Does "there" refers to a particular town/country/continent or is more like a physical feature like "mountain" or "sea"? If the latter is true, could you get "it" for free in a similar location elsewhere? If you are not "there" can you get "it" (and pay a price) in a store? Order it on the Internet? Have someone deliver "it" at your home? |

Just to make sure we are on the right track: The 'there' is in the city, but it is not a building, a street, a square, a stadium or a park. Correct? If this is correct, is 'there' situated in one of the above ? (a certain part of a building, street, square, stadium, park) The second condition is related to the person receiving the card? Do they need to go anywhere? Stay home? Fill out a form? Listen for something? No to all, once again noish for the latter, but may mislead, so assume no On a radio station in my state, they do a contest where they play a certain song, and the 10th caller once that song is played wins a prize. Is it anything like that? No, nothing like that, except the principle of the two conditions: in your example, the radio has to play the song and you have to be the 10th caller, here you have to be there and... something else Just to make sure we are on the right track: Good idea :-) The 'there' is in the city, but it is not a building, a street, a square, a stadium or a park. Correct? All correct If this is correct, is 'there' situated in one of the above ? (a certain part of a building, street, square, stadium, park) No, in any of them The second condition is related to the person receiving the card? To some other persons? This! Good point! Are they (the cards) in limited number? Probably yes, but irrel. |

Are there people in the subway giving you advertisement flyers about the restaurant with which you can get a free meal? The persons you have to interact with are: at the entrance? Immediately after entrance? On the platform? In the wagons? |

Do the people whom you interact (talk) with the same as the people giving the cards / flyers? Do they talk to you first or you should talk first? Is the interaction triggered by doing something specific (sitting, standing, eating, talking on the phone, other thing)? |

Sorry, my mistake, indeed I meant "are" they the same The action you do -- involves some other people (like standing up and giving your seat to elderly people) or is something that involves only you? The action is something that you would normally expect in a subway or something more bizarre (like sitting on the floor, for example)? |

Is the seat marked in some way? Are more than one seat available in a particular train? A particular car? Do you know that by sitting there you are eligible for receiving the flyer? Can you seat there and receive nothing? If you don't respond to them when approached you cannot receive the flyer? Are they asking something to which you should respond correctly in order to win? |

Maybe, but irrel. to both Do you know that by sitting there you are eligible for receiving the flyer? Yesish Can you seat there and receive nothing? Yes you can If you don't respond to them when approached you cannot receive the flyer? True, but not likely to happen... Are they asking something to which you should respond correctly in order to win? Not really, no |

Incidentally, is this a true story about the London Underground? (In which case, the odds of getting a vacant seat are about the same as walking on the moon, and I'd expect a free pizza at the very least :-)) If I (or an average London commuter) saw the marking, would I instantly know that there was some sort of promotion going on? Would I be likely to mistake it for something else? Or would I only look for the marking after speaking to the promotions people on the Tube? Do the people on the Tube give me the papery ticket-like thing when I spot the marking? And then I go to the restaurant and swap said papery thing for a meal? Does the marking have a distinctive shape? Like the Golden Arches or such? Are scratchcards relevant at all? |

Is something written on the seat? Scratched into it? Stuck to it? Under it? No to all, but keep searching this way Is it some sort of geocache? Thanks for teaching me a new word, but no, no geocaching relevant :-) Incidentally, is this a true story about the London Underground? Yes! (In which case, the odds of getting a vacant seat are about the same as walking on the moon, and I'd expect a free pizza at the very least :-)) It's a true story that happened to me, and I DID get a vacant seat, but I entered the coach in Heatrow, starting point of the line, that was easy ;-) If I (or an average London commuter) saw the marking, would I instantly know that there was some sort of promotion going on? Probably yes, but so would every person on earth, no advantages in being londoner Would I be likely to mistake it for something else? I don't think so Or would I only look for the marking after speaking to the promotions people on the Tube? No Do the people on the Tube give me the papery ticket-like thing when I spot the marking? Noish... but OTRT And then I go to the restaurant and swap said papery thing for a meal? This part is correct Does the marking have a distinctive shape? No with a tiny tiny ish Like the Golden Arches or such? Are scratchcards relevant at all? No to these |

You got on at Heathrow, and sat down, right? Did you see the marking before sitting down? After sitting down? Did you sit on the marking? Was the marking worked somehow into the fabric of the seat? The relevant people on the tube were in the same carriage, right? Did they mention the promotion before you saw the marking? Or after? Are the straps above the seats relevant? What about the billboards with advertising: are they relevant? Did these people approach you and tell you about the promotion? Is there any promotional material printed on the ticket itself? Rather like those car parks? (I don't recall this, but in the Boris era, one never knows.) Are Oyster cards relevant at all? |

So there's a particular advertisement on the Tube, and whoever sits in the seat directly under it gets approached by the mystery people who dispense a free meal? Is that close? Is the advertisement actually the 'marking'? Would you know, if you had looked up at the billboard, that you would get a free meal by sitting under it? Or does it have some sort of cryptic message? Are the people who dispense the free meal voucher dressed distinctively? Did you have to answer a question to get the free meal? |

So there's a particular advertisement on the Tube, and whoever sits in the seat directly under it gets approached by the mystery people who dispense a free meal? Is that close? More than close, it's actually everything that needed to be solved in the puzzle :-) Is the advertisement actually the 'marking'? Yes it is Would you know, if you had looked up at the billboard, that you would get a free meal by sitting under it? Yesish Or does it have some sort of cryptic message? It's not obvious, but gives hints Are the people who dispense the free meal voucher dressed distinctively? Not really, but irrel. Did you have to answer a question to get the free meal? No I guess we're close enough to declare a SPOILER: I was in London last week, just landed in Heatrow, got into the tube to reach my hotel and sat on a seat which was just under a particular billboard. This billboard advertised a restaurant chain, with the advertising text saying approximately "Introduce this person to our delicious food", and an arrow indicating the seat. I didn't notice the ad, sat there by pure chance, and then suddenly two guys, probably paid by the restaurant chain for promotion, approached me and told me that, just by sitting there, I was entitled to win a vaucher for 2 free meals in one of their restaurants. This inspired me the puzzle "just be there (on that particular seat) and you'll get it (the meal) for free :-) Thanks everybody for participating, Galfisk, Rbruma and Balin for the big investigation work and Woodworm for the final solving! Will probably post a new puzzle this afternoon... |
