelevant both of patient and psychiatrist? not sure what this means. Please rephrase The item bought was: a toy? a stationery? this a cosmetic? The item bought was commonly used: in household? at school? in the office? all of these three in outdoor works/activities? maybe sometimes Did she give the item she bought to the patient? no! |

Did the psychiatrist need the pen as a whole? or only a part of it? Did she use it as people normally use pens? or other way? The cause of rage: was it dependent on psychiatrist? was it dependent on patient? Was someone else involved? Does the regularity of rage attacks have something to do with an event/incident that happens with same regularity? |

Did she draw something? no Did she use any other items than the pen? perhaps, but FA Is the pure act of writing what caused the improvement? no Was the patient at home or in hospital? One correction: the doctor is really more of a counseling psychologist than a psychiatrist. I wasn't aware of the difference. They were in her office. Relevant? Not particularly. Would any other writing instrument than a pen also work? Many others would, yes Any physical feature of the pen relevant? Not of the ones she bought... If so: size? colour? design? This is relevant |

Is there any other pen involved? well, yes-ish, see below Did the rage attacks happened during therapy/consultances in doctor's office? yes Was the rage caused by the doctor's own pen, which her patient actually couldn't stand for some reason? YES! And changing a pen simply solved the problem? exactly! FA = that she used the pen? Did she not use the pen? Did she give it as a gift to the patient? no, the FA was in regards to the thought that the use of the new pen was the calming factor, as opposed to the non-use of her other one. |

Did the pen resemble something else? no Was the patient irritated by the sounds that the pen made? yes! Like clicking? yes! Or scratching? I'd say that's pretty well enough for a... ********SPOILER********** In this true story, my friend (the psychologist) eventually discovered that the client suffered from a rare condition called misophonia, which is an extreme irritation to very specific and usually ordinary sounds. In this case, my friend used pens with a click-top, and had the habit of clicking them a few times in between writing notes. The client was very bothered by these sounds, but her irritation with it was somewhat subconscious. She would just become angry after hearing the clicking sound (which is exacerbated by general stress). So my friend chose to use a different kind of pen, and the bouts of anger were much reduced, although there were still other sounds that irritated her, such as when certain diesel trucks would drive by the office. As they treated her condition, she became much more capable of dealing with the other issues she was having. See the wikipedia article on misophonia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia Thanks to Redwine and Balin for the legwork, Kaygee for the final detail, and everyone else who participated! |

You know, ISH, I have seizures, and one of my seizure triggers is stress. I know a seizure trigger for some people is certain sounds...I have a friend whose parents had to disable their doorbell when their kids were still living at home, because my friend's older sister has sound-triggered seizures. Every time any kind of bell rang, doorbell or whatever, she'd begin convulsing. :-( |
