Mr and Mrs Yorke are sitting in their living room, relaxing. Suddenly Mr Yorke says "Oh, Mrs Greenwood is back home". Mrs Greenwood is their neighbour. How did Mr Yorke guess that? |

None Theory: Mr. Greenwood wants to impress his wife with the new piece he learned, so he plays it when she comes home. Mr. Yorke knows because Mr. Greenwood told him. Is there an element of sarcasm in what Mr Greenwood plays e.g. does he play something like "Hail to the Chief" on her arrival? Is Mr Greenwood a particularly good piano player? relevant? One other theory-- Mr Greenwood has arthritis and part of his therapy is to excercise his fingers by playing piano. He hates doing this but his wife insists so when she arrives home he immediately starts to play to convince her he's been exercising while she was out? Bit farfetched I know. |

Is there an element of sarcasm in what Mr Greenwood plays e.g. does he play something like "Hail to the Chief" on her arrival? Ha ha no, none of this :-) Is Mr Greenwood a particularly good piano player? Assume yes relevant? Indirectly yes One other theory-- Mr Greenwood has arthritis and part of his therapy is to excercise his fingers by playing piano. He hates doing this but his wife insists so when she arrives home he immediately starts to play to convince her he's been exercising while she was out? Bit farfetched I know. Again, nice long-shot, but no. I'm gonna tell you, the answer is indeed a quite lateral difficult-to-spot one, so my advice is to approach it methodically, step by step |

You said that he (Mr. Greenwood) does not do this ordinarily when his wife comes home. If so, did something happen before that elicited his reaction? If so, it involved him? Mr. Yorke? His wife? Even if he does not do this ordinarily, he does it from time to time? Anniversary relevant? Did he play the same tune before? Ok step by step it is. Does Mrs Greenwood like the piece that he plays? irrel. Is it classical? This, very probably jazz? pop? rock? other? Could be jazz, but assume it's classical, no to rest Are Mr & Mrs Greenwood's ages relvant? No Is Mr Yorke aware that the piano playing means Mrs Greenwood has arrived home because Mr Greenwood told him about it? Mrs Greenwood? Mrs Yorke? No to all Or does he just come to suspect this over time? Yesish, but there may be a FA lurking here... You said that he (Mr. Greenwood) does not do this ordinarily when his wife comes home. No, I said that he does not play the piano only if his wife is home If so, did something happen before that elicited his reaction? If so, it involved him? Mr. Yorke? His wife? No, nothing special happened Even if he does not do this ordinarily, he does it from time to time? He actually plays piano ordinarily, sorry for misunderstanding Anniversary relevant? No Did he play the same tune before? Probably yes, irrel. Just to get it out of my head -- are all three persons alive or some ghost story is involved? No, everyone alive, and the story is quite ordinary Is anyone else relevant besides the three we know? No Just another thought- Is Mrs Greenwood's name relevant? Does he play a song that mentions her name in the title? No :-) Now that you found that a piano is involved I can say it, it's just a wink to Radiohead musicians Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, who both play the piano, but the relevance of their names stops here. |

Just a short recap: Mr. Yorke is in his living room. At some point he hears his neighbour, Mr. Greenwood, starting to play the piano and somehow concludes that Mrs. Greenwood just came home. Mr. Greenwood often plays the piano, with or without his wife inside. Correct? Has Mr. Yorke, in this particular situation, has any other information that enables him to deduce that Mrs. Greenwood came home? Did he know she was out? Is something that Mrs. Greenwood does when coming home or when being there that somewhat alters the sound of the piano? Like shutting a door, closing the windows so the sound is not heard so clear any more? Is my assumption from the recap correct: Mr. Greenwood starts to play when she comes home, or is it in the process of playing and simply something changes in the quality of the sound? |

Just a short recap: Always wise Mr. Yorke is in his living room. At some point he hears his neighbour, Mr. Greenwood, starting to play the piano and somehow concludes that Mrs. Greenwood just came home. Not literally true. He concludes that while he plays the piano, not when he starts to. Mr. Greenwood often plays the piano, with or without his wife inside. Correct? Correct Has Mr. Yorke, in this particular situation, has any other information that enables him to deduce that Mrs. Greenwood came home? Yes. It's the main point of the puzzle, btw... Did he know she was out? Assume yes, irrel. Is something that Mrs. Greenwood does when coming home or when being there that somewhat alters the sound of the piano? Like shutting a door, closing the windows so the sound is not heard so clear any more? No to all Is my assumption from the recap correct: Mr. Greenwood starts to play when she comes home, Again, irrelevant when he starts to play or is it in the process of playing and simply something changes in the quality of the sound? Perhaps Mrs Greenwood's name is (say) Becca, and he plays out her theme in musical notes? Or something along those lines? None of this Is it a player piano? No And he switches to the rolls when she comes in? So no Is he playing "their" song? No Does he apply any relevant pedal when she comes home? No Do they play a duet? No but... Can we assume that Mr. Greenwood only plays this 1 piece of music on this day? No Or has he played other pieces prior to this one on this day? Yes Will he play other pieces after this one? Irrel. Does Mrs. Greenwood know how to play a piano? Probably yes If so, can she play it well? Probably Not very well? At a level below what Mr. Greenwood can do? Above his level? Irrel. Does Mrs. G begin to sing along with the piano music? Hum along? Tap out a rhythm on some object? Begin to dance? No to all |

When she enters the room, does he change his tempo? Dynamics? Key/pitch? Does he sing along? Does she do anything relevant when he plays? Does he play the wonderful Brahms transcription of Bach's Chaconne in D minor for left hand only? So that his right hand is free to fondle his spouse? |

Is the volume at which he plays relevant? Was Mrs. Greenwood just returning home? or has she been home for some time when Mr. York says she is back home? |

Does she dance? Mime? Is she his page turner? So it's clear she's there when there isn't an embarrassing pause between bars 23 and 24? Long shot: is it a prepared piano? |

Does she dance? Mime? Is she his page turner? YES! So it's clear she's there when there isn't an embarrassing pause between bars 23 and 24? Exactly so! Long shot: is it a prepared piano? Don't know what a prepared piano is, but anyway given the previous question it's time for ******************* SPOILER ****************** Mr. Yorke hears his neighbour, Mr. Greenwood, playing the piano. He recognizes the piece being played, and he knows it's a quite long and difficult one, so that in order to play it Mr. Greenwood needs someone turning the score pages at the right moment. Hence he deduces Mrs. Greenwood must be back home, otherwise his husband could not be playing that piece in the proper way. Thanks everybody for playing, and congrats to Woodworm who came with the right idea at the end! |
